Celine, Outfit Design, and a Kind Horizon - In Defense of Putting That MILF in Hawaiian Shirts
There are a wide range of characteristics that can demonstrate growth in a character. Weight gain to signify stability, aging to demonstrate survival past the worst, monstrosity to show a degradation of character-- changes in the body inevitably reflect changes in a character life, and by extension the story. These changes can also occur in a character's presentation, not just as a reflection of how their circumstances change, but as a window into their mindset. From the infamous 'chop' of hair when a character abandons one viewpoint to embrace another unfettered to in increase in regalia not just as power is gained but embraced, the way that an individual chooses to construct their appearance is a reflection both of how they view themselves and how they want the world to view them. In a medium like animation, every element is a deliberate choice and the laws of plausible construction can be bent-- the sky is the limit. In Kpop Demon Hunters, we see outifts that range from sleeping bags that can be walked in and intricate stage costumes to leather murdersuits and cutely-patterned pajamas.
Celine's wardrobe is no exception, despite having much fewer examples or variances. Pleasantly, the outfits we see in the film can be tied directly to the two viewpoints wardrobe can expose-- the face toward the world, and the view of the self. We see movie-era Celine in two contexts: at work in a paparazzi photoshoot and at the Huntrix Tower, and in the comfort of her own home which includes Miyeong's grave. The former is the face she presents the world-- a professional, if basic, set of button ups and slacks. The latter is the unpolished Celine wearing a tanktop, sweats, and cardigan when the only eyes on her are a young Rumi's and, later, nobody's at all. Additionally, we get a shot of Celine at her most visible as an idol, in which she has a stage outfit that is not only elaborately patterned, but NOTABLY more so than her fellow Sunlight Sisters. These are the Celines we see in the movie, but we are blessed with concept Sunlight Sisters art and have more to work with yet: two elaborate tops matched with a tasseled and... i have no words other than 'fuck ass' belts plus a set of insanely high heels as a sunlight sister, a dark long sleeve-jean combo at an undiscernible time, and another iteration of a tank top and sweats when Rumi was young.
So, as of the movie, Celine has two outfits. Both are boring, and one is almost entirely grey. Comparing them to the other outfits in the film, they almost jump out with their simplicity-- even Bobby, shown in a comparable number of scenes, has a Huntrix t-shirt visible beneath his blazer (which was a genius level merch strat btw. i have that shirt). Even young Rumi in the grave flashback, dressed nearly to match Celine, has color and buttons on her outfit. Celine's clothing is not just boring, but exceptional in its featurelessness. Comparing her professional outfits, previously tied to how she wishes to be viewed by the public, we see her in (possibly the same) black slacks with a navy blue shirt when Rumi was young and a white shirt with iridescent patterning at the time of Huntrix's debut. Professional and put together, but with little needed forethought. The cardigan outfit, previously connected to her view of herself, remains consistent across approximately 20 years in universe.
The outfits we see from her idol era, in which we can presume she is happier with the other Sunlight Sisters present and fulfilling her duty to the Honmoon, her wardrobe is not just as elaborate as other character's clothing, but more elaborate than her bandmates'. The visual representation of her prime includes notable detail and color, where her worst moments-- where she is losing everything and greiving what she has lost-- are all shapeless and grey. In concept arts, there seems to almost be a correlation between how confident she appears and how elaborate her outfit is. Additionally, the one exception to the lack of detail in her movie-era outfits are the iridescent patterns on her sleeves during Huntrix's debut, which in the context of the movie it is known that iridescent patterning demonstrates overcoming tribulation with acceptance-- a potentially significant demonstration of care, given the context of the photo being taken around Huntrix's debut.
Given the pattern visible between the timeline of Celine's life and her wardrobe, it can be concluded that in Celine's design language intricacy equates to wellbeing. However, given the amount of development her character undergoes, it is hardly a stretch to imagine that the style of clothing she wears would not be identical to the styles she wore as an idol in her 20s. We see she favors layered outfits with some form of overshirt-- whether that be a cardigan or button up. Therefore, to demonstrate a Celine that is well after the event of the film where her taste has developed, an intricate overshirt is the ideal choice-- Hawaiian shirts fit the bill perfectly.
