I stumble into the greenhouse, wiping stray tears from my burning cheeks. "Yeah, that’s exactly why I don't go to family teas," a voice says, startling me.
Turning toward the sound, I spot Prince Minho, watering a pot of roses. "Oh... Minho. Sorry, I... I didn’t know anyone was here," I mumble, clearing my throat and trying to look composed. He sets the watering can down and brushes the dirt from his palms.
"Let me guess, Queen Ariana?" he asks, walking over to the water fountain. He sits on the ledge and pats the spot beside him.
"Sorta... I just feel like I don't fit in here. Everything I do feels wrong, and she really has a way of pointing it out. Plus, your dad doesn't seem very fond of me." I say, sitting next to him.
Minho sighs. "Look, Queen Ariana isn't exactly the nicest person. In fact, she’s basically a wicked witch to me. And my dad is an idiot. He’s so brainwashed by the 'royalty' propaganda his own father fed him that he’s lost his mind. Don't take what they say to heart. Besides... my brother sure seems to like you." He smirks, and I feel a sudden rush of heat climb to my face.
"Don't be ridiculous. Chan is just... nice. Plus, he’s to be engaged to Princess Luciana tomorrow at the ball."
"Wanna change that?" He smirks, grabbing my hand and pulling me up from my seat.
"This is a horrible idea. I don't want to get in between them," I sigh, sitting on the edge of the bed in Minho’s room. Beside me, Seungmin, the red panda shifts restlessly.
"Come on, Y/N. For once, just do something to make yourself happy. Even if you don't do it for him, go have some fun," Seungmin says, his voice small but encouraging.
"Fine. I guess a ball wouldn't hurt."
"Seriously, you’re going to have to teach me how to speak animal. All i heard from him just now was sqeak sqeak." Minho mutters as he rummages through racks of designer clothing he had delivered to his quarters.
"You know you don't have to do all this, right? Any dress would work."
"Bullshit," Minho counters, "Let’s see... Oh! This one, Island blue, it matches your vibe. But it’s missing something," he mumbles, holding the shimmering fabric up against me.
I feel a gentle nudge at my legs. I look down to see Hyunjin, standing there with a shimmering set of his own feathers held carefully in his beak.
"Hyun... are you sure?" I gasp, crouching down to his level.
"If there’s anyone I’d give these to, it’s you," he chirps proudly.
I smile at the peacock, taking the vibrant feathers and handing them to Minho. By the time he finishes stitching them into the hem and bodice of the dress, it's already night fall.
"It looks beautiful." I stare in awe at the mirror.
"All thanks to my feathers," Hyunjin gloats, puffing out his chest until Seungmin swats him playfully with his bushy red tail.
"Okay, enough chit-chat. The ball starts in five minutes better get running," Minho says, ushering me toward the door.
"Wait, you’re not coming?"
He laughs. "You should know by now that royal events are not my thing."
The muffled sounds of music and laughter echo from behind the grand double doors. I push my anxiety down, slowly pressing the doors open. At the bottom of the staircase, the room is full of dancing and chatting. I spot Chan and giggle, as he's currently forcing prince Jeongin to dance with him.
Suddenly, a wave of gasps ripples through the room. Every pair of eyes turns upward toward me. I gulp, slowly descending the stairs. Chan lets go of Jeongin and walks toward me.
"Y/N... you look amazing. Would you care for a dance?"
I hesitate, my eyes flickering to Princess Luciana. To my surprise, she just gives me a soft, knowing smile. "I... I don't know how."
Chan laughs, his eyes sparking. "Any girl who can face off against crocodiles can handle a dance with me."
We dance for what feels like hours. It’s as if the crowded ballroom has melted away.
"Y/N... I want you to stay with me. Don't go back to the island," he whispers as he spins me.
"Chan, I can't. Princess Luciana—"
"Is a good friend, and that’s all she’ll ever be."
I shake my head, my feet pausing. "No... you belong together.....i’m sorry, I shouldn't have come here tonight. Goodbye Chan."
I don't look back. I run all the way to Minho’s room, where he is playing with the animals. Minho frowns the moment he sees me. "I’m assuming things didn't go as planned?"
"No," I huff, scooping Seungmin up into my arms. "I think I should head back to the island soon."
"Wait! Before you leave," Seungmin pipes up, "Hyunjin and I saw a carriage with a rose flag. It’s the same one we found when you were shipwrecked. It could be your family!"
"A rose flag? Hey, Minho, do you know any kingdom with a rose flag?" I ask turning towards him
He pauses to think. "Oh! The Kingdom of Miroh. I’m pretty sure the Duchess was here tonight."
