i saw this and was like "ooh i recently learned that they age sharks by counting the growth rings on their vertebrae (like a tree!)". and then i looked up what they do for orcas--they count the growth rings on their teeth.

and then i got sidetracked and started looking up stuff about this newer method (epigenetic clock?) where they get a small tissue sample, then look at the signs of aging in the organism's dna to approximate the organism's age.

they were using fancy terms like "cytosine methylation" which is like... chemical changes to the dna. (and its related to epigenetics, which i remember learning about some point.)

epigenetics is kinda cool. i remember it kinda vaguely, but basically, as a result of certain experiences or environmental conditions, living organisms can have changes to the dna where the dna sequence itself doesnt change, but like... u get some changes to the DNA that cause it to act differently. its weird. like their genes just don't activate in the way they did before. and it can like actually have big effects on the organism. like i remember the teacher guy talking about this Dutch famine in WWII, and the people in utero at the time, when they grew up, they put on weight easier and were at risk of heart problems and stuff. and they still had the same dna from their parents!!!! it just acts differently. its weird

yeah, epigenetics is college level stuff. idk why, but when i was 14, i really did just..... decide to watch an entire college course on youtube?? Thats where i learned about it.

Also--did you know colleges often post their courses publicly? like you can just google "free courses MIT" or "free courses Harvard", and it's just free. (you don't get college credits or anything; you can just learn the material. (i mean some of them offer certificates if you pay like $100? $200? something like that))

i mean, thats maybe less cool if you're in europe. but colleges are expensive asf in america, so i was surprised to learn they just release it all for free.
