Rant about characters wearing rosaries in fics behind the cut

Whenever I am reading fics in a fandom where one of the characters is Catholic I always run into fics where THEY'RE WEARING THE ROSARY AS A NECKLACE.

It's not a necklace!!! Catholics and especially a priest would not wear it as a necklace!! Yes, they are beautiful and it's so wonderfully symbolic when someone snaps one and a bunch of beads clatter onto the floor in a physical display of their faith being shattered.

But if you want the character to be a Catholic they would know better than to wear it like a necklace.

They can be wrapped around a wrist or kept in a pocket, they even make rings though you're not meant to wear them so much as use them around your finger during the rosary to then remove it when finished.

This is the ring design I'm most familiar with.

The rosary is a prayer tool which is why you're not supposed to wear it. It's not a decoration. Catholics consider it sacramental in nature.

I'm not a practicing Catholic anymore and I don't actually care if people wear one, but if you're writing someone who is or was Catholic and/or is a priest then it shows a lack of care to have them wearing this exceptionally sacred (to Catholics) prayer tool as a necklace. Making someone wear one as jewelry would be making a statement that they were never practicing in the first place or are perhaps making a rebellious statement towards their religious upbringing by making mundane the sacred.

It always takes me out of the story when people do this so here's your PSA. Your symbolism will be more powerful if you do it right.
