a finger juts out. “ i’ll be careful, but don’t start actin’ like ‘m some kinda idiot just cause i’m off-world. i can still drive circles around this city … now that that’s outta the way, are ya comin’ or not? we got a town to save. ”

he stands within the large palm, gaze shifted outward. galactus speaks so loudly— and such old language that the eldest of the stars translate it for him in real time. supernovas are beautiful to most. they’re beautiful to him, but it feels like going to a funeral. except he’s not in his funeral best. they’re in a jacket and visor. they’re not 13 anymore either. they touch the age of 200 now. maybe his point of reference isn’t the best, or all that accurate. 

the star-lord speaks lowly. there’s a frown on his lips behind a metal configuration. “ this is my least favorite part. it hurts, and i hate the scut that comes after it, too. why are ya makin’ me watch this one? ”

“ yeah, but i do anyways. ” they always do. they always do. there’s an obligation from the stars to its master. its master doesn’t have to go where the stars command— but if he doesn’t, he’s sacrificing whatever planet or species or crisis may be taking place. that’s his burden, to be moved by the stars at a rate too impossible for just one man. 

“ regardless, i shoulda been there to help. ” they stand with him in the hall of justice, savoring the fact that not many lives were lost as there could’ve been. could’ve been even less if peter had made it to the scene on time. “ i appreciate the slack, but i don’t need it. ”

stupid flarking fear gas. krutaking cigarette. he should’ve seen it coming. for all the research he’d done on the chemical before actually coming face to face with scarecrow, no amount of preparation could quite capture the sheer dread it administers. peter finds himself on all fours, dropped in the fright of having lost his mother, the stars, his guardians, his—

“ fuck you. ” spat out. lungs cough out the gas, but the effects linger. the ghost of his mother. the whispers of his friends. — oh god, could they even call them their friends? what right does he have? after manipulating and lying to them?

he scoffs, finding the disbelief difficult to mask. how long had it been since the black vortex? since the trial of jean grey? awful times. good times. confusing times for the x-men and guardians alike— and certainly not one they’d repeat in a heartbeat. 

“ only if you’re here in kitty’s place. ” a smirk soon decorates his lips. “ she’s supposed to meet me here for a quick trade of info on a possible mutant we’re trackin’ in space. ” hand extends in greeting, warm and charming. “ don’t suppose ya have any idea on that one, gambit? ”

“ well that’s your prerogative. ” his displeasure is clear through the slight down curve of lips, and the way his previously crossed arms now find his hips. peter’s not mad, he’s just disappointed. “ keep whatever d’ast secrets ya want, but the scut ya know could help save the galaxy.”  

they move to drum fingers along the edge of the counter. should’ve reminded the brat that without him, reg would still be lost in that godforsaken wonderland his mind created. “ if your pride’s that important to ya, you have a bigger issue goin’ on. ”

˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ META, SUBJECT 002. POWERS, ABILITIES, AND ARSENAL : this meta is a look at the powers star-lord will have throughout continuity on this blog. in addition, this meta provides a brief look at peter's arsenal and various ships. rb partners are welcome to reference this meta at any time.

INTRODUCTION: this meta covers four sections of peter quill's life in regards to fluctuating powers according to canon. over the course of his life, peter has been subject to wildly varying powers depending on what stage of life he's in. afterward, i'll briefly discuss what powers apply to this blog, and then briefly look into his arsenal and ships.

PRIOR TO BECOMING STAR-LORD.

prior to becoming star-lord, peter had no discernible powers. he did, however, have half-spartoi physiology. the spartoi have extended lifespans by human standards. before becoming the star-lord, it'd be a mystery how peter aged. it's almost certain he'd live longer than a human, but likely no more than an extra 300-400 year span. as discussed in my spartax meta, the spartoi have tailored themselves and their lifestyle for maximum efficiency. because of this, spartoi also have enhanced durability and reflexes. peter has the same enhanced condition, and would have these abilities even if he never chose to become the star-lord.

another thing to note is that peter's body can regenerate itself. after losing an eye, he was able to regrow it after a century. this is another gift from his half-spartoi lineage.

