Thoughts on “Rebels”

I’ve been having a “Star Wars Rebels” rewatch in recent weeks and have been struck all over again by what a terrific piece of work this series is.  With the exception of “Rogue One” I don’t think any of the other more recent SW canon content captures the look, tenor and all-round feel of the OT quite so perfectly.

OK, so it doesn’t exactly capture the look, because it’s animation rather than live-action-plus-SFX; the difference of medium inevitably makes for visual differences. But it has the same quality of jumping from domestic-level scenes to scenes on a huge scale.

as much as i like the original trilogy, i wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much without the prequels. in the ot, vader is just some guy who was a jedi before he turned to the dark side for reasons that were never explained. the twins' mother is a non-entity. the emperor is treated as an even greater threat than vader, who can apparently also wield the force, but he's barely in the trilogy and almost nothing is known about him. we have little justification for luke's belief in the good that potentially exists in his father, except MAYBE for vader's offer to rule the galaxy together, suggesting that he cares more about his son than the emperor. but that's such a pale comparison to what we know about anakin from the prequels and how much he loved padme and how happy he was about her pregnancy. vader and obi-wan's duel on the death star doesn't hold nearly as much weight without their previous one on mustafar. luke and leia finding each other isn't the same without knowing how they were separated. the fact that leia even has any memories of her mother, that she remembers her as beautiful and kind but sad, has actual meaning by knowing who padme was, by knowing that she died still believing in the good in anakin. which consequently makes luke's belief in his father all the more significant. that we get to see anakin, who was born into slavery, kill palpatine, his master and a man who had groomed anakin since he was a child, is even more satisfying and powerful than it originally was without the prequels. so whenever purists talk about how they only acknowledge the ot, i just can't relate to that sentiment because without the pt, the original trilogy just feels kinda empty. yeah, they're fun movies, but they're far better ones with the prequels' addition. and the original trilogy is not complete without them.

hey so anyone else notice that when u meditate in fallen order it looks kinda like the world between worlds. i know its probably coincidence, but wouldnt it be funny if it actually was. like the emperor has been chasing after this for years and turns out random kid who's been living on Planet Trash for the past decade and a bit can just space out and end up there. He looks up one day and sees Ahsoka and Ezra sprinting away from the emperor on some weird light pathways and is just like "huh thats new"
