So tired of modern aus where kaladin drops out of medical school and works in a coffee shop or something boring like that.

You just know modern au kaladin would complete his medical degree and work for a public hospital, only to be exploited so bad it almost kills him, you know hes forced to experience the hells of dangerously underfunded below standard conditions and working 23 hour shifts because there is constant staffing problems and the hospital is always full, you know he burns himself out to the point of destroying his entire life and all his relationships but hes too dedicated to helping people to stop

Love this concept!! Seems very in character too.

In my modern AU, Kaladin was in the middle of medical school when Tien gets sick/injured. To the protest of his parents, he takes every last bit of money in his scholarship and education funds and finds a way to apply them the Tiens hospitalization.

It doesn't work, because the hospital doesn't see a cent of the ''generous donation" Amaram publicly promised and so they can't get the specialized equipment they would need. Kaladin does whatever he can to make that known, and ends up in prison because of it. After that, no medical school will touch him, no matter his grades.

Not knowing what else to do, he rounds up any of his buddies for jail who have gotten out, and they put together some sort of freelance bodyguard/bouncer for hire company just to make ends meet. It isn't what Kaladin wants to do with his life, but it's where circumstances lead him and at least he is providing his people with enough of a job that they can live.

So yeah, that was Kaladin's never at all mentioned backstory in a one shot idea I had where Adolin bribed him into being a model for a televised fashion competition that Adolin and Shallan we're contestants on.
