Stony AUs I Want to Read
Updated MAY 2026 | Note: I get that some of these might already be written somewhere, or be redundant. But it’s my list. Basically if I consume any media at all, I want it to be Steve and Tony. If any of these fics exist, please send it to me! My ask box is open! I've added more AUs under the cut and update this post occasionally with more as I think of them!
Pretty Woman AU: I’d sell a kidney for this, for a close recreation of the 1990 film. Tony Stark is a rich corporate raider from New York (haunted by a rocky relationship with his late father) and having just gotten out of a relationship, steal-borrows his lawyer Obadiah Stane’s sports car and ends up on Hollywood Boulevard where he meets a struggling artist turned escort, Steve Rogers. Steve lives with his best friend and roommate, Natasha (or Bucky, this could be anyone). They’re immediately drawn to each other and Tony hires Steve to be his date for the remainder of his time in the city. They go on all the dates. Tony flies Steve to San Francisco and takes him to the opera. Stane suspects Steve is just a corporate spy, and Tony has to fess up, “Obie, he’s an escort.” So Stane propositions Steve for his services and Steve is furious. Anyway, they fall in love. I would pay someone to write this, honestly. (Annie wrote this!)
The Walking Dead AU: Zombie apocalypse AU is also fine, but I really like the way the story plays out in the first 3 seasons of this show and would like to see a mirror of that. Steve and Bucky as Rick and Shane essentially, two buddy cops. Steve thought dead, but he runs into Clint in the city who leads him back to his camp, where his husband and son Peter have been surviving with the group (other Avengers). Tony’s the one who gets shot in the forest (chest wound) and just, so much drama and action and angst to be had here. Except, no, Tony and Bucky didn’t have some weird affair when they thought Steve was dead. I am not a WinterIron shipper.
Grey’s Anatomy AU: A doctor/hospital AU is fine, but I really want a stony version of those first two seasons of Grey’s. Steve as the new intern whose mother Sarah was a famous surgeon. Tony as the world-renowned neurosurgeon who hooks up with Steve at a bar and they start this whirlwind romance until, oops- a gorgeous redhead shows up at the hospital. Tony turns to Steve. “Steve, I am so sorry.” The woman approaches. “Pepper, what are you doing here?” She looks at them and says, “Well, you’d know if you bothered to return any of my phone calls.” She looks at Steve. “Hi. I’m Virginia Stark. And you must be the man who’s been screwing my husband.” YOU DON’T KNOW HOW BAD I NEED THIS. (THIS EXISTS)
Tarzan AU: Based off the Disney movie of the same name. Steve is an infant when he and his parents are shipwrecked. They manage to survive for 3 or 4 years but his parents are ultimately killed and the only thing he has left linking him to them is a (very plot convenient) necklace or locket that has his name (”Steven”) engraved on it. He manages to survive to adulthood on his own; he isn’t raised by animals, but he has a respect for them and they know of and tolerate his existence and he can often commune with them. A team of explorers funded by the Stark family arrive and set up camp (I imagine it would be a team of 3 just like the movie, maybe Tony and Bruce and then Brock Rumlow as the brutish escort?). Basically a lot of adorable scenes that mirror the movie, Tony teaching Steve about civilization, Steve becoming protective of Tony as he falls for him, and so many other good things! I’m shameless for a Disney AU.
Taken AU: Simple enough. Tony’s a rich and important businessman/inventor. Steve is former Special Forces who happens to be dating him. Things are going really great until Tony gets kidnapped on a business trip. “I don’t know who you are. Whatever it is you think you’re going to get out of this, you’re mistaken. I don’t have anything but a particular set of skills that I’ve acquired over a very long career. I’m going to find you. And I’m going to kill you.” *keyboard smash* (I actually wrote this like 10 years ago but the file is lost to time and all I have left are memories...)
