the vibe at the restaurant one of the most exclusive, upscale spots in dallas was pure luxury. your family had booked out the private dining room, a space dripping in dustypink, italian marble, and moody, romantic lighting.
outside, downtown dallas was buzzing, entirely unaware that you and paige were tucked away inside. tonight was special because your girlfriend had just officially been named the wnba rookie of the year, and you wanted her to celebrate it with the people who meant the most to you.
paparazzi were already gathering because they found out your family was in town.
but inside, paige was standing in front of the mirror in the private restroom, smoothing down a fancy designer sweater that looked effortless and hot on her. it perfectly complemented your stunning, black chrome hearts dress.
"deep breaths, bueckers," she muttered to herself, staring at her reflection. "you handle full-court presses. you can handle a dinner."
the door clicked open, and you stepped in, your heels echoing softly on the tile. your heart melted a little at the sight of her. you walked up behind her, wrapping your arms around her waist and resting your chin on her shoulder. "talking to yourself?"
paige immediately turned in your arms, her hands settling on your waist. she flashed that signature dimpled smile of hers—the exact one that makes you completely fall for her all over again every single time you see it.
"i’m literally sweating," she joked, leaning in with a smirk. "nah but for real, i'm sure this will go well. i love you, and your family is special, but i know they're gonna love me too."
you leaned up, pressing a soft kiss to her lips. "i’m sure they’ll adore you, just be my paige "
she took a slow breath, kissing your forehead.
when you guys walked out and opened the heavy doors to the private dining room, the chaotic chatter of your family instantly went dead silent.
kris, your mother. was the first to jump up, looking too good in a sleek black dress. her eyes lit up the second she saw you two walking in hand-in-hand.
"oh, look at you two!" kris smiled, walking over with her arms wide open, she pulled paige straight into a huge hug. "paige, my dear! it is so good to finally meet you. congratulations on rookie of the year! we are so incredibly proud."
paige’s shoulders finally dropped and she let out a relieved laugh, leaning down to hug her back. "thank you so much, it really means a lot that you guys are here"
"are you kidding? we wouldn't miss it," khloé chimed in, coming over to give paige a tight squeeze. she pulled back, looking her up and down. "okay, so you're gorgeous, the fit is immaculate, and you make my sister happy. you're officially cleared. welcome to the family."
kendall raised her champagne glass with a grin. "seriously, paige, crazy season. we’re definitely playing pickup next time you're in la."
"name the time and place," paige smiled, her natural charm completely taking over.
the rest of the dinner was a vibe. as the food came out, any leftover awkwardness completely disappeared. since you guys had been lowkey this whole time, your sisters had a million questions, but paige handled it so well. she was leaning forward, laughing at khloé’s jokes, talking fashion with kendall, and actually listening to kim talk about north’s basketball games. underneath the tablecloth, paige’s hand rested on your thigh, her thumb tracing slow circles against your skin.
toward the end of the night, the staff brought out a custom cake topped with a mini replica of the roty trophy
"okay, we need a photo," kim announced, already standing up and directing everyone.
you and paige stood together in front of the wine wall. paige wrapped her arm around your waist, pulling you close against her side. you looked up at her right as the camera flashed, catching the way she was looking down at you with pure adoration.
an hour later, you guys were in the back of a black suv heading home. the tinted windows felt familiar, but everything felt different now.
your phone buzzed with a text in the family group chat from kris. she dropped the candid photo kim took, the one of paige looking down at you, laughing, completely captivated by you.

you showed the screen to paige. she leaned her head back against the seat, pulling you tight against her chest so you could rest your head in her neck. a soft, happy laugh escaped her lips.
"i survived," paige whispered into your hair, holding you close.
"you're def approved," you whispered back.
