Dylan Dog and an Assortment of Horrors
I discovered Dylan Dog as a kid and still enjoy reading it to this day

One of the most popular comic book heroes in Italy was published 30 years ago in Yugoslavia and immediately grabbed my attention because the main protagonist had a weirder nose than other comic book heroes I was used to. The fact that it was brilliantly written by Tiziano Sclavi was a bonus. Dylan Dog unfortunately never succeeded in US or in UK (although he lives and operates in London) but is still hugely successful in Italy and the Balkans (as successful as a comic book can be in the Balkans). He is a private investigator specialised in cases that involve all kinds of supernatural occurences. It’s also one of the few comic books published by Sergio Bonelli Editore that was enjoyed by girls. And understandably so since Dylan’s visual appeareance was based on an actor, Rupert Everett. Sclavi was inspired by Everett’s performance in a film called “Another Country”. Later, when Michele Soavi, an italian director made a movie “Delllamorte, Dellamore” (”Cemetary Man”), based on Sclavi’s book, which was heavily influenced by Dylan Dog it only made sense to have Rupert Everett in a lead role so the whole thing came full circle. But it’s not only Everett’s dashing looks that attract women to read Dylan Dog. It’s also his romantic nature and emotional vulnerability which are an essential ingredient in every Dylan episode as are supernatural monsters.
If you’re interested there is a very good and thick collection of the earliest episodes here and one recent, critically acclaimed episode here, both in english.
I would strongly urge you not to watch that horrible US attempt at a Dylan Dog movie adaptation called “Dead of Night” since it does not capture not the least bit what Dylan Dog comic books are about.
Despite what you may think we’re still here!!! Elric the malnutritioned!!!

GAMERA
Heard somewhere that The Revenge of Iris was supposed to have an after credits scene where there was nothing left on earth except gamera still fighting swarms of Gyaos.

Still haven’t gotten around to coloring new Gameras, but this repost will do :D because Gamera...
Gamera vs. Viras. Gotta admit, Viras is one of the best designed japanese monsters, in my opinion, although the competition is very tough.
