    “ you are sure ? ” the blonde questioned, noticing he wasn’t drinking any wine just like her. a rather refreshing realization since everyone surrounding them seemed to be in a drunken state or at the least boderline. “ that’s unfortunate. although, truth be told, i believe the pastries are much more enjoyable than any of the wine here. “

“yes, thank you.” he said with a nod of his head. duty was the most important thing in his life. and he wasn’t going to throw it away because of a drunken mistake. “yes i’ve heard the pastries are something to taste. would you like to accompany me to grab a few?” it was a risky question, a bastard asking a high born lady? unheard of.

there were so many NEW faces , new guests to meet tonight  ;  more than the ones she already knew. it was both distressing  & &  comforting to see the north so populated for once. a pleasant smile was flashed in the squire’s direction.  ‘  i’m glad.  ’  there was a delicate … look to the man that she swore should’ve belonged to a lord         but his clothes spoke otherwise.  ‘  are you new to WINTERFELL ? ?  ’

dominic’s head turned to the direction of the voice- a little surprised. he didn’t think that she would initiate a conversation. from her clothes, dominic could tell she was of noble birth and he doesn’t really expect any high born ladies to initiate conversations with him, a bastard.  “um no my lady, i have been once before with lord tommen.”

a silent chuckle escaped his lips. like tommen, myrcell was just as funny when drunk. “lets get on with it then?” it has always been one of dominic’s wishes to dance with a noble lady. one that he never thought would come true. him- a bastard, dancing with a noble lady? if he was told that when he was younger, he wouldn’t have believed it for a second. .

growing up near the lady myrcella, he knew her traits. and he knew that lady didn’t truly mean it but still there was a chance that she could have and he definitely  did not what to upset his lord’s family. he knew how close tommen was with his sister, he definitely, definitely did not what to upset his lord’s sister. “as you wish my lady.” he said with a small bow, with an outstretch of his hand. “though i must admit, i am not gifted with a talent for dancing.”

    ─ “tommen?” she had thought him to be some distant lannister cousin, come to the north with the other baratheon tropes to muscle up support for the visiting nobles. she had not thought him to refer to tommen as ‘lord’, however. dropping into a curtsy in return, she offered her companion a smile. “you are his squire?” was tommen old enough to have a squire? it had been so long since she’d last seen him. “well, as his cousin, i am here to relieve you of your duty, ser. just a cup. i know he’ll feel bad if you weren’t allowed to enjoy yourself.”

at the word ‘cousin’ dominic instantly bowed. “forgive me my lady, i did not know you were lord tommen’s cousin.” tommen had told stories of shireen but dominic had never really seen his cousin until now. a flush of red -an obvious sign of embarrassment- coloured his cheeks. he has never felt so embarrassed. how could you dominic, your lord’s family! “truly my lady i must not. however i could pour you another wine? maybe grab you some cakes?”

“OH PLEASE dominic, stop making me laugh.” he let out a wholehearted chuckle. if tommen was sober he wouldn’t be laughing this much but SOBER TOMMEN still thought that dominic took his career way TOO SERIOUSLY. though he was grateful, sometimes he couldn’t get rid of the guilt. “come on, grab a goblet, don’t make me feel bad.” 

out of the order of his lord, dominic took a goblet and took a tiny sip of the wine. he couldn’t help but continue to finish the glass. he instantly put it down, afraid he’ll let tommen down if he couldn’t perform his duties as best as he could. lady cersei would definitely be angry. “though you my lord, i am having fun. therefore, how many fun you have tonight is shared with me, so you needn’t worry.”

    ─ “truly?” perhaps she had indulged in a cup ( or three ) of the sweet dornish wines that her men had hauled in from her ship. she had such a fondness for the wine above others and it wouldn’t be ladylike for her to ask for a strong mug of ale. “who is your duty to, good ser? i will be sure to let your lord know you’ve done a wonderful job so far.”

“lord tommen my lady.” he said a small bow. he was always bowing. bowing to his noble lord, bowing to his noble lady. bowing to this merchant, bowing to this maester. perhaps it was because he was a bastard and as a bastard he felt extremely inferior to those around him.

TOMMEN LAUGHED. his squire was so dutiful and at times it was funny. tommen with a little bit of wine in his system found it funnier tonight. “you are ridiculously funny dominic.” he said before pouring himself some more wine. “please do me a favour and have fun?” he said to his squire before letting the wine intoxicate his body. 

