āHeās going to be furious. You know that right?āĀ
My brother was standing by the window of my hospital room, clutching a mobile phone nervously with his good hand. His other hand was wrapped in plaster cast, which sheathed his entire arm up to the shoulder. He was wearing a sling, but had otherwise been dispatched from the hospital.Ā
āHeāll probably cut you off from the family,ā he warned me. āOr he might come to Japan. Is this what you really want?āĀ
āI donāt care,ā I said.Ā
My brother sighed, but not in disapproval. I could sense he was even more nervous than I was to make this phone call. Gripping the phone, he left the room with a muttered, āIāll be right back.āĀ
The June heat was sticky. Even my hospital room felt stuffy, and although there was a small fan on the table in the corner it offered little in terms of relief. We had tried opening the window, however a mechanism prevented it from opening beyond a few inches, meaning the hospital room had become nothing short of sweltering.Ā
I didnāt want to think about the phone call my brother was having at this moment. Had he already broken the news? Had my father even picked up the phone? The thought gave me butterflies in my stomach. As a distraction, I watched the birds flitting between the tree branches outside my window, but they only reminded me of what I craved most. Just a little longer, and I would be as free as they were. It seemed so easy to separate myself from my past now that I was half a world away. How had I never realised it before?Ā
