I truly wonder why the rumor thing was brought up in the book honestly. I know it might just be people just gossiping for the sake of it or people getting bored and wanted some entertainment but...

The people on the Vat weren't normal people. These were people who had published academic papers, these were professionals with Ph.ds or maybe Nobel Prize awards to their name.

These people knew that they couldn't simply draw assumptions without any evidences to back it up. These people's jobs were basically to research and observe things closely before making any conclusions. These people wouldn't make any claim without knowing what they were talking about.

For sure they would not say that they notice something weird about Grace and Stratt's relationship just for the sake of having something to gossip about. And the fact that almost all scientists on board thought they have a weird thing going on didn't really help the case. And Grace admittedly saying in the book that he was always at Stratt's side, that they see each other everyday, that he is her little science lapdog, or that their house in Baikonur is literally next to each other, really does not help him beat the allegations surrounding them.

And what was up with DuBois not elaborating why he thinks Grace is somewhat special to Stratt? Like what prompted him to come to that conclusion? Let's talk about that! (I have a theory though what it is but I'm writing a fic about it so maybe I'm going to gatekeep it for now)

The existence of the rumors was proof itself that they have a vibe between them that couldn't be ignored by the people around them. And considering the movie, yep, they certainly have that weird vibe to them.

Yet that picture of a peaceful campus life filled with skittles and rainbows shatters into pieces as a certain woman with strawberry-blonde hair and an infuriating attitude arrives at his university and decides to make his campus life revolve around her like how the Earth always revolves around the Sun.

i think this shots are way deeper than intended.

the way both stratt and grace stops at some point as the tied of people just keeps going, how he stops, he's not looking at her but he is facing her direction

how she stops and waits for him, how she keeps turning back to keep an eye on him and just waits for him to come back to her side

plus

the way he keeps giving looks in her direction as he speaks with yao

the main purpose of this scene is to state grace would never want to be in space for the shock that comes later when stratt has to send him to work best, also is to state that rocky is that someone grace was brave for

but the subtext is so interesting, the way it focus on both grace and stratt in a sea of people, they stop for a second being just them, still apart, but only them. like suggesting that even among the chaos, they are still standing together

OP this was such a nice catch! I have watched all Ryland-Eva scene pack so many times (because I edit them sometimes) and I thought I was also reaching or just being delusional at first, but Grace's eyes do always anchor towards where Stratt is, and that's vice versa, in all the scenes where there were crowds of people around them.

Like that meeting after Grace's "Whoops there it is," line, he was talking to other people around the table but his eyes always darts back to where Stratt is, which is beside him.

Or that time when he remembered the centrifuge thing. When Grace was explaining the fun fact, you could notice that his eyes kept darting towards to where Stratt is positioned in the scene. And he was already staring at HER before he walked towards the conversation he was not even invited to join in. (I wanted to put the pictures of all these scenes I'm talking about but I'm lazy lol sorry)

And Stratt at that spin drive scene when Grace was blowing a glove, her eyes are just watching him from afar.

And in the karaoke scene, her eyes keeps on coming back on him despite looking around, she looks at him most of the time she was singing.

And of course, Grace in that scene was only looking at HER! His eyes are literally locked on HER in that room full of people. He could have just focused on the people singing, but when Yao and Ilyukhina were singing in the scene before Stratt did, he also stared at them, but he looked around at others at the room too, that is why he noticed DuBois and Shapiro flirting. But when it was Stratt singing, she had his full undivided attention. Like WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO THINK?! And he is obviously searching for her in that room before she decided to join in and sing.

And to add to that, the scene when they were about to tell him that he is the back up science officer that is going to be the replacement, you can see at that scene, when they entered the room he was the first to sit down and he was talking. Dmitri (the spin drive guy) went in first, but his eyes only followed Eva, he looked at her when he talked to her!

In the book they seemed to have that habit too, I swear! Like the one I posted about the argon lab scene, he knows that she looks up at him from time to time but how would he know if he doesn't look at her? It's written in first person POV.

Even if they're apart in the sea full of people, they are always going to be looking for the other, they would always rely on the other. And they still do that even light years apart as Eva always looks at the stars for Grace and trusts him to find the solution. And Grace looks at the camera for Stratt and trusts her to find the beetle and save humanity with the solution he found.