The Notebook AU: Okay, I’ve seen this movie once, but the rich boy and poor boy meeting at a carnival and falling in love in the 1940s? Steve writing Tony letters? Miscommunications? Kissing in the rain? BYE I NEED IT PLEASE
Dying Young AU: I’m not sure anyone else has ever heard of this movie? I haven’t seen it in years but I’ve always found the plot to be super angsty. Tony is highly-educated and rich, but he’s sick. (The movie is about cancer, but this doesn’t have to be cancer) Steve answers an ad to be his caretaker. They fall in love. Tony refuses some painful treatment because he’d rather go live a little and have some quality in his life with Steve than have a painful, artificially extended life. Angst abound. Happy ending would be nice.
Grey’s Anatomy (again) AU: Another Grey’s AU but not a Meredith/Derek thing, but instead an Izzie/Denny thing. Tony is admitted to the hospital with a heart problem and Steve, an intern, falls for him. Tony needs a transplant, and Steve cuts his LVAD wire to falsely get Tony to the top of the transplant list. “Do this for me or I’ll never forgive you!” ... “For dying?” ... “No! For making me love you!” OW!!!!! I’d prefer two endings to this because I’m selfish and I like to indulge: a happy one, and then one where it follows the show and Tony dies, and the other Avengers/surgeons walk in his room to see Steve on the bed with him, holding him and crying. “Steve, that’s not Tony. The minute his heart stopped beating, that stopped being Tony.” But Steve won’t hear it. “An hour ago he was proposing. Now he’s going to the morgue. Isn’t that the most ridiculous shit you’ve ever heard?” AND THENNN a happy ending because I love angst but I could never leave it that way. *sobs*
Star Trek AU: This was absolutely inspired by a manip I saw once, and I’m not looking for any kind of certain plot from any episode or movie, just obviously: Avengers in Space. Steve is the Captain (gold), Tony and Bruce are the science officers (blue), Clint and Natasha and Thor are the red shirts (but they live). Ugh, this would be fun. (Sineala wrote this FOREVER AGO)
Sleeping Beauty AU: Does this even need explaining? Give it. Respectfully. In fact I’ll just list the Disney-specific fairy tales I want Stony-fied. Emphasis on the Disney-specific.
Marry Me AU: I saw the trailer for this movie and immediately. Stony brain. Tony and someone (Tiberius? He’s a good bad boy.) are famous and famously dating. I don’t really think I’d enjoy an AU where Tony was actually a singer/performer, but maybe he’s just a really famous smart guy? The details aren’t why I’m here. They have a plan to get married on stage at one of their venues/shows, but right before, Tony catches Tiberius cheating. In a moment of sheer heartbreak and panic, he locks eyes with a stranger in the crowd and marries him on the spot. Hijinks ensue.
The Host AU: More specifically, the Stephenie Meyer book ‘The Host’. (For the sake of this post I am not referencing the movie as I have not seen it and don’t want to). I always enjoyed this book, like a guilty pleasure because I think it’s really tropey, and recently I saw an anon somewhere (I forget) that brought up this exact au, so I know I’m not alone. There are about 4 important characters in this book that I think stony would fit into with some story tweaking, the original human (who was overtaken by a host), their partner (who survived hiding in the caves with the rest of a large group, aka other Avengers/characters), then there is the host soul who is in the original human’s body (who slowly falls for the human’s lover because they share a mind) and the person that the host eventually falls for. I especially love scenes where the original body (let’s just say, Tony’s physical body) is brought before everyone and the host who has possessed Tony is bewildered and super happy to see Steve, who promptly walks up and punches him in the face. Because to Steve, that isn’t Tony, that’s a body taken over. This story would work really well with two main ships, you’d mainly just have to pick which relationship you’d prefer. Tony could be the alien host who eventually falls for the other guy (Steve) and is eventually put into a new body (the Tony we know), while the original human could have been some throwaway characters or another ship. OR, it could be Tony’s body and mind overtaken, and Steve hates this alien in his body. I probably explained all this like SHIT, it really is easy to understand if you’ve read the book, it’s just got some sweet and tropey and guilty pleasure moments. I haven’t read it in a while, I should pick it up...
