Ok so idk if this seems like super obvious and i just sound kinda stupid but the ending scene of Stormbringer genuinely breaks me

So just to make it clear, I mean specifically the scene where Chuuya's on his way to see his parents, and then turns away because he doesn't think that he needs to.
He says it's because the port mafia are his family now, but it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense for him to work his way up to being an executive, discover where his biological parents live, drive out there and only realise in that exact moment that he doesn't want to see them anymore. By this point it's obvious that he knows he's human, so that also wouldn't make any sense so the only logical conclusion is that he's willingly choosing to cut himself off from any outside influences.
Because he's an executive in this scene, we know that Dazai must have left the mafia at this point, so he's under the impression that Dazai's dead. Whether he sees him as a friend or an enemy or a lover genuinely doesn't matter for this exact moment because he was sort of an outlier in Chuuya's life. Sure he brought him in to the mafia, but he also treats him like a kid, he's one of the only characters that he's seen having actual fun with.
The Flags, practically Chuuya's only real friends in the mafia are dead, Rimbaud is dead, Verlaine is just in a basement ig he's barely any sort of link to Chuuya by this point (I assume..) because he's busy mourning Rimbaud and training others in the mafia, Dazai's gone and Shirase is in London. Chuuya literally has no one else outside of the mafia.
And so him willingly choosing to walk away from a potential link, two people that would most likely love him and be able to show him the 'world of light' that he's been cut off from for literally his entire life, is effectively him just giving in. He might have accepted that he's part of the mafia at this point, but I think that this specific scene is where he gives up all and any hope of ever escaping.
In stormbringer in general, Chuuya's behaviour grosses me out a LOT purely from his entire switch in demeanor. At 15, Chuuya's threatning to kill anyone from the mafia that gets too close, but at 16 he's outright promising to crush anyone that gets in the mafia's way. He's done a full 180 on his world view in ONE YEAR, which just can't be healthy or normal in any way (ill analyse that one day...) and that's almost definitely because his only interactions are within the horrible abusive system that's basically just training him in absolute loyalty no matter how much he's put through by them.
Overall, this scene is just really really horrible I think that's all I'm trying to say with my nonsensical rambling <33
Heyo, self-proclaimed Stormbringer analytic here. How I see it portrayed, Chuuya doesn’t want to “escape” the mafia. He never felt trapped in the first place. Yes he first entered because he sort of had to, but in reality, the sheep would have betrayed Chuuya at any time as they have always been exploiting him for his abilities, which would end up leaving him without a home.
Dazai just sped things up a little, seeing the inevitable, and insured him to have a new family of sorts. Chuuya ends up respecting Mori as a leader and swearing his loyalty to him after his recruitment. Which brings me to the next thing, his switch in his attitude is mainly political in a sense. He wanted to protect the sheep, and the mafia were a threat/enemy to the sheep who he felt obligated to protect, thus the mafia were Chuuya’s enemy by extension. After the sheep’s betrayal, he didn’t really have too many more grudges against the mafia, or personal reasons to resent them at least (besides the ultimate ragebaiter that is Dazai).
The whole parent scene is more subjective and complex I suppose, as that one seems more personal rather than “what side” Chuuya is loyal to.”
But I definitely don’t things Chuuya had “no one”. Keep in mind that while Chuuya is the character with the most information given to us backstory-wise, we still know almost nothing in the grand scheme of things. The events in Stormbringer were like a week, just a week of Chuuya’s life we saw. And Fifteen is even shorter, more like a quick story of a problem and solution than anything. My point here is, we really don’t know all of what Chuuya’s connection is to the mafia, but it is a strong one. A good example would be that Kaji and Hirotsu are drinking buddies.
I don’t think his loyalties to the mafia are as fragile as they seem. The flags after all were supposed to monitor Chuuya and ensure his loyalty, but they only really only saw him as a friend and even defied the mafia for him. So I don’t think Chuuya was brainwashed or trained in that way, he was more loyal and knew what he was getting into from the start.
Who knows, maybe we will get extra scenes or dialogue from the manga?
Thanks for saying this because there's a small (big) chance that I wrote that post at 1am while barely awake and I didn't really put my points across that coherently.
I agree with most of what you're saying but I wasn't trying to suggest that his bonds with the mafia are weak at all, I'm saying that his only relationships are within the mafia, which would lead a traumatised teenager to latch on to them completely understandably. The very way that the mafia works is manipulative in itself for literally everyone involved and while he probably did know what he was getting into, a big part of Chuuya's character is being loyal.
The sheep did betray and use him, but he was generally extremely loyal to them and he's shown full awareness of the awful things that the mafia did, so to suddenly feel willing to protect them with his own life only 1 year after joining just feels like it implies a very unhealthy environment for Chuuya. (no wonder, its the mafia)