"Do you know if they had a daughter? Long ago?" He shakes his head. "No, As far as I know, they only had a son. Sorry."
Later that night, Chan walks into the greenhouse. He carries a letter for Y/N, asking her to run away with him at dawn. After the engagement party had ended, his father had dropped the news, he was to marry Luciana in two days. He couldn't do it, not when his heart belonged to someone else.
He places the letter on the fountain ledge and walks out, unaware that Jisung, is watching from the shadows.
Jisung creeps out, his tail twitching. He takes the letter and hides it out of sight. Guilt eats at him, but in his mind, anything is better than the thought of Y/N leaving them forever.
Chan waits for hours at the meeting point he wrote in the letter, but when Y/N never shows, he finally gives up, walking back into the palace with a broken heart.
Morning comes quickly. I wake up in the greenhouse to the sound of frantic pecking on the glass.
"Who’s disrupting my beauty sleep?" Hyunjin whines.
I open my eyes, focusing on a tiny green hummingbird hovering outside. I open the window, and she zips in. "Over here, quickly!" she squeaks, flying back toward the royal stables.
I follow her and find the palace pigs knocked out cold. "What happened to them?" I gasp.
"The rats! I saw three rats put something in their food," the bird hums.
I lean down to the troughs. The faint, bitter scent of Sunset Herb lingers in the air. "They used Sunset Herb."
"Sunset Herb?! Why would they use that? It’s dangerous!" Hyunjin gasps, his feathers ruffling in distress.
"Can you help them?" the humming bird asks.
I nod, "I can make a rose tonic. The greenhouse has island roses. I need to find Chan or Minho."
I rush toward the castle, but just as I reach the entrance, the heavy oak doors are slammed shut. "Hello?! I need to get in!" I shout, knocking loudly.
A guard cracks the door open. "I’m sorry, miss, but the King said the Prince is not to be disturbed." He slams the door in my face.
As I turn back toward the stables, the sound of rushing footsteps thunders behind me. "Arrest her!"
I gasp as rough hands grab my arms. "Hey! Get off of me!"
"Island girl, you’re under arrest for infecting the kingdom’s animals with your disease."
"Disease?! No, there’s no disease! I can help, it’s just—" I’m cut off as a hand makes impact with my face. The sting brings instant tears to my eyes.
Hours pass in the cold jail cell. Jisung, Seungmin, and Hyunjin are locked in with me.
"Ugh, this is disgusting. Royalty does not belong in jail!" Hyunjin shouts. A guard approaches the bars. "Food for the prisoners."
I stand up and rush to the iron gates. "Please, let me talk to Prince Chan or Minho! Or even felix! We need to help the animals. If we don't, they’ll die!"
The guard scoffs. "You should’ve thought of that before your animals got them sick."
"But they didn't!" I shout, but he just turns his back. The sound of a bowl clattering makes me spin around. I gasp. "Hyunjin... please tell me you didn't just eat that?"
"Oh, come on. You really think I’d be dumb enough to eat food with Sunset Herb in it?" he mumbles, continuing to munch.
"Do you really want me to answer that?" Seungmin asks.
"I’ll have you know I’m not an idio—" Hyunjin’s body suddenly falls limp to the floor.
"Hyun!" we all yell, surrounding him.
"Hyunjin, if you don't wake up, I swear I’ll eat you!" Jisung threatens, panicking, but the peacock doesn't move.
Meanwhile, Chan and Minho storm into their father’s throne room. "Father!" Minho shouts.
Chan pushes past him. "Is it true? Have you really locked Y/N and her family up?"
"I had no choice," the King hums. Minho scoffs. "It’s not right. Y/N never hurt anyone."
"So, you think I should free her?" the King asks. Chan nods, "Yes, Let her and her animals return to her island. In return... I’ll marry Princess Luciana."
Minho smacks Chan’s shoulder. "You can't be serious! You love her. Don't sacrifice your happiness just because someone doesn't want his kids to be happy." Minho glares at his father.
"Fine," the King says. "I’ll free her. But that means you’re marrying Luciana tomorrow."
"Wake up, island scum. You’re free to go."
The cell door creaks open. I’m still cradling a sleeping Hyunjin. "Wait, please let me go to the greenhouse! Let me save the animals!"
"Shut it," the guard says, pushing me toward the docks.
They shove us onto a boat. "By the time we make it back to the island, Hyunjin will... Y/N, what do we do?!" Jisung panics.
"I’ll figure it out, I promise,if only i was able to speak with the prince..." I whisper.
