In which its very cold out and Jade wants a job

Jade was excited the minute she heard about Prospit. A cafe, with a greenhouse, and dogs?? yes??? It sounded like heaven on earth, and she couldn’t recall ever having been quite this excited about a public place. Which is why, after visiting once or twice and adoring it there, she had decided to apply. She knew they were looking to hire, and while Jade had never had a job before, mostly because her anxiety had kept her from even trying to apply, she was a lot more confident about this! It was probably because she felt a lot more relaxed around dogs, and if she could work around them, she would be golden. But as Jade began walking towards the coffeeshop, she noticed that what had started as a light powdering of snow was growing into something bigger. She pulled her hat down over her ears, shivered a little, and marched on towards her destination. She wondered if they might let Bec stay there, if she got the job. That would be amazing! She missed her best friend and doggy pal sooooooooooooo so much!! But that probably wouldn’t happen. They probably wouldn’t even hire her anyway! She sucked at talking to strangers, and she’d never made anything more complicated than instant coffee for her grandpa before. Sure, she was a fast learner, and could do complicated equations off the top of her head, completely take a part a computer and put it back together, what if she couldn’t make coffee??? It was snowing even harder now, and Jade considering turning back. Maybe she should do this another day, or not at all.. but as she considered this, she realized that she could see the store off in the distance. There was no point in turning back now! She took a deep breath, and told herself that at the very least, she should buy a cup of tea to warm herself up. She trudged on, stopping every now and then to clear her glasses, until finally she entered the shop. Her glasses fogged up immediately, and she quickly pulled them off her face and cleared them up.  She looked around, and realized all the lights were off. Were they closed? Or.. had the snow shut off the power?? Jade jumped as she heard a frustrated scream, and she hurried towards the source of the noise, not knowing if someone needed help or not.

This would never have happened if... if... IF! If anything! If she wasn't the manager, if she didn't work alone, if she just spent her time at Derse like a sane introvert. She cursed every inch of the etablishment, including the lone dog and two cats curled up in the (at least slightly) warm shop, while she stormed about throwing aprons and scarves and plastic wrap over the plants. It worked for palm trees, right? It took her a few seconds to break out of her panic of losing all of her expensive plants, most of which growing fresh ingredients for the shop, and fully process that someone opened the door. No wonder she could hear barking.

 "August, shush!" She frowned as she entered the main shop, glad he was in a kennel. "Hi, I'm very sorry but the intimidating factors of wind and snow have startled our electricity into hiding for the time being, so we are, in effect, closed for the night."  Kanaya gestured at the darkness, though not at har strange lack of coats and scarves to keep her warm. The plants needed them more.

Sewing By Hand

It was all over. Ruined. Busted. Her dress would never be finished. She threw herself dramatically over the couch, silent tears of stress welling up in her eyes. There was a dance coming up! One she likely couldn't attend, but a dance nevertheless, and every dance needs a new dress. It was almost innapropriate to not debut a dress at such an event. Yet, here she was. Cold and alone. Sewing machine broken. Life. Over.

After an innapropriate amount of nonperishable food and television, Kanaya recieved a call from the office. Reprimanding tones rung through her ears, and she flushed as she was informed of the monitering of time spent watching television. It took more than a few deep breaths before she could eloquently summon up a response that not only portrayed the drama of the day, but didnt make her look like a fool.

It took a few more deep breaths before the caller becan chuckling, and no mor than two seconds before Kanaya Maryam felt bile and indignation rise inside of her. Luckily for the assistant delegated to calling students, they knew of where she might get the expertise needed to fix her sewing machine, if she could only haul it there. The mechanics shop in the main building, where many students gather to tinker or create or learn how to turn robots into their army. Also, they stopped laughing soon enough.

With a click of her heels, it almost seemed like she hadn't lugged a 20 pound machine through too many hallways to count, and she had appeared at the doorway in no time at all. Almost. It was a little early, she certainly hoped the door was unlocked.

Glub Glub Fashion Baby

One thing that Meenah always found tedious about her job was the near constant need to put up events posters in the school. Promoting was always good, but Eridan wasn’t gonna do it unless held at javelin-point and Equius was still in training and that would have just been cruel to force him to glitterfy and put up over 50 posters. So there it was, an entire afternoon of busting out the glitter and scotch tape, and everything was up just in time for the teen heiress to get to work. Wow, lucky her.

Taking her motorcycle and parking it, she definitely didn’t expect anyone to actually take any interest in a ridiculous ‘new comer’s’ fashion and design ‘plaza’ at the coffee shop that Friday, but who knew, right? Oh yeah, she knew. This entire annual fashion bullshit would have been cool with Meenah, too, if she wasn’t constantly asked and expected to model frufru clothes because she was apparently tall and skinny like a model. Not like she couldn’t punch out any normal models, anyways, right? Well, at least she was at work finally.