Their connection, their entire relationship is sickening.

idk why but that part where grace introduces himself to lokken and she is like "the ryland grace who wrote THAT work" and while grace gets all defensive stratt is like "you are famous 😄", keeps playing on my mind at random moments

Yes, yes Grace we get it! You can't wait to go home and to get to see and talk to Stratt again. Definitely not his first priority once he makes it back to Earth. Nope.

Just a random thought, if Ryland and Eva are a married couple in a rom com, I think their dynamic would be similar to Baek Hyun Woo and Hong Hae In from the kdrama Queen of Tears lol. It's just the vibe is very the same. Like your wife being your boss and all and Hyun Woo being a leaky blob of a human like Grace lol. And Hae In is so Stratt coded.

Now I kinda want to write an au fic about that haha.

Something I just realized about Book Eva during the explosion scene and Movie Ryland during the explosion scene.

In the book, Eva most probably gets thrown to the ground by the explosion. As soon as she recovers, the very first person she calls out to is Grace, asking if he's okay.

Alright, maybe that's just because she knows he's the closest person to her.

But that's not what sticks with me.

What sticks with me is what she does next.

She physically goes to him before reaching for her radio to find out what actually happened.

And I kept asking myself: why?

Grace already answered. He said he was alright.

So why not grab the radio immediately? Why not assess the situation first?

Why did she have to go to him?

Because she needed to make sure he was actually okay.

Because she needed to see with her own eyes that he was still there.

Because maybe, no matter what had just happened, she knew she could deal with it as long as he was still there.

Before anything else, she needed to know that Grace was safe.

I actually can't with Eva.

Then there's the movie.

There's a small movement Sandra Hüller makes that you could interpret as Stratt checking on Ryland for a split second before she runs toward the explosion.

But what really gets me is Ryland.

Stratt takes off running without a second thought. It's dangerous. They don't even know what happened yet, but she runs toward the explosion like her life depends on it.

And Grace follows her.

This is the same man who's defined by his fear. The same man who believes he's a coward. The same man who couldn't willingly sacrifice himself for humanity.

Yet when Eva runs straight toward danger...

...he runs after her.

It's the first time we see him willingly throw himself into a dangerous situation without her forcing him or cornering him into it.

It's his own choice.

His instinct isn't to run away.

His instinct is to follow her.

I am so not normal about these two.

Do you ever think about the fact that Grace's first memory of his own name is it being said by Stratt? He literally did not know who he was until he met her. I'm going to throw up.

Definitely agree! The videos in the 2022 PHM Draft was all addressed to her. There was supposed to be a scene where he named the hard drive containing all the video logs "STRATT" before he included them in the beetles.

The videos was always all for her.

As someone who watched the movie first, and became a strattland shipper because of it, it's so funny how delusional I had become of every Grace and Stratt scenes in the book lol. I read their scenes with a shipper mindset, I'm sorry!

Like when he was examining the Astrophage inside the argon filled lab.

This part, as this was Grace's POV, how does he even know that she's looking up at him sometimes? Unless he catches it, right? Unless he also looks at her from time to time or looking at her from the corner of his eyes. How could he have known that without paying attention to her too? Like he could've been so immersed at his job that he never even noticed Stratt is still there. Yet he does and I think he appreciates it somehow (He even said he gotta admire her patience even though she unapologetically displayed her impatience at first by urging him to do it faster). (Honestly if this was told in 3rd Person POV, I wouldn't be so delusional about that line. But it was First. Person)

And she never left him alone in the lab even everyone else left the observation room. She's there with him the entire time, replying to every single stupid thing he says. And it's just the two of them in the book almost that entire argon lab scene.

And the amounts of "I glared at her, she glared at me, I stared at her, she stared at me, I glanced at her, she glanced at me" in almost all of their book interaction convinces me they kept looking at each other most of the time. (kinda seeing why there were rumors about them in the book lol)

And may I add the sticky note on his forehead??

That was so funny 😆 Like you mean to tell me that this no nonsense woman who has no reservations about dragging eveyone out of their will and conveniences by force, came inside his room and instead of insensitively ruining his rest and waking him up, or sending him a text/email, or calling him later, she instead grabbed a sticky note, wrote her message, handwrote Chinese characters (a long one at that), and stucked it on his face out of all places? Haha she's actually a menace like him.

And also this line, again from Grace's perspective.

He notes things like her righting a strand of her hair that were blown to her face. He's so descriptive about that, it wasn't even necessary to point out lol I can't, I'm so delusional.

I wonder what what was the experience of the people that were the reverse of this, like read the book first and shipped them because of it and then watched the movie. I wonder what level of delusion the movie had sent them to.
