Things to do with your characters to flesh them out
Write fanfics / AUs about them
Answer personality tests as if you were them
Do various Picrews or other dress up games
Write AITA posts from their perspective
Build their wardrobe by creating/collecting outfits
Figure out their perfume/scent using the search by notes function on fragrantica
Put together a playlist of songs that they would listen to
Create a family tree for them on familyecho.com
Make a concept album for a singer au, with a cover and songs they would write and sing
Create a “What’s in my bag?’ for them
Design their home in homebyme.com
Fill out character templates
Roleplay as them with other people on oc social network (no ai involved or even allowed!)
Design (fake) social media pages for them (Zeeob for most social medias and texting, PhotoNote for fake instagram, Twinote for fake twitter, TweetGen for tweets and replies, Classtools Fakebook for fake facebook, …)
HIGHLYYY recommend writing different AUs! I've learned so much about my OCs through writing different AUs. They've had conversations and had to work out situations that have nothing to do with the original story, and it's so helpful for developing or learning about their personalities.
Some things might not even be explicitly relevant to your story, but help you understand your character's personality, background, or beliefs better. Or maybe you'll find something about them that's important enough that you realize there should be a scene in your story to show that part of them.
Even cute little fluffy coffee shop AUs can be really helpful. What do they order, and why? How do they interact with the person behind the bar, or the people in line? Do they sit inside or outside? How do they feel about the interior of the cafe? Do they find it to be a memorable place, or could they forget about it as soon as they look away? Why do they feel that way?
I have an OC who likes to get iced coffee, because it always comes in a glass, and she likes to see the coffee to cream ratio before she stirs it. Silly information? Absolutely. But I dunno, I like knowing that about her.
It also can be really good when you have writers block :)

Details That Instantly Deepen a Setting
Instead of trying to fill paragraphs describing everything, choose one or two things that breathe.
• The way the floorboards creak in one specific spot • A stain on the ceiling no one acknowledges • A flickering light that makes gives everyone a slight headache • The smell of something burnt and forgotten • A crooked family photo • Dust in the sunlight • A cracked mug someone refuses to throw away • The hum of an appliance in silence • A chair that wobbles • A window that should open, but doesn't • Shoes lined up too neatly • A plant flourishing, or showing signs of obvious neglect • The sound of neighbors arguing • A clock that’s slightly off
Specificity creates immersion, not necessarily paragraphs. One good detail can carry a scene.

How to not run out of ideas as a writer
allow yourself to be bored: keeping your mind occupied at all times with music, podcasts, books, shows, tv, social media feeds, or whatever won’t allow it to process the input and develop new ideas. next time you’re on the bus and bored, just let your mind wander
consume media: read articles, books, wikipedia pages, folklore… draw inspiration from anything and everything
curate playlists and pinterest boards
every time you have an idea about a plot, a story idea or even just one line of dialogue, put it in a long list that you can come back to any time
create a rich world with a lot of fleshed out characters and details. it is easier to create a story when you actually know what you are working with rather than having to come up with everything alongside your plot
