It is interesting to think about what a dance to this song would have looked like since we only practiced one dance this year. It seems pretty slow, so I imagine that there were ample opportunities for flirting between men and women!
Interesting piece! I also wonder about the different types of dancing according to the tempo and mood of the music. It would also be interesting to track the evolution of music throughout the Regency period and determine which cultural influences caused that change.
In this context my particular interest in the conversation in Persuasion is the way in which Austen explores the interplay between the proprieties of conversation and the attempts of honest and open people to achieve communication in a revealing, exciting, and intensely moving way.

This is an interesting essay in which Linda Bree shows the evolution of Anne’s status in conversation and the way it parallels her character growth throughout the novel. In the beginning, she is ignored by her father and Elizabeth. They do not respect her ideas and opinions even though she is clearly the most sensible one there. She is transformed by her time at Uppercross, where she is finally able to get a word in edgewise. Her final verbal war with Captain Harville represents her coming full circle and finally being able to stand up for herself.

A detailed map of Bath as it was during Jane Austen’s time. As discussed in an infographic, all roads lead to Bath! It was certainly central in several of Jane Austen’s novels, and was seen as a place where one could go to appear important without actually having wealth. This is where Sir Walter Elliot goes, instead of travelling to London, to try and salvage his status.

Persuasion by Jane Austen, p. 166 (Chapter XXIII)
You go, Anne! Finally, we see Anne stand up for herself in a battle of wits against Captain Harville. Usually, in Jane Austen novels, romance is established by verbal sparring between the protagonist and the leading male (ahem, referencing my own infographic). However, because the first volume of Persuasion is missing, we as the readers don’t get to see these exchanges between Captain Wentworth and Anne. All we see is the aftermath of a relationship that has already dissolved. Here, we finally get a strong emotional reaction out of Anne when she claims that women love longer than men because they have less to distract themselves from their emotions. Luckily for her, Wentworth was never able to get over her and this battle of wits is what moves him to write the letter professing his feelings for Anne.

Persuasion by Jane Austen, p. 113 (Volume XVII)
Lady Russell is trying to be a good friend and mentor to Anne by looking our for her best interests. She thinks that marrying Mr. Elliot is the right decision, and that it will restore Anne to her proper place in society, namely her mother’s place. A sensible woman will once again be the mistress of Kellynch, and Anne will have a position of security in her home. This really highlights the contrast between Anne and some of the other protagonists, like Elizabeth Bennet or Emma Woodhouse. These two women had the benefits of friends or confidantes who were their equals or lower in status than themselves. Elizabeth had Jane, her sister, with whom she could share her thoughts and feelings. Emma had Mrs. Weston and Harriet Smith to use as puppets for her matchmaking practice. Anne, on the other hand, has no one but Lady Russell to confide in for the most part. While Lady Russell’s intentions are good, her methods are questionable. She strongly urged Anne not to marry Captain Wentworth; Anne, feeling the difference in age and position between herself and the Lady, was persuaded not to. The only person Anne can talk to as an equal is Mrs. Smith, but she is only present for a short period of time.

This is hilarious. It manages to display some of the funniest moments in Austen’s novels in a single bingo sheet.
Her father and sister were glad to see her, for the sake of shewing her the house and furniture, and met her with kindness. Her making a fourth, when they sat down to dinner, was noticed as an advantage.
Persuasion by Jane Austen, p. 96 (Chapter XV)
On the one hand, I found this quote pretty funny. It highlights the ridiculousness of Sir Walter Elliot and Elizabeth and shows their attachment to material possessions and the appearance of status. On the other hand, I felt terrible for Anne in this moment. Not only does her family not respect her or her opinions, but they don’t even have the decency to pretend to be interested in her. And she is certainly aware of this lack of familial attachment. I sympathize with Anne even though I do feel a little frustrated that she doesn’t stand up for herself. But times were different, and there wasn’t much she could do about her father’s unfair treatment.

An example of Regency period music, played on a harp. I wonder how common harps and other instruments were in this time period. Jane Austen’s works often make mention of pianos, and young ladies are often seen showing off their accomplishments by playing piano. Were other instruments as ubiquitous?

Persuasion by Jane Austen, 75 (Chapter XII)
I really like this little moment between Anne and Captain Wentworth. Up until this point, we have been in the mindset of Anne, thinking that Captain Wentworth must hate her for spurning his affections as she did and ending their relationship before he left on his commission. At this point, we finally have a glimpse of hope for what their relationship could be. It is stated earlier in the novel that Anne’s youthful beauty was cut short by her grief over losing the Captain, but now it seems to be restored by his presence. The events of this chapter really seem to be moving the plot along, as Louisa Musgrove is injured and Anne must stay to tend to her.

Persuasion by Jane Austen, 20 (Chapter IV)
Sir Walter Elliot is predisposed to dislike sailors because they have an ungentlemanly profession, having to work to earn money instead of inheriting an income. This once again displays his and Lady Russell’s prejudice against the match between Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth. From the brief summary of their relationship, it seemed as though they were quite enamored with each other, and we have seen marriages of young characters before (Marianne in Sense and Sensibility). Anne was perhaps too easily persuaded against the match by her elders. However, it would have been very difficult for her to go against their wishes.
