I really admire your grasp in composition. It really shows how much thought you put into the characters backstory and trying to capture the story themes thru illustrations!

Do you have any advice for someone who's bad at composition? Did you ever do exercises to get good at it?

hello!! i got ur other ask on this topic, but i've been thinking about how to answer haha... composition is a really involved subject....... i started writing but got worried about yapping too much and then got busy :') i talked before about composition here, here and here, + check out these artists' super good threads on layouts and pose/silhouette!

you can learn a lot by yourself just by being interrogative with the works you encounter. try tracing over the silhouettes or lines of action in drawings you like and observing how the artist fit them together, then think about why the artist might have made those compositional & technical choices - what does it *do* to the image? what function did this blocking/pose/line/color palette serve?

the composition triangle to me is: STORY (symbolism, meaning, storytelling conveyed the image itself, (implied) action), MOOD (the atmosphere, emotion and expressions), and LEGIBILITY (how the eye is drawn through the image). each point on the triangle affects the other parts, and your technical choices support all three. think about what you want to convey, how you want to draw attention to it, and then use tools like contrast to guide the viewer there

i can try to do post-ops on some draws if there's interest/time permits (ahhhhhhhhhhh) but i hope this helps get u started

How do you draw eyes that looks and harmonizes well with the face? Whenever I try to draw the face the eyes always look odd or bug eyed and not in a good way. Kinda like an uncanny valley effect? But the drawings you make have the faces look really pleasing to look at. I can’t tell if it’s the proportions or spacing is the issue that I am struggling to grasp

first, taco1704's anatomy notes: eye spacing, spacing in profile, eye shape in angles (highly recommend browsing their media tab and/or getting their books, tons of really helpful anatomy diagrams!!)

personal notes:

even subtle changes to the dimensions of the eyes can really change how the face looks. you can still draw big eyes if that's the style you like, just try experimenting with the proportion relative to the sides of the face, nose, and mouth. and keep in mind the planes of the face to avoid the "2d stickers on a 3d shape" feel. good luck!!

no plans to reopen, sorry! unless something catastrophic happens at my normal job, i guess. if i ever open a vgen you'll know my situation has suddenly become Dire

AHHH YOUR ARTWORKS ARE SO YUMMY!! could I ask if you associate your art with songs if music? if so or not, what are some of your song reccomendations? :3

sometimes my drawings vibe with a particular song, but it's kinda incidental rather than intentional... like, i listened to yoasobi's "yoru ni kakeru" a lot while drawing "bad ending" xiaoven AU lol

i don't listen to music a lot a lot so my taste is very. uneducated.....?? i don't know if i have recommendations... my favorite artist is nujabes but i mostly put video game osts on (ff9, ff14, UT/DR, sea of stars!) when i'm busy. u should listen to "it's pizza time!" from pizza tower if u ever need to lock in in a really frantic way HAHA

Do you post your speedpaints anywhere?

i've posted like 3 timelapses on here in response to other asks, but that's about it. i usually don't remember to turn on the record canvas thing in csp, sorry... BUT!!! i did record ashveil (it starts at the coloring part bc i sketched in a diff canvas and pasted it into a new one) (this represents like 20 hours of pain.... coloring is hard when ur god's slowest drawer.........)

omg I finally found someone else who uses ciro pen ok I love the way it lines and colors but it won't!! stop leaving this blob at the ends of my pen strokes!! and the blob changes a little when the stroke ends!! did you change your settings on ciro to stop it from doing the shape shifting blob or are you just goated like that and don't struggle with it

i use the default settings and simply embraces the blobs

you can control the blobby worm-ness a bit by how much pressure + velocity you exert. i do clean up lines as i go but i try to not overwork it bc the line variance with the brush feels nicer than making it Perfect

i recorded drawing the lineart for that Sunday pic as a demo! (it's not sped up, sorry... idk how to do that w/ a screen recording)

if u don't mind me asking what brushes did u use for your ashveil piece ^^ he's so pretty

99% ciro pen for lines + color + render, filed in a few spots with the default noise brush, flat texture and cross-hatching blur. see here for samples and the CSP ids!

ashveil IS really pretty........... since i've been orvn-ing for months i haven't gotten to draw long hair too much lately, so rendering peepaw's mane was a lot of fun hehe

I can hear Mondstadters bickering about what the "real" windblume is already. hehe! In legend, there was a nameless flower whose roots grew ever stronger when struck by howling gales. Thus did this "windblume" become code among Mondstadt's first revolutionaries: the embodiment of their strength, courage, & dreams enduring.

Sometimes I wish to tell them the same secret I have shared with you… that there are as many windblumes in the world as people, and no single flower.
