Tiny permanence sketch for the soul
Spinoza believed that all things wish to go on being what they are — stone wishes eternally to be stone, and tiger, to be tiger. I shall endure in Borges, not in myself (if, indeed, I am anybody at all), but I recognize myself less in his books than in many others', or in the tedious strumming of a guitar.
Jorge Luis Borges, "Borges and I"
one thing i really love about The Permanence is that there is not one specific way of defining it.
the vidyadhara imagine, and the preceptors guess; even Long didn’t have a specific definition, only THEIR interpretation.
permanence is an ideal brought up by an aeon that was not Permanent THEMSELVES, which really makes you wonder if Long’s permanence was truly the “right” one.
every character closely tied to the Permanence we meet in game has immortalised themselves, or wishes to; most of them are scholars.
dan heng himself, as an archivist, is the one that preserves knowledge of every planet we see, and every faction we meet, so that it exists permanently within the data bank.
memories never truly die in the xianzhou, the same way they never truly die when transcribed in a book. i’m so glad they made the character so deeply connected with the permanence also be connected with the closest thing to a library the express has.
i can’t wait to see how his journey through this “new” permanence he met in amphoreus will shape his own idea of it.
while BOTH water and earth ARE permanent, the way they go about it is so different it was a great idea to have him experience both.
earth keeps changing its shape to continue its existence, erosion and other factors changing it fundamentally, while water stubbornly stays in its place, as long as possible.
perhaps this perspective is what dan feng and the other yinyue-juns were missing, while studying their own Permanence.
perhaps staying rooted in one place is the antithesis to permanence, even if it seems an oxymoron.
perhaps that’s why Long disappeared.
Absurdity finds its expression in the opposition between what lasts and what does not last. Granting that there is but one way of lasting, which is lasting eternally, and that there is no middle way. We belong to the world that does not last. And all that does not last — and nothing but what does not last — is ours.
Albert Camus, Notebooks, 1942-1951
Stone crumbles. Wood rots. People, well they die. But things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on and on.