“i am having fun looking after you my lord.” when to be honest, he had a mere idea of what fun was. when he was a kid fun was having three meals a day and surviving a storm. duty never ends. he repeated in his head. he didn’t have anything better to do, it’d be a surprise if any lady wanted to dance with a bastard.

         “ squire to the son of a lannister ?   how ironic.    you could almost be the young baratheon lord himself, so someone who’s only ever heard description of him, ”  domas shook his hands,  “ but, if i’m not mistaken - STORM is a bastard name, is it not ?    how does a bastard end up the squire of a noble lord of the richest two houses in westeros ? ”

at times, waves of jealousy would fill the storm boy whenever he saw tommen. all his life tommen and the rest of the baratheon-lannisters had grown up with everything within their reach. good food, good clothing, good shelter. something that he never had growing up. he pulled his hand back behind his back after and smiled- the story was a sweet one. “lord tommen is a kind man. it was during one of the hardest storms the stormlands had ever seen. the people who orphaned me, they were gone before their time. so i was there in the streets, a boy of ten, about to freeze to death and i suddenly i felt this heavy, warm cloth, i looked up and tommen was there. i owe my life to him.” he took a breath, his mind going back to that bad but all the while the best winter before he took a seat beside the other. “and waters, a bastard name as well. what brings you to winterfell?”

“It was very necessary.” He had to taste them. Perhaps she was biased, for she had eaten those since she was a little girl and it brought her lovely childhood memories, but there were no better cakes in all the north. Maybe even Westeros. Not even Sansa’s beloved lemon cakes. Cheerful laughter bubbled from her lips, clear joy in her eyes and she did as told and grabbed a cake. “I told you! Better keep this plate close to us before someone sees us and decide to try one. I normally don’t share but I’m willing to make an exception for you.” It was a jest, for Arya did not mind sharing. “You know my name, but I don’t know yours.” She had seen him around with Tommen Baratheon, and that was all she knew about the young man.

he was starting to like the little stark lady. there was something different about her. so young and carefree, if he ever had a sister, he pictured her to be like arya stark. he had never tasted a cake so good. being part of the smallfolk in the stormlands, there was never any food. if his family was lucky they would have three meals in one day. most of the time it was just two, during the worst of the winters, it was just one. bread and leafy green vegetables and water from a dirty clay cup. it still took a while for the storm boy to get used to the fancy clothes, fancy food, fancy cutlery, fancy furniture, fancy everything. the noble families are too lucky. was a sentence that continued to enter his mind when he saw the extravagance of objects that the noble lords and ladies had. he laughed at all that arya said, she was good company. “dominic storm.” it felt weird not saying my lady at the end of the introduction. “squire to tommen baratheon.”

“no- thank you.” his hand facing the offerer. he had made a promise to himself that he would not drink. he was here for tommen, not for himself. if anything happened to the boy because of dominic’s drunkenness, he wouldn’t be able to live with the guilt.  “i am here solely for duty.”

              “ i would not assume to present myself to the lady of house stark without being asked to do so,    but if there is a chance then of course i will extend my gratitude, ”   he nodded to the younger of the two, and found himself chuckling,      “ you could all but pass yourself off as a lannister of casterly rockwith that hair  ━   but i see no sigil.     and a lannister always wears their gold proudly, do they not ? ”  he raised a thick eyebrow and took a swig of his beverage.    “ kissed by gold, some call it ━ the bravosi, i think.   but that does not matter,” he offered his hand to the youth,   “ domas waters, of kings landing.  ”

he nodded his head as a sign of understanding towards the man in front of him. he wasn’t one to speak for the kind lady of the north but he knew she would appreciate it. he was caught off guard with the comment about the hair. though it was common for many people to mention his lannister gold hair, it stil always surprised him. it gave him some gladness that he could pass as a lannister. a member of a great house. that was the dream. he brought his hand from behind his back to connect with the older’s. “dominic storm. squire to tommen baratheon. pleasure to meet you domas.”

