Thanks to the efforts an amazing non-profit organization, nearly 40% of Afghanistan’s skateboarders are female and, according to Skateistan, “100% of those are tough as nails.” A new PBS article on the “skater girls of Afghanistan” tells the story of this incredible school that combines education, skateboarding, and girl empowerment. In a country with few opportunities for girls to participate in sports, Skateistan’s skateboarding program gives its female students a chance to experience the fun and confidence-building benefits of sports. Nearly 47% of the school’s students are girls and it’s now the largest sporting organization in Afghanistan that’s open to girls. Skateistan has been so successful in Kabul that they have opened a second facility in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan and added programs in Cambodia and South Africa.