UPON BECOMING STAR-LORD.

peter eventually goes to space and meets the master of the sun (tmos). tmos is the one to bestow peter with the title of "star-lord". with the title, he gives peter a set of pistols and a helmet. through his equipment, he's able to access his powers. something to understand is that during this early exploration of the sci-fi genre by comic books, the theme of "your equipment gives you powers" became radically popular. for this blog, canon is altered for peter to have these powers with or without his equipment.

flight. he describes his flight "like a hawk", which implies that peter's flying speed is fast and sudden. this is the first power he discovers and remains one of his favorites to this day.

survival in space. peter can survive in space without a helmet or any other life-sustaining gear. if he is to be the avatar of the stars, he can certainly survive out there. however, he's often seen with his visor in battle situations as extra protection and for foe analysis.

awareness of the elements. peter's awareness of the elements operates on no earthly scale. of course, he can tell how much water vapor is in the air, and other elemental things like that - but his awareness expands to a cosmic scale. his awareness goes beyond the physical, with only the earth element relating to "the physical world". he's in touch with energy, telepathic influence, and lifeforces, as stated in this issue. he's certainly no all-knowing being, however. his knowledge in regards to these things is purely on an element basis. water, fire, air, and the earth.

cosmic awareness. quill is able to navigate through any solar system, galaxy, or point of space without a map due to his bestowed knowledge of the cosmos. he's able to sense when balance shifts across the cosmos. additionally, star-lord can understand those secret hard-for-humans-to-comprehend truths about the universe.

language mastery. after becoming the star-lord, quill was gifted with the ability to understand and speak any language. though he eventually is implanted with a translation device canonically, it's somewhat unnecessary. he can understand any language spoken, read, or heard by the stars. the translation device is for any new language not comprehended by the stars yet.

technology mastery. another gift bestowed to them upon becoming the star-lord. quill has an innate and hardly understandable comprehension of all technology, alien or otherwise.

immortality. the star-lord mantle is immortal. when quill took on the role, he took on that immortality. it's both a blessing and a curse. he can choose to gift the mantle to someone else, but peter will never pass the burden onto anyone else.

relationship with the stars. peter has an intimate relationship with the stars themselves. he is their avatar and their master. he can commune with them. when mediating, they can reach an even higher form of awareness and speak to them regarding the goings on in the universe.

he forms relationships with them personally, like one would a brother or a sister. they can feel when a star is born or when one dies. there are some peter has a closer bond with (like our sun), and others he's just getting to know. the important thing is: peter respects the stars, and they trust him to keep them/the universe safe. quill has an especially intimate relationship with the living star, aurora. she's his spaceship , and fully sentient for a time. peter's able to feel whenever aurora takes hits in battle as if they're happening to him.

the cosmos have quite literally implemented itself into peter's body. when listening to his heartbeat, one might hear the space-like thrum of the cosmos within his chest. when looking into his eyes, one can see faint galaxies, reflective of wherever they are in the universe. his eye color is blue-green. white specks can be seen freckled within them. when he fails do to his job as the star-lord, his eyes are changed. see below. his pupils become off-white. his iris changes to be this mix of light blue/indigo-ish storm. his sclera become this black tone. this is supposed to be a form of punishment from the stars onto peter. when he fixes the balance in the universe, they'll go back to normal.

the stars speak to him constantly (which would be maddening if he was not who he is), whispering about the things they've seen in the universe. these are often warnings or secrets, guiding peter to places where he needs to be. quill would describe this sound as "static", and something i often write about in threads.

furthermore, he can name every single star - even those unnamed in this timeline, even those unseen; he knows them all and he sees them all. he also recalls the history of stars that have already died long before them in this timeline.

THE MASTER OF THE SUN. * this is referencing ewing's gotg run in 2021, when peter steals the gods' fire and gets trapped in morinus. during this time, he becomes tmos. along with that becomes new powers. he's also given a sun tattoo on his palm that will fade when he returns to the current dimension.

gravitational flight. this is different than peter's original flight power. as the master of the sun, peter can turn off the gravitational force of himself and those around them, allowing for flight.

light generation. when peter has had time to meditate, his body produces a glow. this isn't a cute, harmless glow, this is powerful light energy that can rip apart anyone in his radius.

telepathic resistance. peter became resistant to psionic interference. even a telepath on par with moondragon can not get through their mental defenses.

living power plant. after gaining control of some metaphysics dynamics across the universe, peter learned how to be his own power source for his weapons at the time.

heightened cosmic awareness. because peter already had a level of cosmic awareness, his knowledge of the universe was heightened. he could feel planets breathing and more in tune with the smaller things across the universe, rather than the stars, themselves.