Meet the Robinsons AU: Edward is a young child in an orphanage, left there by his well meaning mother. He’s inventive and too smart for his own good. He’s lonely and no one wants to adopt him. One day, a kid named Peter shows up and whisks him to the future. Edward has to fix this kid’s time machine all of a sudden, but not without meeting his entire family first. Peter has two dads, but one isn’t home. So Edward meets one of his dads, a muscular, cheerful man named Steve who thinks it’s totally rad that Edward is an inventor. Edward asks about Peter’s other dad, but Peter is tight lipped. There’s uncle Bucky and uncle Sam, who seem to constantly bicker and berate each other but are suspiciously inseparable. Aunties Natasha and Carol, who spend a lot of time in the gym. Uncle Clint, Bruce, younger adoptive cousins Wanda and Pietro. BIG family! Edward really likes all of them, and they like him. Plot plot plot. Peter’s family finds out Edward is from the past, and Steve tells his son that he HAS to take Edward back. Edward is hurt by this. More plot plot plot. Eventually, Edward meets Peter’s other father, who is actually him, Anthony Edward Stark. He returns to the past, is adopted by Edwin Jarvis and his wife... pretty sigh
Shrek 4 AU: Dear God hear me out, I just love this trope, this “thrust into an alternate reality where my lover and friends and family don’t know me, and when I find my lover, they’re hostile, and we have to fall in love all over again” stuff. I know this plot is in lots of stuff I just always think of Shrek 4.
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. AU: In 1963, CIA agent Steve Rogers extracts Anthony Stark, son of an alleged Nazi-scientist-turned U.S. collaborator at the end of WWII, from East Berlin, evading KGB-operative Natasha Romanov. Something in this school of thought would be a fun read. <3
Pride and Prejudice AU: Period piece. Romance. I’ve said too much
Just Like Heaven AU: I recently found out about this movie and the plot is *chef’s kiss*. I need it stony-fied. Tony is a widower (RIP Pepper) who begins to see an apparition of a man named Steve who refuses to believe he is dead. Steve is actually in the hospital after an accident and his best friend/power of attorney Bucky is about to make the difficult call to take him off life support. Tony’s fallen in love with Steve and does everything he can to stop it once he figures out what’s going on.
Hercules AU: Surely this exists???? I wouldn’t want to see a carbon copy of the Disney movie, but one that’s close enough. Steve as Hercules, Tony as Meg who made a deal with the devil. Yum. Good soup. (MEIDUI WROTE IT OMG)
Ella Enchanted AU: Steve is cursed with obedience. The thing that makes me want this au is the scene where Steve would be ordered by Obadiah Stane to kill Tony, the prince, and through tears, looks himself in the mirror as he’s holding a dagger to Tony’s back and declares, “You will no longer be obedient.” *crying*
Sinbad/Pirates of the Caribbean AU: This doesn't need much explaining. Basically one is a pirate and the other is the rich or well-off stowaway that joins the crew and they fall in love.
The Little Mermaid AU: Steve is one of a handful of merfolk who live in Atlantis and protect the seas under the tutelage of Nicholas Fury. Steve is the strongest of his team, and is his downtime is fascinated with humans and their lives. His interest in humans is known by the others, but only his best friend Bucky knows how deep it actually goes. Steve frequently meets with a human named Sam at the surface, who rows out in a small boat to meet with Steve to occasionally share gifts from the surface world with him. One day, Steve spots a King aboard a ship and is instantly infatuated. A storm brews in and King Anthony is lost at sea, but Steve rescues him before he perishes. From Anthony's perspective, he wakes up on the shore and sees a golden angel hovering above him, but he is convinced it was a real person, and is determined to find him. King Anthony has a fascination with all things and has his own private workshop and collection of knick knacks from his own adventures, like Steve's grotto. Meanwhile, Steve is lured to Thanos, who has a plot to destroy the surface world and kill all humans because of how they treat the sea, and he also wants to rule the seas himself and he knows that he needs Steve out of the way to do so. So, he enchants Steve to become human in exchange for his voice. Steve ends up on land with Tony, and the 1989/2023 plots kind of converge for the rest of the plot.
