Protip: getting your foot in the door

VOLUNTEER!

I'm not shy of volunteering. It's a good way to develop your skills, have fun and give back to your community.

During University, I was desperate to prove I could manage social media and the like, especially as I was making a massive career change. So I volunteered for a major NFP and helped promote one of their events. I had a blast meeting new people, managing social media accounts and learning things about social you don't learn in the classroom. In fact, most of what I've learnt while volunteering or on the job hasn't been because of something I initially learnt at uni.

Recently, I've started volunteering my social media skills to the JYM theatre co. They're doing a production of Merrily We Roll Along and I'm managing copy for the eDM's, Twitter and Instagram feeds. Obviously, there'll be more content once rehearsals begin, but until then, there's a heap of planning and organising to ensure the production is a success.

It may take awhile to secure a perm place in the digital and social sphere, but I'm having fun trying to get there.

Week 11: Global social media practice: case study China

Social media sites are incredibly popular in China, in fact a staggering 95% of internet users in china are registered on a social media site of some kind. I found it interesting that the majority of users tend to use personal computers to access these sites rather than mobile phones, especially since mobile phones are widely used in other countries like America and Australia. I also found it interesting that much of the content users find online comes directly from a social media site and users in China tend to prefer to access their content that way.

While social media is revolutionary for China, based upon the diagrams and charts in the reading by McKinsey, it proves citizens in China have a different approach to how and why they use social media sites.

Many social media sites and content published online are often controlled by the government in China, so they may not be receiving all the content they could or should be. I don’t really understand why a government controlled internet is considered as “leading the way”. I do think it’s interesting that china has their own versions of Facebook and other social media sites, which does make it tailored for that country, but again that does suit the way how users in China use the internet.

Week 10: Social gaming and playing the crowd

I’ve never really seen the point in playing computer games. Sure I’ve dabbled in Lemmings (haha!), Mario Bros and the occasional Draw Something! But I’ve never really sat down and wasted hours trying to reach the level, or wanted to spend money to help me reach that next level. I know people who have though, and hey, if that’s what floats their boat, then so be it, but I still don’t get it.

I’ve had some bad experience with gamers. I lost a boyfriend due to one and I don’t understand how people can get lost in the game for hours. When I look at gamers and see them playing one, I don’t see the achievement or enjoyment with it.

What I do know is what I’ve learned from various readings. I found it interesting that people create avatars in games so they are completely different to their physical attributes in Real Life. I’m assuming they do this because other characters in the game will want to join their inner circle, or whatever it is they call them these days, if the avatar is more attractive. Some users even go as far as to pay for digital attributes for their avatars, which *is* a bit farfetched, but then it is also a good way to ensure that whole avatar creation has their own individuality to it.

Apart from paying to collect certain treasures or avatar pieces, I don’t understand how gamers can completely forget their physical space. You hear rumours of gamers who get so engaged in their game-play they completely forget to look after their Real Life baby, they’d rather feed their online baby.

Sure it’s fun to watch TV shows like Community and the Big Bang Theory make constant gaming references and have specific episodes where they’re all sitting around playing D&D, but most of the time the majority of gaming references go right over my head. And it’s not just because I’m a girl.

I know plenty of female gamers and female game developers. They often tell me they have trouble trying to play in certain gaming communities because the male gamers there are so unwelcoming of women as they believe women don’t belong in that space. Much of the time they often have to go as far as creating male avatars in order to be able to play certain games, which is a bit unfair, but in the end, they’re the ones with the coolest outfits and weapons, whereas the female characters are overly sexualised.

Maybe I’m reading too much into this? I’m not too sure...
