Masculine and feminine are over. Its just The Urge now. The desire. The torment.
everyone should thank me because as bad as i am, i am holding myself back from being much worse
I like how one of the persistent themes in To Your Eternity is the emphasis on autonomy. At first I just noticed it on the surface level. How often characters emphasize that it's their life and their decisions, good or or bad, to make. But as I was typing this I realized it's at the core of every character's arc.
One reason why most narratives don't feature large amounts of major character deaths is that it ends the arc of the character before the story is over. There's no more growth to be had and it's incredibly difficult to make death, especially an abrupt one, feel satisfying when an arc is never realized. This lack of completion can be and is used to show how tragic a premature ending is. But it's much rarer to see character deaths, especially major ones, as the realization of the arc. At least done well (looking at you "redemptive herioc sacrifice").
But continues character death is To Your Eternity's whole thing. You know it's coming and it's going to rip your heart out when it does, but it always feels right (as in that it fits the story). It's obvious these characters deaths are tragic. But even though their lives are cut short, their arcs are not.
Each leadup to a characters death, autonomy is a central focus. That they're whole persons, capable of making their own decisions about their lives. This is shown frequently by the characters that love them trying to override that right because "it's what's best for them". Their deaths are inevitable in the sense that death is for everyone, but within the narrative itself it's clear that what led to them dying in that exact moment was their own choices. They're always given an option to turn around, to hold back. And then they choose to push forward anyways. The situations surrounding their deaths are a culmination of events that might have been out of their hands, but the final moments before are always firmly in their own grasp. And in doing so they complete their own personal arc.
To Your Eternity is obsessed with growth and what it means. It's Fushi's central motivation. And the question of how do humans achieve it themselves, is asked constantly. How do we grow into fully realized human beings? And what does that look like? To Your Eternity seems to say that the realization of your autonomy and the responsibilities that this entails is a core part to this.
can you believe that the most human trait there is is art? we didn't start making art because it was needed for our survival or it helped us mate or hunt…. we make art for the sake of making it and for you and other people to enjoy it. this is why I love literature and art museums or just looking through my old sketches and stories…. making art is what it means to be human I think.
I lived and worked in a lighthouse at a previous job. There was a thick line painted in a circle around the shack where the fog signal was kept. The line represented how close you could get to the fog signal without experiencing physical harm in the form of eardrums shattering or worse.
Even in the house it was LOUD. Probably the loudest thing I have ever experienced but at a normal, predictable interval. You would begin to time your sentences with little pauses with the rest of the lighthouse crew so you would talk like this while making your………..HORN…………. tea and then carry on talking because you knew when it would go off. It rattled the walls and the dishes in our cabinet.
At least one girl had died there. They kept photos of her everywhere “in honor of her sacrifice” because she had decided to take the winter watch alone and died in a storm where bounders the size of mini vans had been lifted out of the ocean and left scattered across the island, to say nothing of the ice chunks. People weren’t allowed to be alone on the watch after that.
One day a dead moose washed up on shore and it took my entire crew all day but we managed to rig up a line to hang it up to dry because we thought having a moose skeleton in the house would really spice the living room up a bit. It did. Weird shit happens when six of you are left alone, like ALONE ALONE, no cell reception, no wifi, just a radio to contact the real world and not a lot of reason to do that. People don’t go on lighthouse jobs if they want to stay connected, I’ve found.
That said Id do it all again, I really do treasure those days
you know you could’ve just said “no they don’t have wifi” and that would’ve answered the question
But then you wouldnt have known about the moose
