Another Mortal Kombat detail that I feel has been lost from modern MK but is really awesome is that Johnny Cage is still making movies.
Johnny tends to be treated as a douchey movie star who has to undergo character development and find a selfless hero inside himself.
But OG Johnny was a douchey movie star and selfless hero. He wore both hats interchangeably. He was the first person who would volunteer to risk his life for the fate of the Earth and the guy who walks up to an opponent, tips his shades, and goes "Time to Un-Cage the RAGE, bay-bee!"
He was a dipshit. But he was our dipshit. A heroic dipshit.
The animated film Cage Match captures this dynamic pretty well, I think.
And one of the ways that manifested is that he kept making movies. After every big MK plot, Johnny would make a movie based on its events. He showed up, risking and even sometimes sacrificing his life for the Earth, and then spun it into a new blockbuster. That was a fun detail about him that I miss.
