One of the most challenging yet satisfying parts of putting on shows at Studio & is selecting artists for our group and themed shows. Our talent pool is large and varied, and to work toward a selected theme or be given a particular artistic task can be difficult for artists and curators alike. But we have found time and again that the artists of Durango have stepped up to each challenge and have continually surprised us all with their creativity and execution.
SO FAR: RECONSTRUCTING 40 Years should prove to be no different. Five artists, all high school graduates in 1994, and all turning 40 this year, present a look at their collective progress from children of the eighties to working Durango artists in 2016. The show will feature sculpture, vector graphics, literature, video, collage and photo.

Snowdown brings out our best
Much of what we remember of that glorious decade that brought us Flock of Seagulls, Mister Mister, and ALF we might like to forget. But at a party a few days ago, to kick off our week of Snowdown celebrating, when a blonde guy with his gelled hair and polo shirt collar sticking up above a pastel turquoise sweater vest offered me a friendship bracelet from his neon pink fanny pack, I knew all was well in Durango with this week’s look back to the 80′s. A pink bow prom dress,a Harlem Globetrotter wearing her zipper pocket ‘Roo sneakers, a California Raisin. And this is only the beginning. Those of us in Durango this week should consider ourselves lucky to be in a place that allows itself, if only for a few days, to not take itself so seriously. To get creative, to pull out all the stops. We all there’s plenty of time for being serious, and plenty to be serious about, but this week, let’s let out our A-Team, let’s wear those shorty short O.P.’s like Magnum P.I., and be sure to give ALF a high five when you see him on the street.
STUDIO & was born in March of 2010, and next week, we celebrate five years of creating, exhibiting, promoting, and engaging ART. Much of it seems like a dream -- the kind where interesting surprises wait around every corner and you wake up feeling part confused, part giddy, and hope to pick up right where you left off next time you fall asleep.
One day at STUDIO &, you walk past plaster mountains. Another day, you watch a woman with pink paint running down her thigh as she throws blue eggs at the wall. You bring an item to a shrine honoring death, and a skeleton puppet, nine feet tall, dances for you. You have your photo taken with Andre Agassi. You ride a flying bicycle. The American flag flies upside down, and Teddy Roosevelt wears a ski mask. On a warm summer evening, a gorilla leads you outside the gallery, hangs an armadillo pinata from a tree and beats it with a stick until limes, garlic, and radishes spill out.
Let's not wake up from this one; join us in the dream. And if you are one of the many who have joined us already, it is your artistic, financial, spiritual, and psychic support that has made our first five years possible. We offer you our utmost gratitude, and look forward to keepin' it weird with you for a long time to come.

If you didn't get to experience it last year, think of an American holiday bazaar crossed with a Turkish bazaar. We have invited 22 artists from around the region to cram into Studio & hawk their wares for 3 days. The idea is to help put unique and handmade artwork in one place so you can give the gift of local art to those on your list this year. You will get to meet the artist that you are buying the work from. This weekend is one of our favorite events, and we've got a few tricks up our sleeve for this year's bazaar. We've enjoyed having him in our window (he's brought in the most unusual faces), and we are excited to see what kind of friendly bidding war may take place today as we near 5pm and the close of the silent auction. All proceeds go to arts education programs at the Durango Arts Center!
Scott Dye and Hailey King are leaving Durango for Portland, OR. We're so sad to lose two of our favorite people, two extremely talented artists and Studio &'s very own pop-artist, photographer and illustrator. And... we're thrilled for them and the adventures waiting for them in the Northwest.
