TONY STARK in IRON MAN (2026) #1 PREVIEW Art by CARMEN CARNERO
Hello and Happy New Year! đ Hope 2026 brings better things. 2025âŠwas justâŠugh. Hoping to actually get Pepperony week happening this time around. I have not forgotten.
Tonyâs Childhood. Part 2.1. Effects: Own Will
Before this part, be sure to read Part 1.
If you're not aware of Tony's strange understanding of the importance of his own wants and needs, check out this post from daydreamsandnightlights.
Here I will try to explain the roots of this behavior.
At age 4 Tony built his first circuit board (IM1)
At age 6 built his first engine (IM1)
Let's think about what it meant that he built all these things at such an early age. Was this his own or his father's will?
Letâs take Morgan for comparison â she is indeed a brilliant kid too, since at the age of 5 she can count up to 3000 (ordinary kids count up to 1000 at the age of 8), knows how much is in a ton, what âdisintegrateâ means and can easily manipulate her dad, a genius.
Looking at Morgan's behavior, we can assume that she is already capable of building a circuit board under the guidance of her father. But she doesn't. Because her father does not demand this from her. She is a kid. She plays with plush dogs and beavers, sleds on Captain Americaâs shield, and likes to have bedtime stories read to her before bed. She sneaks into her fatherâs garage because there are interesting things inside that she can take and play with, not to build something and add it to the list of impressive achievements.
The question is: did Tony want to create things because he liked it, or because his father did it and wanted his son to do the same?
We know that Howard had plans for Tony to "change the world" with Howard's ideas about the future. Apparently, he was preparing Tony for this purpose.
Do small children have a desire to tinker and build things? Some yes. Do they want to or should they play with cubes and constructor sets? Yes. Do they want to or should they work with real motorcycle engines and soldering irons? Hell no. They usually don't have the appropriate motor skills to do this, so they can easily hurt themselves. I'll talk more about this later when I discuss his pain tolerance.
I think itâs impossible to say now whether Tony was interested in engineering from that age (I mean sincere desire, not ability). So we cannot answer that question. But I doubt 4-year-old Tony realized what he was doing when building computer parts. He liked it though. Because those were probably the only times he spent time with his father.
Howard continued to deny his son his will when Tony was sent to boarding school when Tony was 7 years old. There he had a regulated, planned life for 7 years. Then college for another 7. And then became the youngest CEO at 21. None of this sounds like a childâs âI did what I wantedâ.
He did not express his will but pleased others. Because this way he received a little love. Or a substitute for love, to be precise. And when, perhaps for the first time, he was taken care of by Yinsen, who saved him, even in such a terrible way, and died for him, he was incredibly grateful. And after that, his attitude towards people changed.
But not the attitude of people towards him, since they continued to want something from him, expecting the same behavior that they were used to seeing from the ârich and famousâ.
*Doesnât want to celebrate his birthday with a bunch of strangers in his house? Wants to spend his last days with the woman he loves? DENIED*
*Needs psychological support from people he trusts? DENIED*
*Wants to save the team from a breakup because he cares and knows whatâs coming? DENIED*
Conclusion: Tony didn't belong to himself his whole life. He didnât use to defend his own, laid deep within, interests. First, his will was moved aside by his fatherâs. Then Staneâs and the publicâs. Fury then came with his Initiative without asking what Tony wanted. Then S.H.I.E.L.D. came to him (not) asking to find Tesseract and save the world. Then the whole team came. Then the government with its Accords, and so on and so forth. None of them bothered to ask, âWhat do you want, Tony?â. And the only times he insisted on something, were the times when he tried to keep the team together and prevent their death.

Tonyâs Childhood. Part 1: Identifying facts
In the MCU, Tony sometimes acts like a kid. There is a reason behind every behavior, so I wondered what it was like for him when he was a real kid.
So, the questions of the day: what do we know about Tony's childhood? Did he have one? And, most importantly, how did it affect him?
Letâs first list what we know from the movies:
At age 4 Tony built his first circuit board (IM1)
At age 6 built his first engine (IM1)
Was sent to a boarding school by Howard (IM2)
Cracked the Pentagonâs firewall in high school on a dare (AoU)
Had a nanny until the age of 14 (IM3)
Went to college at 14 (IM1)
Built Dum-E and U when he was there (IM1)
At 17 graduated summa cum laude from MIT (IM1)
Continued his education until his parentsâ death (CW)
Tonyâs genius gave him two things: the brain and the pain. And by the pain, I mean that instead of interacting and bonding with his parents, enjoying life, playing, having fun, making friends, taking care of pets, and all the other things children do to gradually prepare for adulthood and grow up "healthy", he got this list of achievements. That doesnât make a person normal.
