Everyone should watch Defunctland's videos about the Disney parks before watching Knights of Guinevere like I think it's necessary homework
I specifically recommend these:
Walt Disney's Childhood Amusement Park: Electric Park - Explains a lot about Walt's nostalgic tendencies that became the foundation of his animation studio and parks.
The Craziest Party Walt Disney Ever Threw - a fascinating look into the early days of the animation studio including work culture, Walt's union busting, and, indeed, a very crazy party.
The History of Mickey Mouse Park & the History of Tomorrowland (1955) - Mickey Mouse Park was the precursor to Disneyland and the original Tomorrowland gives a very interesting perspective on how Disney's idealized view of the past influenced his ideas of the future.
Honestly, if you have the time, I recommend just watching through Defunctland season 3, which is a thorough history of Walt Disney's career (with some detours to Coney Island and the like). Some of the most interesting history content out there imo.
Disney's Fast Pass: a Complicated History - the singular best way to understand why Disney (TM) is the way that it is. Between this and Jenny Nicholson's video about the failed Star Wars hotel, you'll get a very good understanding of Disney's brand of greed.
I feel a little insane recommending hours and hours of theme park content but it's all high quality stuff worth your time. Excellent to have in the background while drawing, cleaning, etc., but also worth devoting full attention to if that's what you're into :3
I TAKE IT BACK (not really but) YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS VIDEO ABOUT THE ORIGINAL EPCOT IDEA
tl;dw: Walt Disney wanted to create a company town mini utopia where people would live and work and be discouraged from having cars and no one would be unemployed or retired AND it would also be a tourism destination where guests could see futuristic technology being used in businesses and in people's home but then (famously) Walt DIED before it reached the final planning stages and EPCOT eventually became one park of Disney World.
I think Knights of Guinevere's Park Planet is going to be based on a similar idea, except instead of swampland outside Orlando, Florida, it'll be a whole planet. This lines up really well with my theories and also the small text at the bottom of the Park Planet rules page that says "Galactic Law is applicable only to Planets or Satellites that are Signatory Members, otherwise it is non-compulsory" as Walt intended EPCOT to exist largely outside of state governance.
^guy who definitely made a company town planet to fix his societal pet peeves under the guise of both nostalgia and progress
You can't mention Defunctland and EPCOT, and not include a link to Defunctland's Journey to EPCOT Center: A Symphonic History
aka one of, if not the most visually compelling documentaries I have ever seen. Yes, you have to actually watch it, not have it on in the background while you cook dinner. But it's worth it, trust me
like okay I know, I know. This video is a bit more of a detour/side quest/complementary information to all the other videos, but I highly recommend it.
