If the bald area is not very large, the procedure might finish in just one session. On the contrary, if the bald area is too large and also the donor area is scarce, the number of sessions might go up to 3 as well.

The total number of sessions required for the hair transplant surgery depends on the patient’s hair type. If the hair is dense, and hair strands are thick and strong, one session can be enough, however, if the hair strands are weak, thin and sparse the sessions might increase. Restoring hair on your head by the body hair transplant

Hair transplant from the body to the head/scalp is the newest technique used for hair transplant surgeries if the patients have less hair in the donor area. Body hair transplant is considered when patients lack scalp donor hair and thus body hair is used as a substitute for it.

For the body transplant to the head/scalp, hair is harvested from different areas of the body, like the patient’s chest, beard, and underarms. Generally, for a transplant on the head, a good graft can be harvested from the sides of the scalp or the back of the head. However, when hair is scarce in these donor areas, beard hair can be used followed by the patient’s chest hair. Beard is usually a preferred choice as the beard hair is thick in diameter and grows longer length-wise. Beard hair transplants usually have a success rate of 80 to 85%. It is found that beard and chest hair is closest to scalp hair if we compare both. Thus, these are more commonly used donor areas other than the scalp. Normally, a body hair transplant is considered for patients when their level of baldness is of a grade 6 or 7.

Body hair transplant to scalp/head is done using a technique called Follicular Unit Extraction. On the whole, around 500 to 4000 grafts are transplanted in one to two days, which is divided into 2 blocks- graft extraction and placing the grafts on the desired areas. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia. Small and straight punches of size 0.7mm-1mm are made all over the donor area, this helps in better extraction of complete undamaged grafts. The wounds take 4-5 days to heal without leaving any visible scars on the donor areas. Until then, it is essential to keep the donor area covered and apply the ointment provided for better healing.

The extracted grafts from the donor area, containing one to two hairs, are then planted on the intended area on the scalp. In some cases, the grafts might require further refining to remove extra fat or skin before they are transplanted.  The transplanted hair on the scalp will usually start falling out by two weeks, and then begin to regrow. And they grow similar to the scalp hair about four months post-treatment, and then continue to grow subsequently.
