GAH HE IS CHARLIE SHELBY
I'm happy for Charlie, I really am, but I can't help feeling bad for Natalia. She'd been campaigning for this role for years.
"I'd like to think that he went back to check on Nancy after he left her blackout drunk in the bathroom and saw Jonathon taking care of her. I mean how else would he know that to be honest?" bc they once again don’t want to acknowledge that he left his girlfriend at a party drunk and didn’t even make sure she got home. anything to defend him lol
This part of the conversation actually got me thinking about how bummed I am that they kind of dropped exploring how the Byers are perceived by the town after the first few seasons. It doesn't help that s3 is set in the summer and then they move away, but gosh I would have really loved if they'd explored more of how jancy as a couple is treated by their classmates at school.
Because, after the party for instance, I can definitely envision some of Nancy's peers rushing up to her at school in pseudo-concern, all "Oh my god, are you okay? It's just that we saw you leaving with *whispers* Jonathan Byers. *shudders* God, he didn't try anything on you, did you?" And the concern is so phony and what they're implying is so horrible Nancy very much wants to punch their lights out (but she refrains) (and also she can't even remember what happened at the party let alone Jonathan taking her home, so she's confused and all the swirling rumors are making it worse.) There's also the "that was your other boyfriend" line from Steve, combined with the slut marquee from the year previous, that definitely gets me wondering how many classmates think of Nancy as slut and latch on to Jonathan taking her home as evidence, and find the whole thing funny and aren't afraid to make it known. She and Jonathan eat lunch together in the parking lot, and I don't think it's just because the weather is warm.
Add to that Nancy actually starting to date Jonathan so quickly after the breakup with Steve...and, well. She left King Steve after her fell from grace and got together with a boy widely seen as a weirdo and creep. The slut and the creep. That'll definitely keep a high school talking.
I know the obvious reason for Robin pushing Nancy towards Steve in s4 is because Steve's her bestie, but I think there might have been another unspoken reason why both Robin and Eddie boost up st4ncy in that they just understand how Nancy could be with someone like Jonathan (meaning, the narrative they have of who Jonathan is.) It could have been really interesting to explore how even other outsiders/"freaks" like Eddie have still internalized a lot of what the town thought about Jonathan and the Byers.
Neither Robin or Eddie really know him, and it therefore makes sense that there's a disconnect between the Nancy in front of them and who they feel Jonathan is. Jancy as a couple doesn't make sense to them. Why would Nancy be with the weirdo kid who never talks in school and eats alone and is known to be a total creep by everyone? On the surface, under that light, she seems to "fit" more with Steve. I would have appreciated Eddie and Robin pushing st4ncy so much more if it was used as a way to explore these underlying biases (even and especially, amongst other outsiders) and then debunk them when Jonathan returned (which I guess they couldn't do with eddie because, well, ☠️ bones 🦴, but they still could have done it with Robin in s5 instead of serving us a giant platter of nothing.) They were capable of doing it with Robin and Nancy, with Robin learning Nancy isn't the priss she thought she was and Nancy learning Robin isn't annoyingly clueless but fun and smart, yet they ignore how the other teens think of Jonathan? Disappointing. There was so much interesting untapped material to work with there.
Here's how I've always imagined it playing out:
As Jonathan puts a barely conscious, wasted Nancy into his car (think: that infamous scene in Sixteen Candles), Billy is nearby and loudly says something like, 'Looks like someone's getting lucky tonight.' Tommy, Carol, etc laugh, other people just turn and look.
'King Steve's' girlfriend leaving the party with the 'pretentious creep' would definitely be a noteworthy event and it would have spread through the school like wildfire. Of course Steve had heard about it.
POV: You've just told him he can't have ice cream unless he eats all his veggies.
Also in case anyone missed it, he mentioned his character in Twice Over is Australian 👀👀 let’s start praying for that accent work 😭😂
oh god i had missed that but truly 😭 that’s a hard one
As an Australian, this makes me very worried. There's only one non-Australian actor who can do a decent job with our accent, and his name is Dev Patel.
btw I’m still in the middle of this ST doc and not only are the duffers just absolutely embarrassing themselves, but the Joyce/Winona/Byers fam erasure is so annoying!
Nominative determinism strikes again.
jonathan byers and the bad bitch he pulled by being strange, awkward and off-putting ☝🏻😌 ✨
(you don't understand, they've been my ride or die since 2016, I adore them 😭 wasn't it sooo nice how they got their perfect and long awaited endgame who wasn't in any way up to interpretation at all? 😀 and how their characterization and development didn't suffer one bit for it?! anyway, love that they're happily together in 1989, taking NY's journalism/film alt scene by storm like the unstoppable and supportive power couple they've always been 😊🥰)
also the business casual princess diana and david lynch/david byrne energy they brought to the epilogue is unparalleled👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 fits them so well, couldn't be more perfect, true style icons 🙌🏻 and I love drawing clothing so gave me no choice but to get me (briefly) out of my internet retirement 💅🏻
Jancy broke up just to be fuck buddies for a bit before getting back together.

Two worlds collided

The Duffers really fumbled by not having this play during the closing credits of the finale.
Charlie Heaton: Charms everybody he meets, extroverted, inspires musicians to write songs about him, whole cast of ST in love with him
Casting directors: 'The perfect actor for this socially awkward character!'
and they ran off into the sunset
Is Mr Clarke working from a curriculum, or does he just rock up every day and talk about anything he feels like?
("Ever hear about the guy who survived a metal spike through the skull?" "Check out how cool wormholes are!")
And apparently you don't need any type of qualifications to teach sex ed! If you can play baseball and you've had sex, you've got the job.
Wait how did Hop become Police Chief again... how are people okay with him being alive.... and then just like "oh you can come back now as police chief"
"Hello, I'm new in town and I'd like to apply for the position of Police Chief."
"Jim Hopper, is that you?!"
"Who? Never heard of him. My name is, er, Tim. Yes, that's it. Tim Bopper."
Silver lining of the Jancy breakup: it gives Jonathan an opportunity to explore his bisexuality.

It's wild that Vickie actually believed Robin worked at WSQK, a radio station which has no other employees and appears to only make sporadic short broadcasts consisting entirely of Robin monologing over songs or recapping everything that has happened in Hawkins over the past 18 months.
nancy wheeler I could never ever be upset with you but YOU HATE THE CLASH???
Jancy breaking up. England winning the Boxing Day Test. 2025 is really ending on a low note.
