Shout-out to my friend @thewatersofmatanui for making me this stylized headshot of Shadow Stealer as a late holiday gift! I had actually requested the one with a background, but I found the transparent one considerably more appealing. So yeah, kudos to her for the work! 👍
Dark Hunters: Shadow Stealer
There are no beings like Shadow Stealer. In all my years of recruiting from the darkest and strangest corners of the Great Spirit’s universe, I never found any species to which he could belong, even as a variant or mutant. Though he may resemble an overgrown brakas without a mask, Shadow Stealer is one of the oldest beings of our universe, dating back to the Time Before Time. He might even be one of Artakha’s own creations, making him a sort of counter to Devastator - if that boastful being’s autobiography is to be believed.
Shadow Stealer appeared on Odina shortly after the organization began, having heard of our work as simple mercenaries. Not sure if I could trust him, I assigned him a hefty quest: to find the Staff of Artakha, a legendary artifact from the Before-Time. I recommended he track down some innocent crafter and torture the information out of them, but for “moral reasons”, Shadow Stealer refused to do this. With such an artificial limit, the task should have taken years, as the staff’s resting place was lost to time. Rumors pointed to the Metru Nui Archives, but exploring that vast complex of tunnels would be absolute folly without any leads.
Shadow Stealer found the staff in days. However, that scant time was enough for him to have a change of heart. After he summoned my Dark Hunters to pick up the artifact, he laid a trap with the Turaga-Regent of the time. Unfortunately for Shadow Stealer, I had anticipated such a betrayal, and my operatives were prepared. They left with the staff - though lacking some of the team’s members, slain by Shadow Stealer’s blades. Although his aim was noble, his methods was deemed less so, and Shadow Stealer found himself unwelcome in Metru Nui. Ever since, he has wandered the universe, hunting my hunters to hone his skills.
POWERS: Shadow Stealer has the rare and esoteric ability to transport himself through shadows. How this is accomplished is a matter of constant debate among schools of elemental study, although they are dealing only with legends of such a being. Such a thing is impossible for a Toa, and even the Makuta, so it is unclear how Shadow Stealer manages it. Perhaps it was an early design of the Great Beings that was later abandoned. In addition to his special power, Shadow Stealer has two long arms and a prehensile tail, each holding a double-edged blade, which he uses to devastating effect in close combat.
STATUS: Rogue. If my medics’ reports are accurate, Shadow Stealer has finally found me, and is now haunting Creep Canyon to thin the ranks of my organization. Frankly, if he wanted to assassinate me, he should have done it millennia ago, when I had less time and resources to prepare. But I don’t think that is Shadow Stealer’s goal. He styles himself a hero, an old-fashioned one. I believe Shadow Stealer intends to vanquish me in a fair fight. I look forward to informing him that such a thing does not exist.
In my universe their are these movies called "the dark knight trilogy" they seem like something you would be interested in. so would you call yourself a fan?
…hmmh. An unusual question - but yes, I believe I would. The Dark Knight and I share several characteristics with each other, namely the strong sense of justice. He seems like the kind of a character that I’d like.
Actually that’s quite fitting.
Both of you are extremely pretentious and overrated.
…
O Mata Nui, spare my soul. Lariska, thee hath slain me with thy sharp tongue and wit.
What cruel misfortune that neither will ever be as sharp as the blade that took your arm.
…
…
…
You know, it wasn’t quick.
Officially they put down that the time as fourteen whole hours. It felt…much longer than that, but I probably wasn’t in the best of states to know for certain.
I was awake the whole time; no sedatives, no painkillers. Just strapped tightly to a table in some back room of the infirmary, now they did give something so I couldn’t move or make noise… But I was still fully cognizant, I could still feel everything, I could still watch the entire procedure like they had intended…
One muscle fiber sliced at a time… Honestly, they could have grabbed some old worn knife from the kitchen and that would have been far better than what they had used on me. I was this close to almost getting parts of my shoulder chopped off because of infection.
Around fourteen hours; no breaks, no interruptions. Fourteen straight hours of long, slow, drawn out cutting…
Even afterwords, once I had to got the mechanical arm installed, I still had to keep going back… to that same infirmary… for constant minor adjustments to it. Almost everyday… for several weeks on end.
But sure, all right.
You go ahead and go straight for the forced amputation when someone makes a snarky comparison to you and some character. That’s certainly reasonable.
