this is the most evil thing i’ve ever seen
Every single time I post about Pink Diamond I have people in my replies telling me how “she was human!” “she made mistakes!””she’s not EVIL!” …like chill. Nobody said she was.
All I’m saying is that she was a BAD PERSON up until the last…40 years of her life (this estimate is based on Greg’s and Steven’s ages.) That’s not calling her a villain or calling her evil, no one’s saying it’s black and white because it’s not but OBJECTIVELY speaking Pink consistently made bad choices and didn’t consider how those choices negatively affected others (see: Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst, Spinel, Bismuth, the list goes on.)
Hate to be the bearer of bad news but that makes you a BAD PERSON. And finding fault in Pink isn’t excusing the other Diamonds for their tyranny. Of the four, Pink is objectively the least terrible but she still was terrible up until she met Greg and had to be taught to empathize with others.
She was a bad person but I understand why she made the decisions she made and I don’t think she had the resources to make better ones. She did try to make good decisions and sometimes didn’t have a lot of options (or thought she didn’t). (except for Spinel that was just cruel)
I don’t see Rose as a villain, which in the end, I think is the point. I just see cycles of abuse and bad decisions and limited perspectives which result in villainous acts by several people at different points.
Pink’s crimes are in proportion to her power and responsibilities. I don’t like judging her because I know I’ve done bad things, that I’ve been selfish and that I’ve hurt people I love. No, I never did anything as bad as her as far as I know but I’ve never been in her situation or held control over other people as she did (whether she wanted to or not) by being a diamond.
Rose’s character is, to me, amazing writing. She’s “a villain” in the realest way. They don’t make you feel terribly bad for her, but they do show that she didn’t have it easy. They don’t make you feel like she was completely selfish, but they do show that she didn’t really know how to empathize or view things from others’ perspective, even if she wanted to (they showed this as early on in the show as Rose’s first appearances). They show that she can change her mind, learn and grow and fight for other people, but that she’s very limited and makes bad decisions. They show she is manipulative, but without malice. Even what she did to Spinel is a technique I’ve seen parents use on kids to get them to be still or let them rest for a while (which is fine if you don’t do it too often, still give the kid attention, and DONT LEAVE THEM FOR 6000 YEARS).

2- where are the flag and the mr.universe shirt?
Having watched the SU movie twice (I bought it digital because I missed the initial broadcast), something did strike me about Pink and her treatment of Spinel and Spinel herself.
First, Pink.
This was Pink not long after that temper tantrum on the Jungle Moon.
AKA Pink at her most childish. A Pink who was selfish and trying to get the other Diamonds’ approval. A Pink who’d previously had her Pearl taken from her and replaced by a new Pearl (who we find out Pink just left as the default form thanks to the movie).
Her doing something that needlessly cruel, and forgetting about it, is on par with the person Pink was at that time. I saw it in a youtube comment on “Drift Away” that at least Pink/Rose poofed/bubbled Bismuth. Well, by that point Pink/Rose might have grown a little.
Does it excuse either action? Hell No. I’m just saying, characterization wise, this really isn’t out of character and it just shows how immature and self-centered Pink was. it was her most Diamond like action she’d ever done. And that ultimately was what I took away from this. She was acting like a Diamond. She had no need of a toy on her new colony so she just left it behind, only this toy was a sentient-sapient being, so she had to cruelly trick Spinel into staying put and not following her.
Then there’s Spinel, or rather what her existence implies.
Factory setting! Pearl has a full set of specs for Spinel. “Your New Best Friend Spinel.” it just reminded me of dolls, and it makes a sick sort of sense that Spinel was literally a toy. Plus the whole “She’ll bring you endless entertainment” bit just before the part of line I have above.
It seems extreme to make a whole sentient-sapient gem as a toy, but then I remembered Blue Diamond has a gem comb to sing to her while she combs her hair and, on Homeworld, the walls literally have eyes and ears.
This means Spinel was, ultimately, always disposable. Because she was always meant to be a child’s plaything.
Spinel was always going to be abandoned. That’s just awful.
Had Pink brought Spinel with her back to Homeworld, or left her on the Earth colony moon base while she was Rose Quartz, I don’t know that the Diamonds would have treated her well without the 6000 year nostalgia goggles for anything that belonged to Pink that they had when they meet her in canon.
So, Spinel was always going to get a raw deal.
It’s just, as always, in going after what she wanted, Pink chose the most selfish and hurtful way possible.
I couldn’t stop thinking of this as I saw how goofy Spinel was. She was literally made to be a toy. All of us outgrow our toys. We may feel kind of bad for the loss of childhood and memories made with the toys (see: Puff the Magic Dragon), but ultimately they are toys and it’s natural to outgrow them.
The only way Spinel was ever going to continue being useful was if she were reused for another gem (or if she grew up a bit, which from what we’ve seen, is very hard for gems on Homeworld). Which I don’t know if the Diamonds would be too elitist for (and I can’t see too many Spinels being of use in their old society anyway).
Thinking about Steven Universe and how... almost bloodthirsty some of the people who claim to be fans of the show are. Literally every time a new villain is introduced I see people clamoring that either
the villain shatters or kills one of the Crystal Gems
Steven is forced to shatter or kill the antagonist
And it's like... have you people even seen this show? Steven's a borderline pacifist; he rarely fights offensively and it's even rarer when he considers poofing a sentient opponent, let alone outright shattering them. Heck, the whole thesis of the show revolves around Steven wanting to reform and befriend his enemies, because the morality of Gem culture is so blue and orange that they usually don't even understand why their actions are wrong (this applies to the protagonists as well; looking at you, Rose).
Steven Universe is a rare example of a show (a children's show, at that!) that has no characters that are portrayed as pure good or pure evil, with Steven coming closest to pure good (and even he can be shown to be selfish) and the Diamonds being the closest to pure evil (and even they are more misguided in their actions than let on). Introducing antagonists that are as completely morally evil wouldn't fit with a show about kindness amid moral grey areas, nor would having the protagonist murder their foe mesh well with a program that, at its core, is about redemption.

Can someone explain this shoe
Minor spoiler for the movie below
Bean
Onion in the movie
Is this significant?
Okay, so maybe I am over-analyzing things here... but, well, we all know the Crewniverse love dropping hints all over the place.
This is a shot of right after Ronaldo spits out his drink “Steven’s pregnant?!”
The image on Ronaldo’s screen appears to be Steven with cat fingers he posts on his tumblr: http://keepbeachcityweird.tumblr.com/post/68115977116/stevens-fingers-what
So, is this just a one-off reference between episodes? Or is this Ronaldo theory of Steven somehow having another consciousness inside him (Rose?) going to turn out to be true, and will it relate at all to the cat finger episode?
A quick sketch of my take on (crop-hoodie wearing) human Peri
Speak no evil See no evil Hear no evil Do no evil
This is really fitting for all the respective Pearls.... wow
oh i was just having fun with this for a while ;u;
Over-all short Peri is my favourite redesign... please make canon!
The framing of this shot...
Look at how Nephrite’s hand covers Steven’s face exactly as she says “You destroyed Rose Quartz”
The Crewniverse really get those details right