So you’ve got this bitch-ass fitted sheet that you would normally pile into a ball and shove into a closet so you won’t have to deal with it, yeah? Well. Quit acting like a piece of linen is better than you are. You can make a fitted sheet bend to your will. And here’s how…
First, put your sheet on the floor. Stand above it for a few seconds so it knows who’s boss.
Then, put your hand in the lower left corner so that it’s inside out. Do the same to the lower right corner.
Now, your lower left and right corners of the fitted sheet should be inside out. (Shoutout to Amy Poehler, love your work).
Then, take the lower left corner (that’s still inside out) and tuck it into the upper left corner. It should look like the picture above once you’re done. Then, do the same with your right corners.
It should look something like that. Right now, she’s your friend at the end of a good night out. Doesn’t look really bad, but you know she deserves better.
Pull at the corners until you get something like this shape, as it makes it easier to fold. You’ve given your friend some plain white bread and a glass of water. She’s looking much more presentable now.
Now, pull in at the elastic until you make a rectangle. You’ll want to tuck and smooth the excess fabric away from the elastic seams and towards the closed edge of the fitted sheet.
Once you’ve got a (semi) neat rectangle, fold the the top of the sheet down about a third of the way through. I like to fold the upper part of the sheet down first, because it’s not as straight of an edge as the bottom. You can find your own meaning within that description.
Now, fold the lower portion of the sheet on top of the part you’ve already folded down.
Fold the left side of the sheet into the middle, and then fold the right side of the sheet on top of what you just folded.
Congratulations. You just made a fitted sheet your bitch.
No but really, this has been the most complete and informative description of how to fold a fitted sheet I’ve ever seen. Very few that I’ve seen show the “bread and water” step.
obsessed w that universe for the placeholder train argument (i know none of this is canon!) (original source) (version w voicing added, unsure on the source for this)
what did zoey mean by "you just won't sing it because *i* wrote the lyrics" what beef did they have? is there a world where maybe rumi and zoey had tension over zoey doing most of the song writing? the implication was also kind of that zoey choreographed takedown- was takedown in particular a song that zoey was really proud of? crazy implications for later. and we know what the takedown choreo could have been and i can see why rumi kept trying to change it... also just implies zoey in particular being rlly against changes which is fun! (for me not her)
also the idea that zoey knew the entire time, point blank, that rumi was lying about the tonics helping her (even, potentially, that zoey specifically set rumi up TO lie knowing that she was taking her to a scam)
the specific "not everything is about your trust issues, mira" laid out (paired with the above about zoey)
ALSO zoey's "oh does that make you feel left out?" to mira, like zoey is the one who always feels left out between rumi and mira maybe?
zoey throwing a shin kal for mira to catch...and the power blast at the end being a combination of mira/zoey doing something together
5 Tiny Writing Tips That Aren’t Talked About Enough (but work for me)
These are some lowkey underrated tips I’ve seen floating around writing communities — the kind that don’t get flashy attention but seriously changed how I write.
1. Put “he/she/they” at the start of the sentence less often.
Try switching up your sentence rhythm. Instead of
“She walked to the window,”
try
“The window creaked open under her touch.”
Keeps it fresh and stops the paragraph from sounding like a checklist.
2. Don’t describe everything — describe what matters.
Instead of listing every detail in a room, pick 2–3 objects that say something.
“A half-drunk mug of tea and a knife on the table”
sets a way stronger tone than
“There was a wooden table, two chairs, and a shelf.”
3. Use beats instead of dialogue tags sometimes.
Instead of:
"I'm fine," she said.
Try:
"I'm fine." She wiped her hands on her skirt.
It helps shows emotion, and movement.
4. Write your first draft like no one will ever read it.
No pressure. No perfection. Just vibes. The point of draft one is to exist. Let it be messy and weird — future you will thank you for at least something to edit.
5. When stuck, ask: “What’s the most fun thing that could happen next?”
Not logical. Not realistic. FUN. It doesn’t have to stay — but chasing excitement can blast through writer’s block and give you ideas you actually want to write.
What’s a tip that unexpectedly helped with your writing? Let me know!! 🍒
