beat the champ is truly such a wild concept for an album like the core subject matter is Professional Wrestling but because it’s the mountain goats ofc part of it is “really more about death and difficult-to-navigate interior spaces than wrestling” (john darnielle’s own words), and even with a topic that may not seem very serious at first glance it only has one not serious song and all the others cover such a wide range of emotions well it’s great