RETURNING TO OUR DIMENSION, AND WHAT'S RELAVENT TO MAIN CONTINUITY ON THIS BLOG.

in canon, peter loses all the abilities mentioned in the above note paragraph. however, for this portrayal, they keep some of these powers as an alternate version of the original ability.

flight. peter loses the "gravitational" part of his flight, and instead returns to the regular version of flight they had before.

solar power output and detection. this takes the place of peter's former light generation and power plant abilities. peter can detect solar radiation and solar energy, this strongly applies to people like kryptonians and sun-based characters. he will be able to tell they're packing more solar energy than a normal human. furthermore, he outputs a low level of solar power radiation, being an avatar of the stars. they can act as something similar to a battery for those who draw their powers from the sun.

telepathic awareness. though peter can no longer fully resist any telepathic assault, he can tell when telepathy is being used on him or around him.

cosmic awareness. peter loses the vastness of his awareness during this time, returning to the former cosmic awareness they had before. however, they haven't lost the knowledge they obtained while using their previous cosmic awareness, so that can be used when necessary.

these powers combined with what peter recieved when first meeting tmos are what makes up this portrayal. his time as tmos has come to a pass, and they've returned to their true state as the universe's star-lord, the one who does the bidding of the stars, themselves.

i also want to note that peter's position as star-lord is something pre-ordained by fate and the cosmos . this was decided before his birth. while this isn't necessarily a "superpower" of his, it's important to note that the cosmos/stars will go out of their way to protect their star-lord when he's particularly vulnerable.

ABILITIES.

marksmanship. through peter's almost 200 years of life, he's become well-acquainted with many types of firearms across the galaxies. it's likely that if he finds a weapon, he can use it immediately.

martial artist. peter's been trained in many version of hand-to-hand combat and martial art styles. both drax and gamora keep these skills sharp while on the milano.

strategy. seen in annihilation and conquest, peter has an incredible eye for battle strategy and problem solving. this is also seen when he takes up the mantle of the king of spartax after a massive political rift.

astronomy knowledge. this comes from his time studying at nasa. in order to become an astronaut, nasa requires a stem master's degree. peter's is in astronomy.

universal knowledge. throughout peter's journey across the stars, they've witnessed a multitude of alien cultures and history. they're able to recall this knowledge with ease and use on a day-to-day basis.

pilot. this is another ability from their time before being the star-lord. being an astronaut, nasa encourages their potential candidates to have a pilot's license, which they earned. from there on, peter taught himself to fly a variety of spaceships.

ARSENAL.

translator implant. this is a cybernetic implant on their neck that allows them to understand any and all languages known to the galaxy, spoken or signed. as i stated before, this is a redundant addition to his arsenal, but they keep it on them, just in case there's a language the stars are unaware of.

space helmet. this helmet has gone through some aesthetic changes throughout the years, all done by rocket. it began as a part of his equipment from tmos, but was then altered to fit a more modern appearance. while this is on, he can see information regarding lifeforms and materials around him. he can also remotely pilot the milano while it's on. it "clicks off" - pulls away from his face and folds in on itself like a necklace - with a push of a button hooked behind his ear.

jet boots. these are worn to help control their flight, or if they need an extra boost, have their powers taken away, and so on. these are worn as a big "what if" and caution. these are also used for quick dodges and movements that don't require full flight.

the milano. a ravager ship taken off the hands of yondu, himself. the relationship between yondu and this portrayal is minimal at best . yondu never raised him, nothing of the sort. instead, yondu was a part of the band sent out to kill their mother. yondu only remains alive because peter would find more inconveniences if he was dead. that said, peter stole this ship from yondu and repurposed it into the milano. it has a full-sized cockpit for all the members + guests to sit on. there's a living area, bunkers for each of the guardians + guests, a kitchen area, a bathroom, a server room, a comms room, a cargo bay, and a training area. it's fully weaponized with rocket's upgrades and can survive many attacks.

aurora/ship. peter's beloved ship, their first ever vessel. aurora is a living star that bends to peter's will. because of this, she molded him a ship and lived with him in the vessel as a companion for many years. ship changes at his will, expanding or shrinking depending on their company. it's powered by aurora, herself. this living star served peter well for many years, and even helped him take on one of galactus' heralds and saved the planet. in doing so, aurora sacrificed her consciousness. now, ship is still a living star catered to peter, but she's lost her sentience. aurora will never be recovered, though ship lives on. he travels in this vessel when taking a break from the guardians. rocket and groot keep the milano.

CONCLUSION: peter's had a wide range of abilities in comics, and this portrayal attempts to narrow them down and make sense of what they've been given in how i choose to write star-lord. a hefty majority of this headcanon is deeply rooted in that early exploration of sci-fi that marvel began with star-lord's character and i aim to carry on that exploration through threads and further development. i know this is far different than the mcu and what modern comics have turned peter into, but i think i've always been clear on where i've stood regarding basing myself in older comics and really tailoring to that larger-than-life cosmic entity star-lord began as.

he sits beside her, poking the fire with a stick. memory flickers, igniting sickening nostalgia over nights like these that were shared with his mother. but that was all a lifetime ago. of course, they’ve changed; they couldn’t help but to change. this universe was preparing its next star-lord. 

so perhaps they are different, sitting here with the last of the ancients. maybe that’s alright, and perhaps the sickly-sweet nostalgia will fade with time— wishful thinking.
