dallas is such a mess right now. whatever jose is trying to do, it’s unsustainable. why do we have bigs taking 3s. why do we have guards guarding post players, and why is like the entire team a defensive liability. does anyone know their role…?? apart from paige and azzi? to be fair though today isn’t looking like azzis best game
to be honest, im not that surprised by azzi’s ranks. I knew azzi fc would put in the effort to get her to a high fan rank, but she’d fall in media and player rankings. I think people keep forgetting that media and players could only vote 4 guards, so I can see why azzi didn’t make the cut for a lot and/or was easily overlooked and forgotten. my real question is how she has a higher media rank than player rank 😭 I was not expecting that considering how much media hates her sometimes. I knew she was gonna fall but not that much ?

betnijah's a solid defensive wing who was a huge part of ny's championship run a couple years ago. she was out last year due to injury but yeah tough to see her being phased out of the rotation at new york. she's on the older side, but i think still a good piece to have and would fill a need for dallas. i don't know if ny would part with her just yet (even if she is mostly on the bench) and i'm not sure if we have anything of interest for ny to offer in return, unless they'd be willing to take second-round draft picks, but worth a try.
good to know !! if she was a valuable asset to nyl in 2024 Im not too sure what dallas could offer to get her. I ended up doing some digging and she does seem like a good and realistic option, thank you for the insight :)

still upset that it took a franchise rookie record in 3pm for jose to realise that azzi deserved to start. she went like 8 games (?) benched when she should’ve been starting for at least 4 of those

yeah it's a little bit of an apples to oranges comparison btwn the two. at the end of the day, one is a pure point guard and the other is a shooting guard (yes, i know azzi can be labelled a "combo" guard but i say this more in context of olivia having primary ball handling duties at minny vs azzi at dallas). olivia's in a system where she's able to dictate what the play will be, whereas that's not necessarily in azzi's control at dallas as not the #1 option.
so it's just hard to really compare the two. i think both are excelling at the roles they've been given by their respective teams. i think if azzi has a really great second half of the season offensively (e.g. get her scoring average to 15+ ppg, with great efficiency) alongside her tremendous defense, then roty will be way tighter than people think it is right now.
i will say though, i do think a lot of people thought minnesota would be a lot worse than they are right now given the turnover their team had in the offseason and of course not having phee in the lineup. like i know some people that even had dallas above minny in their preseason rankings. so, credit where credit is due. i think people underestimated cheryl as a coach but also olivia and natasha have played at all-wnba levels (you could also make a case for courtney williams). but yeah being in cheryl's system certainly helps olivia.
anyway, i just think we need to get to a place where both players' achievements and game can be highlighted without constantly downplaying the other person's. and i say this a long-time olivia hater and big azzi fan lol.

I think it’d be disappointing if they lose to Toronto both times this month. I know they’re both away games but with an undermanned Toronto team (aka no Kiki and Brittney), i’d expect Dallas at the very least to split those games if not win both. They could lose to NY both times but the other one is at home to Dallas and we’ve already beaten them once and that was away, so i’d like to think we can match up well against them and again split those two games this month.
Atlanta’s the only other one we could lose, but it’s at home and i really would like not to be swept by a team in the regular season lol so i think we handle business there.
Obviously strange things can happen as always in sport and nothing’s ever guaranteed but i feel like we should go 8-2 or better this month 🙏

yeah i’m unfortunately keeping my expectations pretty low about azzi being an all-star just because i’m not sure how many media and player votes she’d get (and those both still account for 50% of the vote). as another anon established, offense is king when people vote on these things esp PRA stats before they even start giving defensive stats any love. but as long as Azzi gets all-defensive first-team, maybe dpoy, and makes a strong push for roty (cause all-rookie team is already a lock lol) then that’s what really matters

