It took more than 70 days for the killers of Ahmaud Arbery to be arrested. Not because they were on the run, not because they proclaimed innocence, but because local and state law enforcement and the criminal justice system was going to let them go free. There was no plan to arrest and charge the men who took Ahmaud's life, but then video leaked showing three men stalking, trapping, attacking, and killing an innocent black man out for his daily job because he 'looked like a man who had been involved in a robbery.' of it had not come to light, we would have never known the name of Ahmaud Arbery, we would have never had celebrities and hashtags pushing for action. We would have never had an army of folks behind the scenes working emails, phone calls, and sources trying to get the names and information of the monsters responsible. This video shows a modern day lynching by a former police officer, his son, and another local man, in the State of Georgia, and the fact that it took 74 days for these cowards to be put in handcuffs and charged is disgraceful. And just an arrest doesn't even come close to actual justice, which the African American community obviously doubts will prevail in this case. We need these vile 'men' held in jail until trial, we need them convicted at the highest degree, and we need them to spend the rest of their lives in a prison. Ahmaud Arbery had a full life ahead of him and these bastards took it from him, they took him from his family, they took him from his community, and they took him from our country. They must pay.
When I was active at protests during the Black Lives Matter movement, a lot of you, friends and family from Georgia who will see this post, couldn't figure out why I, a white man, would march in the streets of Philadelphia, you couldn't understand why I was angry and upset, why I was hurt, why I would risk arrest multiple times for people I did not know, but if you watch the video of this disgusting act, and you do not feel the same rage I felt for the countless black and Latino men, women, and children... Yes, even children... Who were hunted like game, beaten, killed, mocked, assassinated by the media, and whose families never received an iota of justice, then my question is why aren't you protesting? Why aren't you using your voice and platform to, at the very least, call for accountability? Why don't you feel anger? Why do you choose not to see the real terrorism our country faces and take it head on? Racism and white supremacy has killed more good, innocent, hard working Americans than you can imagine and you have the nerve to look at me and ask why instead of looking at yourself and asking why not? Today, there is a renewed hope of getting actual justice and while that cannot bring back the life that was taken or unshed the blood that has poured out across this country, it can be a turning point. All of you who were confused and conflicted by the protests after Trayvon Martin was killed now see a glimpse of what happened that night. You see why black men who have done nothing wrong run the moment they are confronted. You see why there is so much pain in their eyes and so much fear in their hearts. And it is not their job to change that, it is ours. So for those of you who have never experienced the heartbreak you claim to feel as you post your messages on social media about Ahmaud Arbery, for those of you wondering how this could happen, for those of you who suddenly see it isn't a myth or a media hype, to you I say welcome. Because the more people who understand that pain, the more people who wonder, the more people who speak up, the more we have a chance of beating the greatest threat to our country - racism and hate.
