I think as a species we kind of have this all or nothing mindset
Either I do all my homework at once the day before the deadline or not at all
Either I get an A in this class or none of the work has value
Either I get this art piece done perfectly the first time or I’m scrapping it
Either I try this skill once and am good at it or I throw in the towel
We kind of think that nothing is worth doing unless we can reap all the benefits, idk I think this kind of mindset has put humans in this perpetual culture of either perfect try or imma just forget about it.
It’s like somehow we’ve completely gotten rid of the importance of the in betweens. The fact that even just working on something you’re not good at can definitely help you in the long wrong. That maybe we don’t have to write our whole papers now, a sentence start is good. Like there is value in just existing and doing things you know.
We feed into this idea that unless we can complete an objectives perfectly, completely, and punctually, we shouldn’t do it.
And people ask “why do students procrastinate? Why can’t we start making healthier decisions? Why is it so hard to get people to do something?”
And idk I think it’s because we’ve taught ourselves there’s no point to taking action unless guaranteed success. We’ve tricked ourselves into thinking no action is better than less than perfect action.
So I guess this is a reminder that you can try things, you can half-ass stuff, you can do things you suck at, you can try little changes in your life and just see how they go.
Idk try to jog and hate it, go to the kids park down the street and ride the swings for the hell of it, give up using straws for a week and see what it’s like, try throwing a football and miserably realize you can’t throw for shit, throw it again just cuz, try painting and spill the water, try growing a plant and realizing it’s less compliant than a starving chihuahua, go to the gym and pretend you know how to use that machine no one actually knows how to use and just bullshit your way through it just cuz, say hi to the janitor, do those things you kinda wanna do but your brain says has no value
You don’t have to be perfect all the time, hell you don’t have to be perfect period. Like honestly why strive for perfection in all you do if all it does is make you sit inside a boring box
