Earlier this week Raf Simons took to Tokyo to unveil his Esprit collection, and in true Dior fashion he presented one that internationally captured the industry’s heart. The runway was that of a gridded cube, faux snowflakes fell and glittered as they caught the futuristic flash of several spotlights all while models slowly entered the interstellar winter wonderland. A galactic palette of every blue known to humankind– from petrol, to teal, cobalt, to powder, navy and steel; a galore of greys and greens, and my favourite hue being a spaceman silver metallic. Taking main stage were sequined turtlenecks which were simple but effective in illuminating every look, standing out like stars in the night sky underneath almost ankle-length dresses and coats made of thick wool, knitted cashmere, washed leather , crepe and mink – as you can see, a mix of diverse textures took charge, transporting pieces into a world of its own.  Patterns also came in astronomic varieties, featuring contrasting layers such as jacquard, stripes and chequered creating an eye-catching optical illusion vibe, hypnotising spectators as the movements of models took place. My favourite part of the show had to be the fit; pieces were that of feminine structure, with a fluidity about them creating a new-found freedom, leaving the strong Dior women to rule their everyday lives with magic modernity. This collection was a French-Japanese fantasy hybrid, it’s luxury obvious;  I also commend Mr Simons for using experimentation more than ever because it is probably the most cohesive and spectacular show he has ever produced since his time at the fashion house, and this is coming from a diehard Raf fan. Each piece truly shone bright like a custom Dior diamond, captivating even the most sceptical of fashion fans and showing us once again why the classic house of Christian Dior is, in one word; iconic.
