I know most people dunk on Apollo for his haikus, but I think it's very sweet that the patron god of arts doesn't follow the "rules" in art. the point is to express yourself and have fun, not to be "correct"

The way Apollo brings up the the gods watching him during his trials because he watched the spectacle of a quest before too. He knows that constantly being perceived at his most vulnerable. That his worst and most humiliating moments are being broadcasted to his friends and enemies. Like no wonder he was so self-conscious about himself

It took maybe my seventh reread to realize that Apollo’s completely bullshitting here.

He should know who Walt Whitman is. He probably, definitely did prior to becoming mortal. Apollo is having a knee jerk reaction disparaging his work however because he’s not able to cope with the fact that he’s more disconnected with his domains than ever.

The characterization here is really intriguing. Apollo would rather make himself look completely self absorbed in front of Grover and Meg than be vulnerable and admit that he’s losing huge portions of his identity the longer he’s human. As if avoiding talking about it would stop it from happening, or at the very least keep people from worrying about him or pitying him.
