I like how throughout TUA, we get little moments where Five forgets that he’s in his 13 year old body.

In 2x03 there’s the scene where he’s in the diner with Vanya, they get poured some coffee, and he tells the waitress, “Leave the pot dear.” Initially, I viewed this scene as him being his usual condescending prickish self, especially with her response as she walks away. “Lippy little shit.”

But rewatching it now, Five doesn’t really say this snidely at all. There’s no edge to his words or bite to his tone. And he doesn’t smirk or give the waitress one of his usual shit-eating grins either (like when he tells Diego he’s surprised Reginald waited so long to stab him or when he tells Elliot “Any closer and I’ll melt your brain.”) He even adds a ‘thank you’ at the end. It’s quiet and polite. So much so, I missed it the first time watching (and second… and third… thanks subtitles). 

While the waitress perceives this interaction as Five being a rude child (understandable), I think Five just sometimes forgets that his current physical state is not an accurate representation of his actual age. He doesn’t look like a 58 year old man who could easily get by saying, “Leave the pot dear,” but when you really think about it, that is exactly how a polite 58 year old man would talk to a customer service worker. There are a few times throughout the show where Five speaks or uses a word I’d attribute more to an older man vocabulary (lollygagging, for instance) and I think it’s just a really nice touch to his character.