A fresh poster slapped haphazardly on the student bulletin board shon like the sun in a sea of matte white queries about pet care, and it wasn't just because of the glitter thickly pasted on it that caught the flourescent light. If anyone had asked, she would have told them it was because of the phrase 'Design Plaza' in gold, but Kanaya was really struck by the newcomers fashion show. With the board directly in her path from the drama room and the dorms, Kanaya had already seen the board many a time, but early in the morning on a weekend? She felt lucky to have passed through. She wouldn't have felt so lucky if she had known 49 other versions of the same poster were scattered around campus.

Hastily, Kanaya wrote down the date, address, and name of the business in her day planner before sprinting all the way back to her dorm room to grab her fashion sketches and portfolio, stuffing them all into the same atache, and remembering that she was just not dressed for late January in Maine. 

After spending another solid hour preparing herself and carefully stuffing her portfolio and recent sketches into her one and only atache (bought for this very purpose), Kanaya finally got on the road. Derse Coffee was a lot closer than she thought, though, and she was out fo the cold in a reasonable amount of time before loitering anxiously in a corner, looking for someone who seemed slightly less occupied than the others.

Usually at a time like this Karkat was in his room with his face buried deep into a book. A method to avoid his room mate. Everything was awkward with him, it just wasn't comfortable. Today though, he had decided to take a walk around the building to clear his mind up and to avoid taking to his room mate. Things were just too weird around 13

him right now.

So Karkat was making his way around when he heard thumping from the girl's wing and wondered what was going on. There wasn't often a lot of noise around this time seeing that everyone was chilling after school or doing their homework. So something about the noise was suspicious and literally anything to distract him was good right now.

He didn't really want to be seen in the girl's wing though if it was administration or a teacher. Something about that just reeked of bad news. But nevertheless he trudged his way down the stairs to go investigate.

Down there was just a pile of luggage in the middle of the hall. Someone obviously was carrying this in, a new student perhaps? When he walked up to go see what was up, a girl began speaking to him. Oh - no she wasn't in the way, Karkat was just...

"No, no." He started. "You're not in my way, I just came to see what was making noise, I guess it was you dropping all these bags." He looked her over, she seemed very nice. Pretty, sweet looking girl. Had a matriarchal vibe going on, looked like she'd been traveling forever. "Do you need some help?"

"Oh," she replied, the wind rather knocked out of her metaphorical conversation sails. "I'm not sure if that's better or worse. Either way I wouldn't sneeze at some assistance. I don't even know if my roomate is home."  Kanaya shook her head, embarrassed that she made so much noise as to make someone come all the way to the girls wing. Maryams were notoriously bad with first impressions, though. She shouldn't have expected anything less than complete dread and embarrassment for the first weeks. Carefully navingating her mindfield of her brain and the hallway at the same time, Kanaya picked up two of the remaining five suitcases and mentally prepared herself for much more work than she would actually do, so that she could be pleasantly surprised at the end when everything worked out just fine without her personally escorting all of it into her new dorm room. The walls of said dorm room were bare, and she sighed inwardly. Her poor tapestries, all left at home. All her beautifully framed pictures, too. How could anyone live like this? She mumbled that aloud, even as she meant to mumble 'Do all dorm rooms look like this?'. Silently, Kanaya cursed herself and her lack of presence in her overtired mind.

6 Hours Ago

Kanaya had been thinking a lot about her lucky number today. Six hours by train, sixty dollars in her pocket, and going on six emails to the school and local businesses in Arrowsic. She could honestly say that applying for clubs and jobs simultaneously and through email was an even worse life decision than a six hour train ride. As the conductor finally -oh, sweet finality- announced their stop, Kanaya was already on the edge of her seat, awaiting the moment when the train would truly stop, so that she could stand. Of course, no one else cared for that rule. Even her old pal, seatmate stood up and pulled his bags out from above her head. How could you, seatmate.

Despite the looming changes ahead, Kanaya Maryam stood up as the train opened its doors and hauled ass off of the dizzying train and towards the future her new school. Maybe she could find someone to help her with her dizzying amount of luggage.

Daydreaming from the time she stepped off of the train to the time she reached the front halls of the dorm building, towards the seventh room in the hallway. She left half her bags out in the hallway, wishing them to stay put as she opened the door and recklessly placed the large bags in the living room. Her arms were tired, but it was seven PM, and her roomate was likely to be doing homework. She trudged back to the open door, mentally preparing herself for lugging more suitcases into her room as someone appeared in her peripheral vision, walking down the hall.  "Oh. I'm sorry. I'll clear this right out of your way. You see I just got here and it's been a little overwhelming hauling all of this luggage from the train station. Why I brought so much luggage is beyond me." All the time she had been talking, she had not moved an inch. Good job Maryam.