Parents
We know his relationship with Howard was complicated. Howard loved him in his own way. He had too many things to do to be a good father: SI, S.H.I.E.L.D., scientific projects, trying to build a better future with clean energy, etc. All good, except when you want your child to love you back. Especially if in the tiny amount of time you spend with him, you donât show him any signs of affection.
What do we know about Maria? Her name, what she looked like, that she played the piano, and died at Winter Soldierâs hand on Dec 16, 1991. Thatâs it. She didnât spend much time with Tony either. Remember, he even had a nanny, instead of a mother. Tony's words about her showed that he loved her, but he didn't talk much about her. Because she wasnât present in his life enough. Why? BecauseâŠ
School
Howard sent Tony to a boarding school.
Hereâs in the S.H.I.E.L.D.s file we have this information about the school:
âPhillips Academy, Andover, MA 1977-1984â
This means he was there from age 7 to 14. Howard sent him to a boarding school when he was SEVEN.
Phillips Academy Andover serves grades 9-12 only (it is a college preparatory school). Thus, either this is a mistake by the creators of the film/file, or Tony, due to his genius, became an exception. Since the early age he was already at school was also mentioned in IM2 tie-in comics, and in Earth-616 that was also 7, we can mark 1977-1984 as valid.
Think about it again: Tony was sent to boarding school in another state when he was 7 years old. He spent another 7 years there, alone, among high school-aged teenagers. No parents around, no peers.
For example, even Hogwarts accepts 11-year-old children, and they live with their peers. Now imagine Harry Potter, at the age of 7, is thrown into a dorm with 7th-year students and locked there. Doesnât make a person normal either, does it?
Nannies and Jarvis
Since Tony was at the boarding school, there are two options for how he could have a nanny (mentioned in IM3) and spend time with Edwin Jarvis:
1) He was at the boarding school with a nanny. There is almost no possibility that the nanny was Edwin Jarvis because Jarvis was Howardâs butler and had other responsibilities.
2) He had a nanny at home in the summer and during short school breaks. In this case, his parents couldnât even give him this little of their precious time.
In any case, he could only see Jarvis at home, a few months a year at most.
Note: There is a date error in IM3, stating Tony was 14 in 1983. This is clearly an error and we can omit this detail.
Bullying
Remember this dialog between Tony and Harley in IM3?
0:45:15 â Harley asks him how he knew he was being bullied at school. Tony doesn't answer. He gives him a non-lethal flash thing to "discourage bullying."
We see that Tony knew exactly what was going on with Harley at school. Because thatâs exactly what happened to him there. Harley reminded him of himself. Brilliant kid with no friends and practically no parents. He was bullied by 9th-12th graders.
If he had a nanny with him at the school, that probably made things even worse. He would be bullied because he has a nanny, and despite he has one to look after him.
In Part 2 we will discuss how all this affected him.
Robert Downey Jr in Captain America: Civil War
The first time Tony invited Pepper, Happy and Rhodey to his and Peter's movie night after a lab session, everyone is sitting around waiting for the popcorn to be made and Peter is giggling at his phone and then Peter hands his phone to Tony excitedly saying look Mr stark what Ned send me and all 3 of them looks up because Tony DO not like being handed things but Tony casually take the phone from Peter and laughs and give it back. That's the exact moment Pepper and Rhodey realize how special Peter is...Happy is just smug cause he already knows

"I mean 'friends' is the term im going to use but I think you know where I am going with this."
"Please enlighten me, Dr. Stark. I am just a lawyer after all -- I like things spelled out for me in concrete, somewhat straightforward terms so there can be no confusion." He offers a small amused smile. "Because implication doesn't necessarily hold up in court, as you might be aware. Assumption, as well."
"Oh I know what you are trying to do Murdock." He grinned a bit. "But come on now, you may wear a sweater saying you aren't but obviously you are Daredevil's boyfriend. He comes in and out of this apartment frequently." He mused. "Or are you Daredevil?" He rose a brow glancing around. "Hm?"
