Important pigeon update: they are very cute.

I had to do some name changes to make things make more sense. The two I thought I'd call Sam and Frodo need a bit of a change because actually they're not always good with each other (and I don't think they're a couple). So now this one is Sam because he follows me around. When I'm in the bedroom he's on the roof. When I'm at my desk he's on the balcony next to me.

This one is now Gimli. Sam and Gimli are quite hard to spot the differences - the clue is in the primary wing feathers. Sam has little light patches while Gimli's are more a shade of brown.

I also had to rename them because a newbie showed up, and happens to be bearing the one ring so obviously this is Frodo now.

Also I finally got a video of Gimli eating from my hand.

Guys I realised I haven't told you about my pigeons. Do you wanna hear about my pigeons? Of course you do!

It all started with us getting a little bird feeder for the little birds - which they loved of course. But it didn't take long until word got around and the pigeons tried to have a go. That went exactly how you would expect...

This one I decided to call Pippin because quite frankly all she seems to think about is when the next meal will be. And I love her for that.

Later I realised she was actually the partner of another pigeon we'd been seeing a lot, who we originally called Matilda, then realised she's more likely a Matthias, but given the partnership, he needed to be Merry. So that's how Merry and Pippin came to be. And look at HOW FRIGGIN CUTE they are.

I often find them standing on the roof outside our attic window. Is that because I sometimes feed them from that window? Nobody can be sure.

Merry actually only has one foot, but honestly he seems to be thriving. He's very bossy and whenever there's snacks available he will boss everyone out of the way. I think I actually remember seeing him before when his foot looked very infected and now it's just gone. Which is quite horrible to think about, but I'm glad he's managing without it. He does try to scratch himself sometimes and seems to forget that he doesn't have the foot to scratch with, but then also can't scratch on the other side with the other foot either because he doesn't have the other one to stand on. And that's sad, I wanna give him lil skritches but we're not there yet.

At some point it started to turn into a bit of a gang. I brought this on myself really by offering them what is probably the best food in town (a mix of millet, oats, flax seeds, sunflower seeds and lentils). But they come and go.

Today I've been getting to know this new couple who I don't recognise, but they are exceptionally bold. This one pictured above actually ate out of my hand, they're the first of all of them to do that. We have a little water dish on the balcony too and they come down for that, but normally fly away when I come out to freshen it up. But this one hangs around. And so for their boldness and bravery, I called them Samwise, and the other who I think might be their partner is Frodo (of course).

when i was a teenager i used to catch myself thinking "i'm really glad i'm alive right now because of all the cool personal technologies that exist" and when i did i'd think it through and reckon that well, its not like teenagers in the 70s and 80s knew they didnt have ipods or facebook or whatever. they were also happy with the tech they had. and i'd reason that in the future there would be more fun technologies that i dont know i'm missing out on right now and the future will be an even cooler time to exist

anyway i was dead fucking wrong about that last part. i hate personal technologies now. i miss having an ipod that doesnt advertise shit to me and i miss when my htc wildfire didnt harass me 45 times a day to install an ai assistant and then install it anyway when i say no and i miss when the internet wasnt 5 websites all of which i have to log into and i miss when i didnt need an app to talk to my landlord. sorry past me you were actually right about 2009
