Tony Soprano: Borderline (Disordered) Character, Incredible Actor

There is no doubt that James Gandolfini was an amazing actor (I loved him in everything from True Romance and Get Shorty to Where the Wild Things Are), but it was in playing Tony Soprano that he hit the peak of genius for me.  Tony could’ve been a simple mobster with some issues, but the writers and Mr Gandolfini made him a complex man and an icon of the TV anti-hero  And, whether he realized it or not, possibly the first male borderline in pop culture.

In order to show what I’m talking about I’ll go through the 9 key symptoms in Borderline Personality Disorder and show just how mobster Tony Soprano fits them.

Whumpee who’s not been in a hospital or medical setting before. When they wake up, already disoriented from the change in scenery and drugs, everything’s new and different. White walls, so clean and blank. Caretaker gently holding their hand, as one does, while Whumpee wakes up. Everything feels so cold and uncaring despite knowing that really, that’s what this is all for. “whattsthis?” They ask, voice slurred a little. They’re so floaty, the feeling strangely pleasant. But it doesn’t make them feel safe in this new place. “The IV, honey. It’s giving you medicine to help you recover.” Caretaker hums, watching whumpee’s dilated pupils flick to the tube and then back to Caretaker. “Not seen one in movies or anything before?” “Nah. It’s freaky. don’t like it.” They ask about everything— every monitor, medicine, precaution. Caretaker answers patiently each time.
