I’m using my unofficial status of “old lady on Tumblr” to nag, cajole, beg and mother hen you into REGISTERING TO VOTE!!
It is so important. You can make a difference but please make sure your voice is heard.
I’ve even supplied the link for you.
The election is 33 sleeps away.
Then go and speak with friends/colleagues and people you trust to get information. The choice is yours - please be informed.
Oh - P.s. : Vive le France!
The Worst Witch + ao3tagoftheday, 2/?
There’s this new TV show, Jamestown, about women who were shipped to America to marry the new colonists in 1619. Guardian critic Mark Lawson complained it was somehow ~unrealistic to depict 17th century women having “modern” thoughts like… objecting to rape? And making jokes?
This is so stupid, sexist, and shortsighted, FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS:

don’t tell me, tell me what I feel I’m real and I don’t feel like boys
Mornin’, boys. I’m Annie Edison, people call me “psycho” because I had a nervous breakdown in high school.
uk side of tumblr are u ok
The UK has left Europe. Which means we’ve also left behind all the laws Europe put in place for the protection of LGBT people and a shit ton of other good laws as well. The pound is at its lowest worth since 1985 meaning that thousands will loose their jobs as major companies try to save money by cutting the number of staff they employ, and a loaf of bread will probs cost more than fixing the teeth of everyone who’s ever been on Jezza Kyle ever. So no, we’re not really alright but it’s our own fault tbh.
And now Cameron has stepped down, and believe me I didn’t vote for him and I do not like his policies but compared to the alternatives he is by far the best option. Johnson is a racist, bigoted prick and Gove is a backward, zenophobic dickhead. Now we have financial instability, the collapse of the Prime Minister, the opposition has failed to make any strong statements or take a stand and I am devastated. People will study this day in history books to come and they will shake their heads in disbelief.
So xenophobia won.
I can’t believe I live in a country where people would be so narrow minded, so inward focused that they believed the racist, zenophobic rhetoric that’s led to this. Immigration won’t fall, we can’t do anything about it while we remain in the European trade market; that £350 million won’t go to the NHS; the value of the pound is falling. The EU, the world’s greatest peace project in a war torn continent, is going to fall apart and I don’t feel British at all.
Tumblr tends to be very America-centric so can we just turn our eyes for a minute to the UK
Specifically to this woman.
Earlier today, Jo Cox, a Labour MP in Northern England, was stabbed and shot at an event in a library.
It has just been confirmed that she has died due to the attack.
She was a great campaigner and humanitarian, and has left behind a husband and two children.
This kind of event happens rarely in the UK, and so this is terrifying and destabilising that such a horrific thing has happened to such a compassionate person.
Can thoughts on Tumblr turn to the UK today please, and turn to remember a woman who has been brutally murdered after a lifetime of trying to build a better country.
Guys, I’m begging you to reblog this Jo Cox was a representative, and she was shot while meeting with her constituents. She has been very vocally advocating for Syrian refugees to enter Britain, and was shot by a man who allegedly shouted “Britain first” several times. She died within an hour. <b>Please give her death and life the attention it deserves.
Such a wonderful person. May they be remembered for their incredible determination and kindness.
This has shaken me more than any of the other awful pieces of news recently. I don’t understand how this happened. And I don’t know what to do now. This just doesn’t happen here, except now it does, and I don’t know how to live in a country where it does. In a week we go to the polls. The bloody, bloody referendum being held for no reason other than political pandering has escalated to this level of vitriol, of hatred.
THIS is what happens when you tar all immigrants with the same brush for political shorthand. THIS is what happens when you publish unending threats about the evil, evil EU. THIS is what happens when you tell people that it’s not their fault they don’t have a job, and it’s not the Government’s fault, it’s that man down the street from Poland - and you should go get him.
An innocent and brilliant women died for her political beliefs and I suddenly don’t recognise my country anymore.
How English has changed in the past 1000 years.

JSTOR gothic
you open a tab on JSTOR to begin research for a paper. you leave momentarily for a cup of tea; when you return, there are two more tabs that you do not remember opening. you look away to find your notes, and when you look back, there are five more tabs. eventually, there are thirty tags open in your browser. you can no longer access any site other than JSTOR. somehow, this does not seem strange to you.
an article pops up in your search that, while interesting, does not seem to relate much to your research topic. still, you read it anyway out of curiosity. it cites several other articles that are also on JSTOR, and you decide to read them too. each article brings several others with it. suddenly you are an academic theseus, winding your way through the labyrinth of citations, but you have forgotten the thread that should have led you safely back. it is two in the morning and you are reading about foraging behaviors in south american flamingo. you are a shakespearean scholar. your eyes cry out for sleep, but you cannot stop reading.
you are scrolling through the pages of articles to find what you need. eventually you notice that you have seen several of these article titles before. confused, you click to the next page of articles and scroll more slowly. it is exactly the same as the last page. another attempt yields the same result. no matter how far you go, you make no progress and find no new articles. you keep scrolling.
you have been reading so long that you find you can no longer form a sentence without using “nevertheless,” “reminiscent,” or “quintessential.” you also find yourself occasionally slipping between popular academic languages. it has finally happened: you have become academia. your friends and family can no longer understand you, but you can at least read all of the literature in your field. you figure it is a fair trade.
you pull up JSTOR to search for an article, but before you can type in your search, JSTOR pulls up exactly what you need. you are wary, but you try to read the article. JSTOR flips to the page that contains the exact information you needed for your argument. alarmed, you realize with horror what is going on. you are no longer reading on JSTOR. JSTOR is reading you.
