Giving "Chance" a Second Chance
On Monday, August 17th 2020, I was scrolling through Facebook when I came across this post.
I rushed at the opportunity to save this little soul, even though he was half way around the globe. Seeing a post like that and having the ability to help or even save this poor dog, I knew I had to hit pause on what I was doing and figure out a way to help.
That day, I reached out to one of our team members (Joanna) who has helped us many times before with feeding and saving strays. She was quick to say yes, so we got her to the scene immediately. Upon arriving, "Browny" named by the construction workers, was living on a construction site and would occasionally get fed by the construction workers. He was very weak, frail, and needing of basic necessities as he was starving for days on end with no place to call a real home.
As Joanna held out a hand to meet Browny for the first time, it looked as though he had distemper. Similar to HIV in humans, it is a medical illness dogs may contract from one another spread through saliva, urine or even blood that unfortunately, kills most stray dogs. As Joanna looked into his eyes further, there was an immediate build in trust and hope that led Browny to allow her to pet him. At that moment, she knew he was a sweet and hopeful soul, looking for someone or somewhere to call home.
The construction workers then helped to get Browny off the construction site and into the van with Joanna. She then took him to his first ever vet appointment where she learned about his kidney failure. He was in desperate need of serious medical care. With this information, we knew it was going to be hard, but we knew we needed to give him a second chance. It was then, I decided on his new name, "Chance". We had high hopes for Chance. However, he was reluctant to eat or even drink water. Joanna was under his full care, watching and caring for him around all hours of the day/night. She would syringe feed him, since that was the only way he would really eat. She would give him words of encouragement and most importantly together, we gave him a place to call home. Throughout the process of showing Chance what love was like, he seemed more hopeful and his willingness to eat was improving. Sadly, even after all the love and vet care, we were just too late. On Tuesday, August 25th, Chance said his last goodbyes and crossed over. We were distraught, as we couldn't be there to even get a chance to say hello or even goodbye but luckily our team member, Joanne, was there to comfort him through it all.
Through Chance's passing, we have come together and to want to make an impact on the world. We share his story not so we can benefit from it, but to help others like him because the truth is... all strays deserve a second Chance.