I’m sure all your former friends from back in the day would be so, oh so very proud of you.
…hrmh. Every time I hear something new about Shadowed One, he keeps one-upping my expectations.
Well, I’d make several remarks - frankly, I have no reason not to - but, seeing the spot I hit is sore... the trouble isn’t worth it.
My apologies, then.
What is your opinion on the Order of Mata Nui?
I’ve never really appreciated dubious organizations that work behind the scenes and veil themselves under a deity’s name to make their actions feel justified
Why didn't you join the organization that took The Hand of Artakha's place, The Order of Mata Nui?
I’ve answered this question before - but, it’s been a while, so I’ll recap.
There were two reasons - one was that Helryx did not know where to look for me. I did stay in the abandoned headquarters of the Hand for a dozen years, that much is true, but I was not known for being a homebody in the Hand and spent most of my life low-profile, never mind my shadow step ability. She was right to assume I could’ve been anywhere.
The second reason was that she was certain I would’ve either refused to join or eventually become rebellious due to the Order’s nature as a big brother as opposed to a guiding hand. She was correct on that front - I would’ve never agreed to the things they’ve done.
Now, I know what you’re thinking - “yet you joined the Dark Hunters.“ That was different. I wanted a meaning after tens of thousands of years of my life had amounted to nothing - it was only after I left them that I regained my spark. Had I found Helryx instead of Shadowed One that day, I would’ve joined the Order. How that would’ve gone is another story.

since you're a creation of Artakha and your colleague Devastator is a creation(?) of Karzahni, does that make you some sort of opposing pole to him?
…I find it mildly insulting that you’d compare me to Devastator of all people…
Regardless, I don’t see him as my polar opposite - even if he were a creation of Karzahni. His skills are average at best, and he has the subtlety of a Tahtorak rampaging through Metru Nui.
There’s also the fact that the man, as you humans put it, “lies out of his ass.”
He’s claimed to be the second strongest being in the universe, despite doing nothing when Teridax took over. He can turn into lava, yet he never chooses to do so when the opportunity calls. He can raise dead, but he conveniently doesn’t have to. He can move mountains, but that’s too taxing for the moment. He has the strength of five Toa coursing through his veins, but for some odd reason he can lose and has done so often.
Finally, for all the bravado, he has no worldly experience, wisdom or age hidden behind his words and actions. I’m fairly certain that someone “second to Mata Nui” would’ve been noticed by the Brotherhood, Dark Hunters and the Order long before he bothered to rear his head onto Odina. Which, again, brings me to the previous point of him doing absolutely nothing when Teridax took over the universe.
All in all, his imagination far surpasses his skill. If not for his sand transmutation ability, he would’ve died a long time ago.
Usually most people can tell Devastator is full of shit by just looking at him. But I guess you really had to see it first hand, over a course of several hundred years, for it to really set in for you.
Though incidentally, if I remember, I think I heard something about him trying very actively to work with The Order during the Teridax reign…
Ah, Lariska.
Wonderful to see that you managed to peel yourself off the floor this morning.
Ah well, you know I kinda have to.
I still have a job to get to, things to actually do with my life… A lot of stuff to get done.
Like assaulting your co-workers and drinking yourself into drunken stupor on weekly basis.
What a life you lead.
And you set such a precedence yourself.
I’m sure all your former friends from your dissolved cult would be so proud.
Shadow Stealer’s eye twitches.
"Prouder than the medic can ever be of you.”

Why did you join the Dark Hunters?
I was lost.
Artakha created me for the sole purpose of being a member of the Hand. My Destiny was that of helping others and defending those who needed it. Then, they created the Toa.
Can you imagine what it is like, working for years on something you quite literally existed for, only to be rendered obsolete the next week?
I spent millennia after the Hand vanished doing what I believed was right. That despite the Toa having taken my place, I could still help the world.
…eventually, I just… broke. I lost my faith and the sight of the path I walked upon. I lost my energy to bother with what I was created to do. Without anyone to help or guide me, life became increasingly… difficult to bear, if you will.
Then he found me.
He promised me a home, purpose, and life. A reason to exist. At the time, the Dark Hunters were “publicly” a mercenary corporation, not a world-encompassing crime syndicate - and I was ready to cling onto anything that would bring me back to the old days.
Shadowed One is a silver-tongued manipulator, rotten to the core. As much as I loathe to admit it, it didn’t take him much to convince me.
