despite the reputation that folklore enjoyers get, i think taylor’s songwriting is at its best when it is simplistic and direct & she is the best in the business at capturing a feeling in a short phrase. that song writing is also ALL OVER folklore. “but we were something don’t you think so?” is my favorite example of such a simple line that is SO full of emotion. i feel the same way about “i’m still a believer, but i don’t know why.” this kind of songwriting is what she built her career on and i will always go to bat that lyrics like “i’m 13 now and don’t know how my friends can be so mean” or “i just like hanging out with you” or “I just don’t understand how you don’t miss me” or “i was there, i remember it” or “you’re dancing around your room when the night ends” or “don’t make her drop you off around the block, remember that she’s getting older too” are always going to be infinitely better to me than the word salad she comes up with sometimes and calls it “quill pen” writing