50 First Dates AU: Yes, the Adam Sandler movie. Stick with me. We're in New York, not Hawai'i, and Tony is just a non-powered Tony who stumbles into a diner one day and meets Steve. Lovely, charming Steve, who tells Tony he's on leave from the military and agrees to meet with him in that diner again in a week. Steve goes home where he is staying with his married best friends, Bucky and Natasha, and they clearly have a routine to keep Steve happy and comfortable. A week goes by and Tony starts flirting with Steve again, only to be met with shocked anger. It follows similar beats as the film, but Tony's wealth allows him to poor money into research for treatment for Steve. They get married. I also roleplayed this with a friend and might rewrite it someday.
Beauty and the Beast AU: Another Disney AU and another roleplay I did with a friend once that might get polished up and posted one day. Tony is a lost man whose soul has been bound to a peculiar set of armor. Steve ends up taking his mother's place as Tony's "prisoner". Follows the Disney film, roughly. Lots of opportunity for sexy armor things.
Age of Adaline AU: I more or less enjoy the concept of this movie's plot, and it's very in line with Steve's canon story already. Where Steve would marry Peggy, join the Army, be experimented on through the super soldier program and stop aging. Instead of being frozen, he just lives his life "on the run" and changing his identity, eventually meeting Tony in the modern day and falling in love with him inspires him to stop running. His aging is somehow restarted so he can grow old with Tony. Idk, it was a romantic movie and I wear my Stony glasses everywhere.
iRobot AU: I know that not a lot of people really like this movie, but I've always enjoyed it as an action flick. Steve is an ex-cop turned detective with a healthy distrust of the humanoid robots that serve humanity after one chose to rescue him in a car crash but allowed a young girl to die. Dr. Howard Stark, the CEO of Stark Robotics, falls to his death, and Steve is assigned to the case despite it being an apparent suicide. Obadiah Stane steps up to be the stand-in CEO of the company because Howard's son Tony trusts him and doesn't want the position. Tony has spent his life helping his father design and build these robots, and he is insulted when he meets Steve that Steve hates and distrusts them. They team up to get to the bottom of it all, per the film's plot with a few changes, namely that Howard had come to suspect that Stane was going to stage a takeover of his company and Stane actually murdered Howard, using his own means to corrupt any footage or data that would link it back to him, and Stane originally allowed Steve to investigate the case because he knew that he would be the only detective more willing to place the blame for the murder on a robot. And obviously, Steve and Tony fall in love.
Passenger AU: Yes, that icky Chris Pratt movie where he intentionally wakes up Jennifer Lawrence on a sleeper ship headed for a new planet. I've never actually seen this movie, just know the bones of the plot, and I think Steve and Tony would fit really well into a good story here, specifically one where there is no intentional waking of the other, maybe both of their sleeping pods malfunction or something. Who doesn't love a sci-fi romance?
Pacific Rim AU: This does not need explaining. (scifigrl47 wrote one!)
Titanic AU: Tony Stark, the miserable rich boy about to be married off to Tiberius Stone, boards a ship with his parents and meets poor artist Steve Rogers and falls in love? Steve talking Tony off the railing? Steve drawing Tony? Tony giving the name "Anthony Rogers" at the end? STEVE IS ACTUALLY ALIVE AND FINDS HIM? *reeeeeee*
Tron Legacy AU: Years ago, Howard Stark, the CEO of Stark Enterprises, disappears. Twenty years later, his son Tony, now the company's primary shareholder, discovers a message from his father in his old lab. He finds an old particle laser and is digitized into the virtual reality world his father created. There he is discovered to be human but rescued by Steve, a skilled warrior and isomorphic algorithm. Plot ensues. Steve returns to the real world with Tony. Lots of smooches.
