I’m a Jiper hater in the sense that I don’t ship it but I’m such a Jiper stan in the sense that I love that it happened, that I think it reveals so much about Jason and Piper’s characters and their world, and that I believe it tells a story of comphet and pleasing the gods and the strength of memory and the way the gods play with humans like they’re dolls. ultimately it’s a love story about friendship and solidarity.

And since we don't face direct punishment for missing positive social cues like we do for negative ones, our coping skills and compensatory hypervigilance don't develop the same way. So we go through a world of never recognising positive signals, sometimes spotting negative signals, and knowing for sure there's more negative signals we're still missing, because those keep blowing up in our face.

Jason suggested they kiss as a way for Nico to get over his internalized homophobia and then “haha jk…unless”ed his way into getting Nico’s tongue in his mouth

I don’t think Jason was even aware of his own crush on Nico until he was actively making out with him. he never would have suggested it if he realized it was something he wanted. no, Jason fully believed he was just being a good bro by offering to kiss Nico as practice or therapy or whatever.

the thing is, Jason doesn’t know he’s allowed to want things, or maybe he’s unaware of the things he wants, because his whole life has been a gift to appease someone else. the only way he’d ever kiss the person he’s crushing on is if he thinks it would benefit the guy.

but once he’s kissing Nico, he’s obviously going to enjoy it and his feelings are going to become way too obvious to repress anymore.

Nico, meanwhile, would be like “yeah sure ok. you’re hot. it’s not like it would be a chore.” and he kisses Jason and finds out he’s right! kissing Jason is great! but of course that’s to be expected, because although Nico thinks he’s wrong for being attracted to boys, he’s fully aware that he likes them, and Jason’s just about the most attractive teenage guy in existence. of course he’s attracted to Jason, so of course kissing him is pleasant. that doesn’t mean he has a crush, though.

that is, until he figures out how into it Jason is.

Nico’s crush on Percy was painful but easy because Percy was never going to like him back. there was no temptation to do anything about his feelings because he knew they weren’t reciprocated and he’d just get turned down.

knowing that another boy likes him is terrifying because now he can’t control or predict what that guy is going to do or say. and even worse, now there’s a real possibility that if Nico starts liking Jason, they’ll end up dating. sure, they’re already kissing, but just kissing seems somehow less sinful to Nico than actually loving and being in a relationship a boy. he’s sinning with his actions, but sinning with his heart is much, much worse.

fortunately, the solution is easy: turn Jason down, stop encouraging him by kissing him, and don’t fall in love with him.

except….

Nico doesn’t want to turn Jason down. Nico doesn’t want to stop kissing him. And Nico doesn’t want to keep himself from falling in love with him.

because Nico’s already at the precipice and ready to jump.

Nico is stubborn and strong willed, but he’s always been weak to love. he figures he’s damned already, so might as well let himself have what he wants.

the only problems left are that he doesn’t want to condemn Jason to damnation, and he doesn’t want anyone to know what they are.

but he wants. he wants so badly, and he can’t help how weak he is to his own feelings. he can’t help that he’s impulsive that lacks self-control, and he definitely can’t help how desperate he is to give and receive affection.

so he can’t help it when the words “I love you” tumble past his lips when he and Jason are alone in his cabin.
