i think one of the best parts about being a teenager in the early to mid 2010s was that cigarettes were definitely not cool anymore and vapes hadn’t popularized yet so my lungs made it out of my peak impressionable years relatively unscathed

WIFE LINE LIVES ON BABY!!!!
I actually need everyone to stay tf away from my girl
thank you everyone for staying tf away from my girl <3
Like. Look. Listen. I have taught introductory quantum physics at a university level, and I need you all to incorporate this into your trans advocacy: There are situations where you need to make a decision to prioritize being comprehensible to your target audience above being The Most Unassailably Correct.
You can try to teach a toddler about germ theory or you can get them to wash their hands because "yucky"
Teaching a toddler to wash hands because yucky when the Ethics Understander crashes through the roof. "STOP RIGHT THERE," the Ethics Understander shouts at me. "The disgust response is not a legitimate substitute for a considered value judgment, and in fact, weaponizing disgust instead of grounding those judgments in a more rigorous framework is fundamental to reactionary rhetoric!"
The toddler looks at me. "You are a fascist, auntie. I have seen the light and will now go eat chewing gum from the pavement, unless you can educate me on a rigorous framework on the microbiology of pavement chewing gum this very instant."
This is a hyperbolic example but here's a more real one:
You are trying to explain the trajectory of research on trans issues, and how the informed consent model came about as a wildly successful alternative to the gatekeeping model because time and again, people with clinical experience who actually cared about their patients found that just letting trans people transition was easier and the fear that it would lead to something bad was unfounded.
The Principle Understander is shouting at you that the medicalization of trans people is inherently unjust, and even the informed consent provider is still a gatekeeper, just a more lenient one.
You are already aware of this.
You are talking to someone who, as a first priority, needs to know what the worse gatekeeping model looks like.
The person you're talking to is asking "but isn't it good to give patients more time to think before making irreversible changes?" because they didn't hear the part where you explained that asking patients about their masturbation habits has nothing to do with anyone's safety. They missed it because the Principle Understander was on a tangent about the necessity of abolishing capitalism because paying for medication is bad, which again, yes but this is really not the time or place for that.
This has the funniest name btw.
There's an Emily Dickinson poem about this:
Tell all the truth but tell it slant— Success in Circuit lies Too bright for our infirm Delight The Truth's superb surprise As Lightning to the Children eased With explanation kind The Truth must dazzle gradually Or every man be blind—

Do you know of any arachnids who ventured towards carcinisation?
no because the term "carcinization" was created to describe the tendency for marine decapod crustaceans to convergently evolve crab-like body plans, it was never supposed to be applicable to other animals!
I blame pop science for spreading it around as a funny term that got misunderstood and misapplied basically from that point onward. most other animal groups don't get their own term for this phenomena and carcinization does NOT apply because... these animals aren't evolving into crabs. only decapods do that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(decapods are the marine crustacean group with ten legs- true crabs, lobsters, hermit crabs, robber crabs, mantis shrimp, prawns, slipper lobsters, and all of their infinite assorted relatives in the deep blue sea)
give us back carcinization, bunjy. first warning.
one more word from you and no dessert tonight
There's a post going around Tumblr about how if you're post-menopausal and have bleeding, you should get it checked by your doctor. I brought some minor bleeding I'd had up in a doctor visit earlier this year, prompted by that post, and this week, after a biopsy, I found out I have cancer. It's early stage and the survival odds at 5 years are 99%. I have an oncologist appointment and we may have caught it early enough that surgery alone will be sufficient treatment (no radiation/chemo).
So that post may have saved my life and it may have made my treatment a lot easier too.
If you get into menopause and then start bleeding again, really, get your reproductive innards checked out. The life you save may be your own.
This is also true for anyone who's stopped bleeding from birth control or T and then starts bleeding again. Around year 4 of my Mirena iud I started spotting in a regular schedule like a mini-period, but I absolutely got that checked out. Everything was fine and they figured it was because after a few years there's a lower level of hormones coming from the iud, but still. If you have ovaries/a cervix/a uterus, have stopped menstruating for a period of time, any new bleeding is cause to get that shit checked out!
One like nitpick thing that drives me crazy is when people call Blue Whales the largest whales or the largest living mammals or some shit like that
Because yes that is true. But when you frame it like that you are completely disregarding the absolutely batshit reality that Blue Whales are the largest animals that have ever existed on earth through the entire history of the planet and they are alive right now today

I know the Paradise Fears fandom is basically dead and I'm screaming into a void but I can't wait to annoy the shit out of Cole Andre again.
I should be doing more to appreciate the lack of marvel movies in today's popular culture. I once yearned for marvel movies to have this level of irrelevance. They used to feel almost ozymandian, like an empire that had no beginning and no end. and now tony stark iron man is naught but two vast and trunkless legs of stone.
I was reading Lou Sullivan's 'Information for the Female to Male, crossdresser and transexual' (Which is a very interesting look into the 80's trans space and mindset, I highly recommend. Though be warned it is of the times and uses now outdated terms.)
But every so often he would include little blurbs about historical transmascs/crossdressers, (depending on the story the line is blurred) and this is definitely my favourite. I'd pay to hear these stories.
[Image Description: In 1903 Harry Gorman, employee of the New York Central Railway, “a robust, athletic, heavily-built man-cook of about 40,” was discovered to be a female in a hospital in Buffalo after more than 20 years of passing. Gorman claimed to know “at least ten other women” who passed as men and worked in the same railway company- some as porters, train agents, switchmen, etc. They often met together and “made themselves not a little merry over the success of their transference from one class of humanity to another,” possibly forming the first female-to-male peer support group. #my favorite shore leave theory is that the shore leave factories didn't generate anything for spock not only bc he's sufficiently repressed#but because torn shirt kirk is. right next to him already. honestly shirtless kirk beating up his own old bully while spock watches#is. i think this is spock's kink actually. up there with the 'yes...yes...good...good' voyeuristic reaction to kirk inventing a bazooka#spock watching kirk be righteous and brilliant with as little clothes as possible and spock himself getting to be Correct about everything#is a GREAT day for spock already. who needs wish fulfillment#kirk isn't even interested in the chorus girl sexbots only the simulacrum of his steady gf. & real ruth is out of the picture and no threat#also they got to grab each other multiple times it was basically obscene. AND all this started when kirk only wanted a massage from him.#so 'shore leave' in its entirety is pretty much 10/10 no notes ideal day as far as spock's psyche is concerned w/ no need for extra steps @anghraine tags
