Hot Shop 8/10
cheeky peek at the process.
Hot Shop 8/10
Hot sculpted stem experiment- turned out less of a vessel stem and more of a candlestick, but I'm still thrilled with it.
This was attempt 2, attempt 1 died when I got too complacent and neglected the moile. Living and learning!
Glass experiences I had in Tasmania
In Hobart: At Salamanca Markets- lots and lots of lampwork EVERYWHERE!!! Also visited Wooby Gallery run by Ruth Allen- one day before I heard of her Glass Futures exhibition.
During a morning in Richmond town we visited an antiques display with heaps of Murano and Art Glass. I kept seeing this particular pink.
In Launceston: when we checked into out hotel I noticed these odd panes in the windows, with unworked punty marks and all. I had never seen this before but my friend explained to me that they're very common in the uk in places like old pubs as they are offcuts of the pane making process. You learn something new every day
I also made my friend drive us up to Poatina Arts Studio to check out the hot shop and facilities. We spent a bit of time exploring the town- it was unlike anywhere I've been. It was built in the 1950s around a Hydro scheme, then bought by Fusion Australia- it wasn't at all like the old-timey touristy Tasmanian towns that we passed so many of during our trip. Luckily I arrived a few days after the furnace was turned off and Keith Dougall had left for a holiday but I was lucky Rose Hamilton was generous enough to show me around and answer my questions.
Somewhere- passed another knick-knacks joint with this assortment of glass fruit- the Murano pieces priced sky high above the rest. It also had an impressive collection of uranium glass and cut crystal.
MONA-
Randy Polumbo: Grotto for MONA, 2017 https://www.polumbo.com/grotto-for-mona
Stuff from wednesday. Made long skinny cups, rob demoed a wide low walled cup.
Tried to make some swirly stems but it's SOO HARD!!! Especially to get everything on centre. I tried three times each more successful than the last.
Process shots yeah... By Abi
All this stemwork has me craving to make something really amorphous and textural. I also really want to hop in the cold shop. And the kiln room. Gah I wish I had time to do everything in the world...
Fruits of Monday- a few first tries.
First attempt at overlaying colour - didn't get very far down the bubble. Plus, it ended up too big with three layers of glass on it so I think I'll stick to waxing my jacks to hell and coping
Don't ask what I was trying to to with that failed stem- one day I'll look back and laugh
Last week's cups + sandblasting tests. Feels like it could almost stand on its own as an artwork.
tried to take some photos of work that hadn't been properly photographed before. definitely needs some editing ...
Notes from week 7! Astrid taught me blown foot and I promised to show her my failsafe punty method. Rob demoed optic mould stem in class.
Friday 19/09
Colour tests, surviving goblet, stem test. Came out of the annealer today but I didn't get a chance to sandblast the colours. I wonder how the sandblast is affected by going back in the hotbox and glory hole
Made another two cups so now I have two in each colour ! Yay!
Thur 18/09
Making colour cups! I made 4 today, two orange and one grey and blue.
I just picked them up using collar method, and they were very sticky (which felt really strange) when I was opening up the cups- perhaps I'll really have to get into overlaying.
Wed 17/09
Some failed stems, I was trying to use stamp foot and it was just too heavy and both cracked.
Tried to just flatten the bottom of the stem with a paddle, resulted in a very small base. When I picked up the cup from the hot box it cracked immediately but Astrid showed me heating it and blowing into it and it melted back together. That's when I leaned to crank up the pickup box before picking up something thin. But it survived!
Beautiful stem I made in class with a blown foot. DIED. Learned too late that to knock off from a blown foot you just tap it, no torching the moil or water involved.
Also tested my colour just with bubbles, no overlay.
Some random stem experiments from monday

MY COLOUR CAME!!!! I didn't get to blow with it today because it came too late. It was also very broken but no real harm done. My phone and Abi's phone were both having a hard time balancing all the colours to take an accurate photo.... Just know I'm really happy and can't wait to try them