              “ if i had known that the northern houses held feasts like this, i’d have come a long time ago. ”   he grinned, half-drunk on the wine they had shared out in generous flagons,   “ i must remember to return to my room at the inn - or simply sleep where i FALL.  we shall see. ”

“yes-” he agreed with the other man, his head making a small nodding action, his slightly long blonde hair following the action. most people had said his hair was too pretty for him. his hair was too pretty for a bastard. it was golden and it shimmered in the sun. some had even thought he was a lannister. hair as gold as that- he could be a lannister. but by his surname, he knew he wasn’t. storm. natural son of some noble lord in the storm lands that occasionally made his life easier. occasionally. “-perhaps a personal thank you to lady catelyn is needed.”

Her smile vanished at his words and confusion adorned her features. Had her words sounded like an order? She hadn’t meant such thing! It had been more like a suggestion, inviting him to try them himself. “No! I can get them myself.” He was their guest after all, and she was not going to make him serve her. “I’m Arya, not lady,” she told him stubbornly. If she had to be honest, she had lost count of how many times she had been called ‘my lady’ in the past few days – it did not make her happy. “I will get them for you.” And before he could stop her, she made it to the table and grabbed a plate. She returned with a smile playing on her lips and took an empty seat next to him. “Come on, eat one! You won’t regret it.”

before he could protest the stark girl had already dashed off to get the food. though he knew that it was not an order, dominic’s dutiful persona could not be switched off. as he watched the trail of brown hair to the food, dominic couldn’t help but feel guilty. he was not high born and she was not low born, the opposites in fact and it wasn’t right that a noble lady would serve a peasant. he sat there, waiting for her, guilt slowly eating him up. his pointed finger nervously tapping the wooden table up and down. he bit his lip as he thought. apologise immediately. his mind spiralled into the worst scenarios. what if he lost his job? what if from someone else’s perspective it looks like he was ordering her? what if tommen looks down on him? the plate landed in front of him and he gave the little lady a smile. “thank you my’- arya, but this was not necessary. but thank you, again.” he hastily apologised before taking a bite of the food. “oh this is wonderful. too good not to be shared. please, arya, have some too.”

The great hall was buzzing with music and laughter – it was true that Winterfell had never been more alive. Arya tugged at her sleeve in an a n x i o u s manner as she walked into the room, feeling the weight of the gown slowing her down.  She appreciated Sansa’s help to get ready, but the elegant hair and the beautiful dress wasn’t her. Giving a good impression had never been one of her priorities, she simply w i s h e d for a good night with her friends and family. She reached for a goblet of wine and smiled at the person next to the table. “I heard there are apple and cheese cakes. Those are my favorite.”

he placed a smile on his lips for the start and most likely the rest of the night. occasionally he’d glance at tommen, checking if he was of need of anything. he was his squire. but tommen like the kind boy he is, had let dominic to enjoy his time at the party. though dominic was never one for the celebrations, he was grateful for the freedom. dominic had taken a place at one of the wooden tables. watching people dance and laugh. it was nice to see so much happiness in one place. as a bastard he’s never had much happiness and even less being orphaned by a smallfolk man and woman. but he grateful. he wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for them. the joy bursted out of everyone and it was an infectious thing. “would you like me to get them for you my lady?” dominic asked, already standing up and waiting for the answer.  if he ever had a house, his words would be ‘duty never ends.’

T A L I A   had stepped foot in the keep many times before …  y e t  ,  it had never been this lively.  people bumped into each other  continuously , issuing a quick apology before going on their way. the food was evenly distributed           it seemed like the cold barely bothered anyone with the mead in their belly.  the music was a soothing tune to her ears , her fingers wrapped around a goblet , the red liquid of  W I N E  faded in the background.   it was a favorable night.  she had taken a spot away from the crowd  ,  lips attached to the metal of the cup , allowing the wine to find entrance , the burning in her throat soothing.   ‘   - SORRY , am i in your way ? ?   ’

dominic was never one for celebrations. partly because he never had anything to celebrate for. when he was young on his nameday, his ‘parents’ would give him three meals instead of two. another year of survival in the storm lands. he was lucky. they were part of the small folk- the lowliest people in westeros. the people that orphaned him didn’t even have surnames. and as he grew up he realised, he was lucky to be a bastard. he was lucky enough to be a squire for tommen baratheon. blue eyes scanned the keep, so much happiness and so much people, it had made the keep look tiny. dom was slowly pushed back and he wasn’t bothered. he stood away from the crowd, watching the scene from a distant. his head snapped to the direction of the voice. he had thought he was alone. “no my lady.” he said with a small bow.
