honestly my sympathies to the a81 fans who were here before the show came out and got excited to see the adaptation. i found the podcast after watching the show first, and i feel like it's the inverse experience of what everyone else is complaining about. like i watched a very Alright season of a kinda spooky show and thought "that was pretty decent i wonder if it was from a book or something" and then i found out it's actually one of the best podcasts i've ever listened to. like. oh melody? she's a lesbian and the love between her and her wife is one of the driving forces of the show. Visser? not a building that happens to hold a cult for no reason but a living entity feeding off of the devotion of its host. the otherworld? not just some random alien host world but the City, a world of dreams and horror and beauty and mystery. i feel like i lucked out so hard
If it makes you feel better we had like a year heads up and it did the only thing I was hoping it would accomplish, which was to bring people like you to the podcast

The thing about an archive 81 Netflix adaptation is like, how the fuck are they going to do season 2???? Season 2 of A81 is batshit insane, ur telling me Netflix is going to adapt the weird surreal body horror trip with a funky soundtrack that is season 2 into bright hd for the world to see???
this actually rly confused me after listening to the podcast, because while the show added (and took away 🙄) a lot of stuff, it wouldn't have been that hard for them to use the plot they wrote out and still have Dan end up in the City. They still included the other world element, and the idea that people can become stranded there for long periods of time - why not set it up as more of a solid space like in the podcast and have him rescue Melody but get stuck there himself? they could have broadened the scope of the narrative and given themselves way more to work with in season 2. instead we have (spoilers if anyone cares) Dan stuck in the 1990s, but technically everyone involved is safe. there's no new villain and no more tapes, so Dan is I guess just going to be trying to get home by exploring the ritual more or trying to open the door again, but that feels like kind of just rehashing the plot of s1. idk i'm probably not gonna watch it because like... straight... melody........ but I am so confused but the writing choices that I just can't stop thinking about it
me at my museum job down in the archives listening to tma and archive 81 while I relabel a bunch of 100 year old porcelain dolls: hmm
honestly the fact that season 2 archive 81 managed to make the relationship between capitalist corporations and colonial mindsets so clear is goddamn brilliant. i've seen some folks say that LMG is almost laughably evil in the podcast, which is true, of course, but I think that writing them off as this naturally devious entity does a disservice to what marc and dan were saying with that arc. the idea of consumption is so central to a81, and LMG represents a specific kind of consumption that plagues our society - a greed that we see every day in the exploitation of individuals and our environment by huge companies, which a81 points out has a direct relationship with the colonial mindset. it's all about exploitation, and the main goal of LMG being to literally colonize the City and use its resources is such a chilling reminder that companies in the real world are still doing their best to colonize as much of the planet as they can. i gasped aloud when i realized that this was not only an anti-capitalist narrative, but also an anti-colonialism one - because they're the same story. idk idk if that makes sense I just think LMG gets written off as a kind of lesser antagonist next to the Leviathans, but I think it's actually a narratively perfect representation of one of the central themes and that's very brilliant