I mean i think Jose wants Azzi to be the 1b/#2 option after Paige and we’re slowly getting there, albeit it needs to be more consistent. Azzi had a significant amount of shots last game and her average attempts per game went up from 9 in May to almost 13 per game in June, which is around where you want her to be as the #2 option. And she keeps getting rotations as the primary handler. Plus he’s played her a TON of minutes the entire month. Pretty sure she played the entire second, third and fourth quarters last game after her usual rotation off in the first quarter with 2 mins to go. I think it’s just that there’s also a fine line between making sure your players actually get some rest in game. The ideal scenario would be that your starters play like 30-32 mins a game tbh, esp in a long season.
So i think Jose knows he wants things to run through Paige and Azzi, but at the end of the day, he also can’t completely control what his others players end up doing on the court once they’re out there esp if their role players are taking dumb shots they shouldn’t be and there are obvs still times Azzi and Paige pass up a shot when they shouldn’t 😭 But yeah hopefully the trend of Azzi getting more shots continues this month and she’ll likely finally! surpass Arike in attempts per game (Azzi’s on 11.4 and Arike’s on 12.2 currently) 🙏
it’s really good to see azzi take more shots in recent games. despite the increase in minutes, i still feel like jose is underutilising her. the more minutes azzi plays, the more defence jose expects from her. the more defence she offers, the worse her shooting and scoring efficiency gets because she’s worn out. my main problem with the wings is that a lot of players cannot offer defence when and if they have an off-shooting night (eg arike). they lack a lot in that area and it’s definitely not sustainable. hopefully we’ll see an improvement this month though !!
I actually cannot comprehend why the media has such a hard time understanding that a rookie at a 10-34 record team (dallas) is gonna have a very different experience to a rookie who went to a 34-10 record team (lynx). like let’s not act like this is a controlled experiment…
i saw someone say that paige and azzi are building a team while olivia miles just got drafted into one and i feel like that’s the perfect way to describe it. this isn’t to diminish anything OM has done for the lynx, but her rookie experience has been privileged with the team that she got drafted to. i feel like it’s incomparable, the wings are so severely underdeveloped, and the whole team is pretty much a defensive liability apart from 3-4 players

i'm really excited for the rest of the season - dallas have the easiest strength of schedule the rest of the season after a really tough schedule the first two months, so there's a real big opportunity ahead for us to rack up a ton of wins and very little losses, if all goes well. i think there's a good chance we could go 10-0 this july. from my own analysis, i think we go 8-2 at worst, as long as we don't lose any unexpected ones (like the portland one from a few weeks ago), but we'll see!
hoping for a really big month from azzi shooting-wise too! her splits from june were kinda similar (albeit a couple percentage points better) to her january shooting splits from earlier this year, which was arguably her worst shooting month. but then she had an AMAZING february, so if the pattern holds, july should be a very good month for her 😁🤞
super excited for july hoops too !! there’s definitely a chance for wings to go undefeated this month. I predicted that their record could be 6-4 at worst (only losing to tempo and nyl)
I think azzi can really shine this month, im honestly just worried about jose and what he thinks azzis role on the court is. recently, he’s been taking azzi out in the most crucial moments / when she finally is finding her tempo on the court so… overall though im very excited :)

Ah awesome, thanks for sharing! Yeah unfortunately I doubt Azzi will get many, if any, media votes 😔. Similar to us, they have to vote for only 4 backcourt players and while I think if you account for her defense, Azzi arguably deserves a spot, it's hard to overlook a lot of the leading scoring guards esp when you can only vote for 4. Plus don't think many media voters would vote for 2 backcourt players from the same team, they'd probably just opt for the leading scorers on the top teams.
I'm interested to see the tally for the players' votes though, that's always an interesting one 😅
at this point all im asking for is for azzi to be an all star, hope the fan votes carry her cause I have zero faith in her getting any votes from media
with all the defensive stats that she’s shown up in I would’ve at least expected her to be on some media members’ ballot papers but I don’t think I’ve seen her get voted a single time 😭
