Heaven’s Gate mass suicide

On March 26, 1997, police discovered the bodies of 39 members of the religious group Heaven’s Gate who had participated in a mass suicide in order to reach what they believed was an extraterrestrial spacecraft. Over the period of 3 days they all dressed in matching outfits, had the same amount of money in their pockets and drank a lethal mixture of Phenobarbital and vodka. They then tied plastic bags over their heads and laid down to die. It’s believed they did this in 3 groups; so the ones who were still alive could clean up after the others. A total of 39 people died that week inside a large white mansion that they had rented in San Diego, California; all believing their souls were headed to space.