Jisung bows his head, a guilty look in his eyes as he paws at the wooden floorboards. "Y/N... there’s something I did. Something I shouldn't have. I just don't want you to be mad."
I furrow my brows. "Ji... you can tell me. You know I won't be mad."
"The Prince... he came to the greenhouse. He left a letter saying he wanted you to run away with him. I got scared. I didn't want to lose you."
My eyes soften. "Ji... I would never leave you. Just because I find new people doesn't mean I’ll forget the ones I already have."
Suddenly water turns violent. A storm breaks over us, and the captain smirks as he intentionally maneuvers the sail to knock us overboard.
I gasp for air, fighting to keep myself and Hyunjin afloat. "Jisung! Seungmin!?" They pop up from the waves, gasping. "Help! Help us!!" I shout.
Then, like a miracle, a voice calls out. A rowboat is cutting through the waves toward us.
"A little late for a swim, no?" Minho shouts over the wind. He pulls me and Hyunjin up while Seungmin and Jisung hop in on their own.
"A little," I chuckle as he begins rowing back toward the kingdom.
By the time we reach land, the sun is already up, "We need to hurry if we want to save the animals."
Back at the greenhouse, I frantically mix the rose water tonic. I lift Hyunjin’s head, feeding it into his mouth. "Come on, Hyunjin... wake up."
Slowly, his eyes flutter open. "W-what happened?"
Seungmin smacks him softly. "We told you not to eat that food."
"Ow! Why are you always hitting me?"
"Guys, not the time." I huff, standing up, dusting off my knees.
We rush toward the palace. "Here, take this and feed it to the other animals," I say, handing the tonic to Seungmin and hyunjin.
Suddenly, the hummingbird from before flutters down. "Y/N! It was her! Queen Ariana! I saw her put Sunset Herb in the wedding cake!"
Minho and I share a look before sprinting into the where the wedding is being held.
"Halt! You, The King has strictly forbidden you from entering," a guard exclaims. "Changbin, she’s with me. Let us through," Minho commands.
"But your majesty, the King—"
Minho is interrupted by a roar from Jisung’s chest.
"Yeah... or that," Minho smirks. Changbin nods quickly, stepping aside.
"Jisung, go get the Prince!" I shout. Minho and I head to the garden where the food is set. I walk up to the cake, catching that same bitter scent as before. "She was right, i can smeel the sunset herb. But why? She already had me gone."
"Who knows, but it can't be good."
"What is the meaning of this!" the King bellows as the royal guests exit the palace. Jisung leads Chan over, and my heart leaps when his eyes meet mine.
"Y/N... what are you doing here?"
"I came to save the animals... and to stop Queen Ariana."
The guests gasp. Queen Ariana lets out a sharp laugh. "And what, may I ask, are you stopping me from?"
"From poisoning the guests! I know you put Sunset Herb in the cake!"
She mocks me. "Let me guess, a little birdy told you? Your Majesty, I thought you sent this girl back to her island. Now she’s accusing me of such things?"
"Mother... is that why you told me not to eat anything today?" Luciana asks, dropping her bouquet.
"What? No! Why would I poison the food?"
Chan sighs, cutting a slice of the cake. "If you’re so sure... have a bite."
Hesitantly, Ariana takes the plate. She looks at the King, then Chan, then Luciana. Suddenly, she drops the plate and bolts. Before she can get far, a loud growl stops her in her tracks, Jisung is blocking the exit. She screams, tripping backward into a patch of mud. "You beast! Look what you’ve done!"
"Guards! Arrest Queen Ariana!" Chan shouts, and the sound of foot steps are herd rushing towards us.
"I never liked that woman," Minho smirks, as the guests are escorted put of the palace, and Ariana is still heard screaming in the distance as she's dragged to the dungeons.
As the chaos dies down, the King walks over to me, sighing. "Y/N... I believe I owe you an apology. And to you, Chan. I should never have forced you into this. But... this doesnt mean you can marry y/n, the law states you must marry a princess."
One of the remaining guests, a woman in a green gown, stops in her tracks. "Y/N? Your name is Y/N?"
"Yes... I believe so. It was on my things when I woke up on the island."
"I had a daughter named Y/N," she whispers, walking closer. She begins humming a familiar tune. My eyes widen, and I hum the melody back to her.
"Oh my... Y/N? Is it really you?" She wraps her arms around me, sobbing.
"Mother?" I mumble, holding her tight.
"Queen M/N is Y/N’s mother?" Minho gasps. "Which means... Y/N is a princess."
Chan smiles, watching our reunion from across the garden, already planning his future with her in the back of his head.
