The Curtis’ boys used to go hunting.

Mr. Curtis doesn’t anymore, he’s dead.

Darrel Curtis Jr. can’t anymore, no time to, to much pain, too tired.

Soda Curtis can’t anymore, has to be there, can’t relive those moments without his Dad.

Ponyboy Curtis can’t anymore, he doesn’t like to be called a “hunter”, he can’t kill anything.

After Dallas, they can’t stand a gun.

Holding reminds them of how the cops had to have looked at Dallas, seen him, but still didn’t care.

Aiming it at something alive makes them feel bad. It’s just living its life, trying to survive. It’s not hurting anyone unless it has to.

Shooting it brings back the memories of gun shots, screams, cries, lights, blood.

Seeing the dead animal makes flashes of Dallas’ dead body being carried out, without any remorse come to their eyes.

They don’t want to be the cause of another death that didn’t have to happen, another death of something that’s just trying to live freely.
