"Hero, you go with Superhero to help rescue-"
"No," Superhero shook their head. "We need as many people fending off the villain attack as possible, my mission can be a one-person job."
"Are you sure?" Head Hero asked, looking up from their clipboard. "It may be helpful to have someone, and you're looking a little pale."
Superhero swallowed, hiding their shaking hands behind their back. "I can handle it." They managed to say firmly, despite their quavering voice. You need as many people as possible."
"Alright, we'll see you soon then, Superhero." Head Hero turned back to the other heroes and began sorting them into groups to deal with the new attack.
Superhero slipped out of the back of the room, taking a few shaky steps down the hallway before collapsing against the wall, sliding down to sit in a heap on the floor.
They were shaking, their breath coming in short, full-body gasps that was loud enough in their head to block out the rushing sound. They had to get up, they had a mission to do, but they found they couldn't move.
This was it, this was the ultimate battle against the villains, and who knew how many would get hurt or injured. Superhero hadn't wanted it to come to this, but it was finally here. They needed to get their mission done and save the mayor as quickly as possible so they could come back and help, but they couldn't.
Frozen like a deer in headlights, all Superhero could do was curl up on the agency's floor, slowly crumpling more into themself as their breathing got worse and their vision got fuzzy. This was a full-blown panic attack, and they were too deep in it to try and calm themself down.
A hand on their shoulder, Superhero jumped. They nearly cried out, but nothing left their mouth as they looked up to see who it was. "Supervillain?!"
"I snuck in before all the fighting started," Supervillain helped them sit against the wall. "Are you okay?"
"Supervillain- I- no-" Superhero pulled them into a hug, holding their partner as close as possible. Supervillain wasted no time in hugging them back, kneeling on the cold tile floor.
"Hey, shhhh, it'll be alright," Supervillain whispered in their ear, gently petting the back of Superhero's head.
"No-" Superhero held them tighter, burying their face in Supervillain's shoulder. "No no no I have to go I won't be able to protect you back here- what if you get hurt- what if they see me protecting you and find out about us- I can't lose you-"
"Hey, hey, hey." Supervillain gently rocked them back and forth, doing anything they could to calm Superhero down. "I'm going to be fine, alright? If anything, I need to be here to protect you. We'll be alright, okay? We can figure this out as we go."
"Okay." Superhero sniffed. Calmed by Supervillain's gentle touch, their soft words, the feeling of their heart beating against Superhero's, the hero let out a breath. "Alright."
Supervillain pulled away, kissing their forehead. "You go save the mayor," they murmured. "I'll be right here waiting and fighting when you get back."
