Alex was quiet a moment, licking his lips.  “I’m not asking you to measure up. I love you for who you are. Not who I am, and Evalyn has nothing to do with this.”

“She has everything to do with this, Alex! With us. If we are—Cause you and I: we measure everything we have by what we’ve lost.”

Alex sighed at that, shaking his head as he sat down on the couch in the cabin.  “You may measure what you have by what you lost. I measure who I am by what I’ve lost. I have you and I love you and I will show you that love as long as I can and be as good to you as I can because I know the pain I will feel when I lose you.”

“When.” Caroline repeated coldly, staring back at him with a demand for more. “You say when.”

“I do, because I lose everyone,” he sighed, the pain in his voice obvious. “I have watched so many die, because I can’t do the same. As you know, I’ve tried.”
